Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Was Erased

The voice came from the darkness.
"Matteo..."
Every muscle in Matteo Valenti’s body froze.
He knew that voice.
Not because he had heard it recently.
Because he had spent twelve years trying to forget it.
The voice of a woman he buried.
The voice of a woman he cried over.
The voice of his mother.
Lucia Valenti.
The lights flickered back on.
And she was standing there.
Alive.
Again.
For the second time in one night, Matteo saw someone return from the dead.
But this time...
he was not shocked.
He was angry.
"Stop."
His voice was cold.
Lucia looked at him.
A mother looking at a son who no longer knew whether to hug her or hate her.
"Matteo..."
"Don't say my name."
The room became silent.
Luca looked between them.
He had seen Matteo angry before.
But not like this.
This was not the anger of a mafia boss.
This was the anger of a child who had spent years believing he had been abandoned.
"You watched me bury you."
Lucia lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"You watched me believe I had no family left."
"I know."
"You let me hate my father."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know."
Matteo laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"Then you know why I can't forgive you."
Lucia accepted those words.
Because she knew she deserved them.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"But you did."
The answer came immediately.
And that hurt more than anything.
Lucia stepped closer.
"I wanted to protect you."
Matteo looked at her.
"Everyone says that."
His eyes moved toward Luca.
"Everyone hides behind that excuse."
A pause.
"My father."
"Elena."
"Marco."
"And now you."
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right.
Everyone had protected him by lying to him.
And every lie had destroyed another part of his life.
Lucia looked at the file in his hand.
"You found it."
Matteo held it up.
"The truth?"
She nodded.
"The truth."
He opened the document.
"The original founder of the Valenti empire was a woman."
Lucia looked at Luca.
Then back at Matteo.
"Her name was Isabella Valenti."
Matteo frowned.
"That name doesn't exist."
"Exactly."
Lucia walked toward the desk.
"Because your grandfather erased her."
Matteo stared.
"Why?"
Lucia touched one of the old photographs.
"Because Isabella created the empire with a different vision."
"What vision?"
"Protection."
A pause.
"Not control."
Matteo looked confused.
Lucia continued.
"She believed the Valenti name should protect people who had no power."
Luca nodded.
"But your grandfather changed everything."
"He turned it into something else."
Lucia looked at Matteo.
"An empire built on fear."
Matteo looked at the documents.
Everything he knew about his family was changing.
The Valenti name.
The organization.
The people.
All of it.
"Why was this hidden?"
Lucia answered quietly.
"Because the truth threatened the people who benefited from the empire."
"And Marco?"
Lucia's expression changed.
"Marco was trying to restore what was stolen."
Matteo looked surprised.
"Then why did everyone think he betrayed us?"
"Because he allowed them to."
"Why?"
"Because someone needed to take the blame."
A pause.
"And Marco was willing to become the villain if it meant keeping you alive."
Matteo looked away.
Too many truths.
Too many reversals.
He hated not knowing.
He hated that everyone had known more than him.
Then Luca spoke.
"There is still one person missing."
Matteo looked at him.
"Who?"
Luca walked toward the window.
"The person who started all of this."
The room became quiet.
Matteo already knew.
But he wanted to hear it.
"Who?"
Luca turned.
"Your grandfather's second son."
Matteo froze.
"My uncle?"
Luca nodded.
"The man everyone believed disappeared."
The same uncle who held one of the keys.
The same uncle whose name had been missing from every conversation.
The same person who had vanished from the family history.
"Where is he?"
Lucia looked at Matteo.
"He never left."
The answer made the room colder.
"What does that mean?"
Lucia looked toward the mansion.
"He has been here."
Matteo stared.
"Here?"
"In this family."
A pause.
"Inside your organization."
Matteo felt something click.
A pattern.
A shadow moving through every secret.
Someone who had been close.
Someone who had never needed to hide.
Because nobody suspected him.
Then Matteo's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone became silent.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice.
"Matteo."
Marco.
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
"Where are you?"
"Trying to save you."
Matteo almost laughed.
"Everyone says that."
Marco was silent.
Then:
"You found Luca."
It was not a question.
Matteo looked at Luca.
"How do you know?"
"Because I was the one who sent him."
The room froze.
Matteo tightened his grip on the phone.
"You sent him?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
A pause.
"Because I knew I couldn't protect both of you anymore."
Matteo looked around.
"Both of us?"
Marco's voice became quieter.
"Matteo..."
"Your uncle knows everything."
The room went silent.
"Who is my uncle?"
Marco did not answer immediately.
And that silence told Matteo everything.
"Say it."
Marco finally spoke.
"The man who raised you."
Matteo stopped breathing.
No.
Impossible.
His uncle.
The man who disappeared.
The man who everyone blamed.
Could not be.
Then Marco said:
"Your uncle was never gone."
A pause.
"He has been standing beside you since the day your father died."
Matteo's mind raced.
Someone beside him.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had guided every decision.
Someone who had access to everything.
Then Marco whispered:
"Look behind you."
Matteo slowly turned.
Everyone followed his eyes.
The bedroom door was open.
Nobody had touched it.
But someone was standing there.
A man.
Older.
Calm.
Holding an old family photograph.
Matteo stared.
Because he knew that face.
He had seen it his entire life.
The man smiled.
And said:
"Hello, nephew."
Matteo lowered the phone.
May you like
Because the man standing in the doorway was the one person he never thought to suspect.
His own uncle.
