Chapter 3 - The Letter From The Dead

The envelope was waiting on the desk.
Not hidden.
Not locked away.
Not protected.
Just sitting there.
Like someone wanted Matteo Valenti to find it.
The room remained completely silent as Matteo stared at the old paper.
His father’s seal was pressed into the wax.
A symbol Matteo had seen thousands of times as a child.
The Valenti family crest.
A symbol that represented power.
Loyalty.
Legacy.
And a past Matteo thought he already understood.
But now it was sitting in front of him.
Eight years after his father’s death.
Impossible.
"Nobody touches it."
Matteo’s voice was low.
The guards immediately stopped moving.
Even Marco Bellini, standing at the end of the hallway, watched carefully.
Matteo reached toward the envelope.
His fingers touched the old paper.
And for a brief moment, he remembered being a child.
His father sitting behind the same desk.
The smell of expensive leather.
The sound of papers being signed.
The calm voice that always told him:
"Power is not about making people fear you, Matteo. Power is knowing who to trust."
Back then, Matteo believed his father knew everything.
Now he wondered if his father had known he was going to die.
He broke the seal.
Inside was one piece of paper.
Only one.
Five sentences.
Matteo read them slowly.
My son,
If you are reading this, then the person I feared most has finally forced you to open the west room.
Do not trust the person who stands beside you.
The truth about my death is inside the place where you were never allowed to look.
Protect Elena and her daughter.
You were always my greatest mistake and my greatest hope.
Matteo stopped.
His expression changed.
Not because of the message.
Because of one sentence.
Do not trust the person who stands beside you.
Everyone in the hallway was beside him.
His guards.
Elena.
Sophie.
Marco.
But only one person had been beside his father for decades.
Marco Bellini.
Slowly, Matteo looked up.
Marco was still there.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost amused.
"You knew about this."
It was not a question.
Marco smiled slightly.
"I knew your father was paranoid."
Matteo folded the letter.
"You knew he left something behind."
Marco did not answer.
That was enough.
The silence was an answer.
Elena stepped forward.
"Mr. Valenti, please."
Matteo looked at her.
"You knew my father wrote this?"
"No."
Her voice shook.
"I only knew he was afraid."
"Afraid of who?"
Elena looked toward Marco.
She did not need to say the name.
Matteo understood.
The entire mansion had been built on secrets.
And everyone had been protecting one.
Except him.
The person who inherited everything.
The person who was supposed to be in control.
A small hand grabbed his.
Sophie.
"Mr. Matteo."
He looked down.
The little girl was staring at the letter.
"Is my mommy safe now?"
The question was simple.
But it hit harder than any accusation.
Because Matteo suddenly realized something.
For years, he had protected his empire.
His money.
His reputation.
His territory.
But a five-year-old child had been standing inside his home, waiting for someone to protect her mother.
And nobody came.
Until now.
"Yes."
Matteo crouched down.
"She is safe."
Sophie looked at him carefully.
"Promise?"
Matteo hesitated.
He was not a man who made promises.
Promises were weaknesses in his world.
But looking at her...
he made one.
"I promise."
Sophie nodded.
Then she whispered:
"My mommy told me something else."
Matteo became still.
"What?"
The girl looked around.
Making sure nobody else heard.
"She said your father left something for you."
Matteo glanced at Elena.
Elena looked confused.
"What something?"
Sophie pointed at the desk.
"She said it was behind the picture."
Everyone turned.
The old portrait hanging above the desk.
Matteo walked toward it.
Slowly.
The painting showed his father standing in the mansion courtyard.
A portrait painted years before Matteo took control.
He removed the frame.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
His heart tightened.
His father had built secrets into the walls.
Matteo opened it.
Inside was a small black notebook.
No name.
No symbol.
No explanation.
Only one word written on the cover.
VALENTI.
He opened the first page.
The handwriting was his father’s.
But what he read made his blood run cold.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And at the top of the page...
one name circled in red ink.
Marco Bellini.
The room changed instantly.
The man who had spent his life advising the Valenti family.
The man who had helped Matteo after his father’s death.
The man who claimed loyalty.
Was inside his father’s secret records.
Marco noticed the notebook.
For the first time that night...
he looked afraid.
Only briefly.
But Matteo saw it.
"You should leave."
Matteo’s voice was quiet.
Marco looked at him.
"Are you threatening me?"
"No."
Matteo closed the notebook.
"I am giving you a chance."
Marco laughed softly.
A cold sound.
"You really think your father was protecting you?"
Matteo stared.
"What does that mean?"
Marco stepped closer.
"Your father spent years searching for the truth."
A pause.
"And the truth almost destroyed him."
The guards moved.
Matteo lifted his hand.
Again.
Nobody moved.
Marco continued.
"He trusted the wrong person."
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
"You."
Marco smiled.
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Too confidently.
And that bothered Matteo.
"Then who?"
Marco looked at Elena.
Then Sophie.
Then back at Matteo.
"Ask yourself why your father never told you about her."
Matteo looked at Elena.
"What is he talking about?"
Elena’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"I..."
She stopped.
Matteo stepped closer.
"Elena."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I wanted to tell you."
"Tell me what?"
She looked at Sophie.
The little girl lowered her head.
"My daughter..."
Elena swallowed.
"She was not the only thing I was hiding."
Nobody spoke.
Matteo felt the ground shift beneath him.
"What else?"
Elena reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small photograph.
Old.
Folded.
Damaged.
She handed it to him.
Matteo looked down.
The picture showed his father.
Standing beside Elena.
But that was impossible.
The photo was dated fifteen years earlier.
Before Elena ever worked at the mansion.
Before Matteo knew her.
And beside his father...
was a young woman Matteo had never seen before.
A woman holding a baby.
Matteo looked closer.
The baby wore a small silver bracelet.
A bracelet he recognized.
Because his mother had kept the matching one hidden in her jewelry box.
His breathing stopped.
"Who is this?"
Elena whispered:
"Your father’s secret."
Matteo stared at the photograph.
The woman.
The baby.
The bracelet.
Everything he thought he knew about his family began falling apart.
Then suddenly...
the mansion alarm started ringing.
A guard rushed into the hallway.
"Boss!"
Matteo turned.
"What happened?"
The guard looked terrified.
"The security system detected someone inside the underground vault."
Matteo’s expression hardened.
"The vault?"
The guard nodded.
"The old one."
The vault nobody had opened since his father died.
The vault only his father knew existed.
Matteo looked at the notebook.
Then the photograph.
Then the locked west room behind him.
Three secrets.
One night.
And someone was still moving inside his mansion.
The guard swallowed.
"Sir..."
Matteo looked at him.
"What?"
The guard lowered his voice.
"The person inside the vault just activated your father’s emergency code."
Matteo froze.
Because only one person should have known that code.
And that person had been dead for eight years.
May you like
Then the vault door camera turned on.
And the screen showed a face Matteo never expected to see.
