Chapter 10 - The Uncle Behind The Empire

The man in the doorway smiled.
"Hello, nephew."
Matteo Valenti stared at him.
For years, he had seen this face in old family photographs.
A man who disappeared from every conversation.
A man whose name was spoken only in whispers.
A man everyone believed had abandoned the Valenti family.
His uncle.
Alessandro Valenti.
The missing brother of Matteo’s father.
The man who was supposed to have vanished twelve years ago.
Matteo slowly lowered his weapon.
Not because he trusted him.
Because he needed answers.
"You're alive."
Alessandro smiled faintly.
"So is your mother."
The words were almost insulting.
Because they were true.
Everyone who disappeared from Matteo’s life seemed to return when he least expected it.
Everyone except the person who could explain why.
"Why?"
The question came quietly.
Alessandro looked at him.
"Why did everyone lie?"
A long pause.
Then Alessandro stepped inside.
"Because your father asked us to."
Matteo’s eyes hardened.
"Don't."
His voice became colder.
"Do not use my father as an excuse."
Alessandro nodded.
"I knew you would say that."
"Because you know me?"
"No."
A pause.
"Because I knew your father."
Those words made Matteo angry.
Everyone knew his father.
Everyone protected his father’s choices.
Everyone understood him.
Except Matteo.
The son who was left behind.
"You all decided my life for me."
Alessandro looked at him.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised Matteo.
No excuses.
No lies.
Just an admission.
"Why?"
Alessandro walked toward the desk.
"Because you were the only person your grandfather could not control."
Matteo frowned.
"My grandfather?"
Alessandro nodded.
"The real war in this family never started with Marco."
The room became silent.
"It started with your grandfather."
Luca stepped forward.
"Tell him everything."
Alessandro looked at Luca.
A complicated emotion crossed his face.
Pride.
Regret.
Pain.
"You should not have been involved."
Luca smiled sadly.
"I was born involved."
Matteo looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
Alessandro sighed.
Then he pointed at the documents.
"Your family built an empire."
A pause.
"But your grandfather built a prison."
Matteo said nothing.
"Anyone who tried to change it disappeared."
"Isabella."
"Your father."
"Your mother."
"Me."
The names fell one after another.
Matteo stared.
"So you were hiding?"
Alessandro nodded.
"I was running."
"From who?"
Alessandro looked directly at him.
"From the person who now controls the Valenti organization."
Matteo already knew.
But he needed to hear it.
"Who?"
Alessandro’s answer was quiet.
"Your grandfather's chosen successor."
A pause.
"Marco Bellini."
Matteo froze.
"But Marco was helping us."
"Yes."
"Then why?"
"Because Marco was never trying to take the empire."
Alessandro looked at the files.
"He was trying to destroy the part of it that was poisoned."
Matteo looked confused.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Alessandro laughed softly.
"Because your father knew you."
A pause.
"You would have gone after Marco."
Matteo did not deny it.
Because he would have.
Alessandro continued.
"And if you attacked Marco, you would have exposed yourself."
"To who?"
Alessandro looked toward the window.
"To the person who has been watching you since childhood."
The room became colder.
Matteo stepped closer.
"Who?"
Alessandro did not answer immediately.
Then he reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
Not old like the others.
Older.
The paper was yellow.
The edges damaged.
Matteo recognized the handwriting.
His grandfather’s.
"Where did you get that?"
Alessandro placed it on the table.
"Your father stole it."
Matteo opened it.
Inside was a single page.
A confession.
Written by his grandfather.
The first sentence made Matteo stop.
I created the Valenti empire by destroying the woman who built it.
His eyes moved faster.
Isabella Valenti was not my wife.
She was my sister.
Matteo froze.
His grandfather had erased his own sister.
The woman who created everything.
The woman whose legacy had been stolen.
The letter continued.
She believed power should protect people.
I believed power should control them.
The family split.
The empire became mine.
And anyone who tried to reveal the truth became my enemy.
Matteo looked up.
"My grandfather killed his own family."
Alessandro nodded.
"Not directly."
A pause.
"He was smarter than that."
"He made others do it."
The room became quiet.
Then Matteo noticed something.
A name at the bottom.
A signature.
But not his grandfather’s.
Someone else had signed as a witness.
Matteo moved closer.
His face changed.
Because the name was familiar.
A name he had heard his entire life.
A name connected to loyalty.
A name connected to trust.
The witness was:
Marco Bellini.
Matteo looked at Alessandro.
"Marco knew."
"Yes."
"All this time."
"Yes."
Matteo closed his eyes.
Too many truths.
Too many secrets.
Then Sophie walked closer.
She looked at the letter.
"Mr. Matteo."
He looked down.
"What?"
She pointed at the paper.
"My mommy told me there was one more thing."
Matteo crouched.
"What thing?"
Sophie reached into her rabbit again.
This time she pulled out a tiny folded paper.
Everyone stared.
How many secrets could one small toy hide?
Matteo opened it.
Three words were written inside.
THE FINAL HEIR.
His heart tightened.
Below the words was a symbol.
Not Valenti.
Not Bellini.
A symbol he had never seen before.
A circle.
Broken in half.
With a single letter in the middle.
L.
Lucia.
His mother.
Or...
someone else.
Before Matteo could understand, every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.
The same darkness.
The same silence.
Then every phone in the room began ringing.
One after another.
The first.
The second.
The third.
Until every device was screaming.
Alessandro’s expression changed.
For the first time...
he looked terrified.
"No."
Matteo turned.
"What?"
Alessandro stared toward the hallway.
"He found us."
The mansion doors slammed shut.
The security system activated.
And from every speaker inside the house came a voice Matteo had never heard before.
A calm voice.
A familiar voice.
A voice that sounded exactly like his father.
"Matteo..."
A pause.
"Forgive me."
The speakers went silent.
Then the front doors opened.
May you like
And standing outside was the one person who should have been impossible to see.
Matteo’s father.
