Chapter 5 - The Daughter Nobody Knew About

The vault door was closing.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Like someone wanted Matteo Valenti to understand one thing.
He was trapped.
Matteo reached forward and grabbed the edge of the steel door before it completely shut.
The metal was heavy.
Too heavy for one person.
But he forced it open enough for his guards to move.
"Push."
The two guards immediately helped him.
The door stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Matteo looked back inside the vault.
The room was empty.
His mother was gone.
The file was gone.
Only one thing remained.
The message written on the wall.
YOU WERE NEVER THE HEIR.
Matteo stared at those words.
Not because they hurt.
Because they confirmed something.
Someone had been preparing for this night.
Someone had known exactly where he would go.
Exactly what he would find.
Exactly how he would react.
And that meant the person behind everything was not watching from outside.
They were close.
Very close.
"Lock down the mansion."
Matteo’s voice echoed through the underground chamber.
One guard immediately reached for his radio.
"No one leaves. No one enters."
Then Matteo stopped.
"Where is Sophie?"
The guard looked confused.
"She was with Elena upstairs."
Matteo turned.
The fear in his eyes appeared for the first time.
"Go."
The guards moved instantly.
Because everyone in the Valenti organization knew one rule.
Nothing mattered more than Matteo’s family.
Even if he refused to admit he had one.
When Matteo returned to the west hallway, Elena was standing near the old room.
But Sophie was gone.
The color disappeared from Elena’s face.
"She was here."
Matteo walked faster.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"When did you last see her?"
Elena looked terrified.
"Only a few minutes ago."
Matteo scanned the hallway.
The guards.
The doors.
The cameras.
Everything.
Nothing.
A child could not disappear from his mansion without someone helping her.
"Show me the security footage."
The guards rushed to the control room.
Minutes later, the screen showed Sophie sitting outside the west room.
Holding her rabbit.
Waiting.
Then the lights went out.
Only for eight seconds.
When they came back...
Sophie was gone.
No footsteps.
No open doors.
No movement.
Nothing.
Matteo watched the footage again.
Then again.
Something was wrong.
"Stop."
The guard froze.
Matteo pointed at the screen.
"Zoom in."
The image became larger.
The hallway camera.
The corner near the old portrait.
There.
A shadow.
Someone standing behind the camera’s blind spot.
Someone who had been waiting before the lights went out.
Matteo’s expression changed.
"Who knows this blind spot?"
Nobody answered.
Then Elena whispered:
"Only people who built the security system."
Matteo looked at her.
"Who built it?"
Elena lowered her eyes.
"Your father."
A pause.
"And Marco Bellini."
The name returned.
Again.
Always the same name.
Marco.
Matteo turned around.
"Find him."
The guards hesitated.
"Boss..."
"What?"
"He is gone."
Matteo stopped.
"Gone?"
"The cameras show he left the mansion ten minutes ago."
Matteo stared.
That was impossible.
Marco had left exactly when everything started happening.
Almost like he knew.
Almost like he planned it.
Then Matteo’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone went silent.
He answered.
No one spoke at first.
Only breathing.
Then a familiar voice.
"Matteo."
His body became still.
Because he knew the voice.
"Sophie?"
A small voice answered.
"Mr. Matteo..."
Matteo closed his eyes briefly.
Relief.
Then anger.
"Where are you?"
Silence.
Then another voice.
A man.
Calm.
Older.
"You always were too emotional when it came to children."
Matteo’s grip tightened.
"Who are you?"
A quiet laugh.
"You know who I am."
Matteo looked around the hallway.
Every guard watched him.
Every person waited.
Then the voice said:
"Your father made the same mistake."
Matteo’s expression hardened.
"What mistake?"
"Trusting people."
The call remained silent.
Then the man continued.
"Bring Elena."
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because she knows where the last piece is."
"What piece?"
A pause.
"The truth your father died protecting."
The call ended.
Matteo stared at the phone.
Elena looked at him.
"What did he say?"
Matteo did not answer immediately.
Because he was thinking.
The voice.
The confidence.
The way the man spoke.
Not like an enemy.
Like someone who believed he had already won.
"Pack a car."
Elena looked confused.
"Where are we going?"
"To get Sophie back."
Twenty minutes later, Matteo sat inside his black armored vehicle.
Elena sat across from him.
Neither spoke.
The mansion disappeared behind them as they drove into the night.
For the first time in years, Matteo left without knowing the destination.
That alone made him uncomfortable.
He hated uncertainty.
But tonight was built from uncertainty.
His mother was alive.
His father had hidden secrets.
Marco had disappeared.
And a little girl was being used as a weapon against him.
Elena looked out the window.
"I am sorry."
Matteo looked at her.
"For what?"
"For bringing this into your life."
He almost laughed.
"My life was already full of this."
She shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became quiet.
"You don't understand."
Matteo watched her carefully.
"What don't I understand?"
Elena looked at him.
"Sophie is not just my daughter."
The car became silent.
Matteo felt something cold move through him.
"What does that mean?"
Elena looked down at her hands.
"I never wanted anyone to know."
"Know what?"
She took a deep breath.
Then whispered:
"Sophie is the reason your father disappeared from the public world before his death."
Matteo stared.
"What?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"Your father found out someone was trying to kill a child."
Matteo felt his chest tighten.
"A child?"
Elena nodded.
"Your father's blood."
The words hit harder than anything else that night.
Matteo looked at her.
"No."
Elena said nothing.
"You are saying..."
His voice became quieter.
"Sophie is..."
Elena looked at him.
"Your sister."
The car stopped.
Not because the driver was told.
Because the driver heard.
Everyone heard.
Matteo sat completely still.
The little girl who had been standing outside his locked door.
The child he thought was only a maid’s daughter.
The child he promised to protect.
Was part of his family.
His father’s secret.
His mother’s hidden truth.
His entire life had been built around a missing piece.
And that piece had been a five-year-old girl.
"Why didn't my father tell me?"
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
"Because he was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of you."
Matteo looked shocked.
"Me?"
Elena nodded.
"He knew you were becoming like him."
A pause.
"Powerful."
Another pause.
"Ruthless."
Matteo looked away.
"He thought if you knew Sophie existed, you would destroy anyone who came near her."
The words stayed in the air.
Because they were true.
Matteo would.
He already knew that.
The car continued moving.
Then the driver spoke.
"Boss."
Matteo looked forward.
"What?"
"We arrived."
The vehicle stopped in front of an abandoned building.
Old.
Empty.
Forgotten.
The kind of place nobody would ever search.
Matteo stepped outside.
Elena followed.
A single light burned inside the building.
Someone was waiting.
Matteo entered slowly.
"Sophie?"
A small voice answered.
"Mr. Matteo..."
He moved toward the sound.
Then stopped.
Because Sophie was not alone.
A man stood behind her.
Holding an old photograph.
The man smiled.
"Hello, Matteo."
Matteo stared.
Because the man holding his sister was the one person he thought had died with his father.
His father's closest friend.
The only man who knew every secret of the Valenti family.
And the man whispered:
"Your father never told you the truth about me."
A pause.
"I was the one who saved your mother."
May you like
The man stepped into the light.
And Matteo finally saw the face of the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
