Chapter 6 - The Man Who Knew The Truth

Matteo Valenti did not move.

Not because he was afraid.

Because for the first time in his life, he did not know what to believe.

The man standing in front of him was supposed to be dead.

Everyone knew his name.

Everyone knew his story.

Adrian Morello.

His father’s closest friend.

His father’s most trusted ally.

The man who disappeared the same night Matteo’s father died.

The official story was simple.

Adrian had betrayed the Valenti family.

He had been killed during a failed escape.

Another name added to the long list of people who disappeared around the Valenti empire.

But now he was standing in front of Matteo.

Alive.

Calm.

Holding Sophie’s hand.

"You."

Matteo’s voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

Adrian looked at him.

"I know what you are thinking."

Matteo stepped forward.

"You are supposed to be dead."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

No explanation.

No excuse.

Just yes.

That answer made Matteo angrier.

"You let me believe that for years."

"I had no choice."

Matteo laughed coldly.

"Everyone says that."

His eyes moved to Sophie.

The little girl was standing beside Adrian.

She looked scared.

But she was not afraid of him.

That bothered Matteo.

Because children always sensed danger.

And Sophie trusted this man.

"Move away from her."

Adrian looked at Sophie.

Then back at Matteo.

"If I wanted to hurt her, you would never have found her."

The room became silent.

Matteo’s guards moved their hands toward their weapons.

Adrian noticed.

But he did not react.

"You are exactly like your father."

Matteo’s expression changed.

"Do not compare me to him."

"Why?"

Adrian tilted his head.

"Because you think he abandoned you?"

That sentence hit something deep.

Something Matteo had spent years ignoring.

"My father lied to me."

Adrian looked at him.

"Your father saved you."

"He hid my mother."

"Because someone was hunting her."

"He hid my sister."

"Because someone wanted her dead."

Matteo stepped closer.

"And you expect me to believe you?"

Adrian was quiet.

Then he reached into his coat.

Every guard immediately aimed their weapons.

Matteo raised his hand.

Wait.

Adrian slowly pulled out a small metal box.

Old.

Scratched.

Familiar.

Matteo recognized it.

Because he had seen it before.

In his father’s office.

A box his father always carried.

A box Matteo was never allowed to touch.

Adrian placed it on the table.

"Your father gave me this the night before he died."

Matteo stared.

"Why?"

"Because he knew he would not survive."

The words landed heavily.

Matteo opened the box.

Inside was a key.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed his father.

His mother.

Adrian.

And a baby.

Sophie.

But something else was written on the back.

A date.

The same date his father died.

Matteo looked at Adrian.

"Why would my father give this to you?"

Adrian looked down.

"Because I was the only person he trusted."

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

"Until Marco found out."

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

"Marco."

Again.

That name.

Always appearing.

Always connected.

"What happened that night?"

Adrian took a breath.

"The night your father died, he was not meeting business partners."

Matteo froze.

"What?"

"He was meeting someone who wanted to expose the person who had been stealing from the Valenti organization for years."

"Who?"

Adrian looked at him.

"You already know."

Matteo said nothing.

Because he did.

Marco.

But something still did not fit.

"If Marco was the enemy, why did he stay beside me?"

Adrian answered immediately.

"Because he needed you."

"For what?"

"Control."

The word echoed.

Adrian continued.

"Your father built an empire. But after he died, someone needed to inherit it."

Matteo stared.

"You."

Adrian nodded.

"Marco could not take the empire directly. The family would never accept him."

"So he used me."

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Matteo looked away.

Every decision.

Every move.

Every person who had advised him after his father’s death.

Was it all planned?

Then Sophie stepped forward.

"Mr. Matteo."

He looked down.

She held the old cloth rabbit.

But something was different.

The missing button eye was gone.

She had removed it.

Inside the rabbit was something hidden.

A tiny memory card.

Matteo stared.

"What is that?"

Sophie looked at Adrian.

Adrian nodded.

"Your father hid it there."

Matteo took the card.

His hands tightened.

"How did you know?"

Adrian looked at Sophie.

"Because your father trusted her."

Matteo looked confused.

"Sophie was five years old."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"Your father trusted her mother."

He looked at Elena.

Elena stepped forward slowly.

"I was supposed to protect Sophie until you found her."

Matteo looked at her.

"You knew all of this?"

Tears appeared in Elena’s eyes.

"I knew pieces."

"Pieces?"

"I knew your father was afraid."

A pause.

"I knew he believed someone inside the family would destroy everything."

Matteo looked at the memory card.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Elena looked down.

"Because I saw what happened to everyone who tried."

Nobody spoke.

The answer was enough.

Fear had controlled the mansion for years.

Not loyalty.

Not respect.

Fear.

Matteo walked toward the old computer on the table.

He inserted the memory card.

The screen flickered.

One video file appeared.

Created eight years ago.

The title was:

FOR MATTEO.

His heart tightened.

He pressed play.

The screen showed his father.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in the same office Matteo grew up in.

For several seconds, his father said nothing.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

"Matteo."

The sound of his father’s voice nearly broke him.

Because he had forgotten how it sounded.

"If you are watching this, it means I failed to keep you away from the truth."

Matteo stood frozen.

His father continued.

"I wanted you to hate me."

A pause.

"I wanted you to believe I abandoned you."

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

"Because hatred is easier to survive than grief."

The room was silent.

His father looked down.

"There is something you must know."

The video stopped.

Everyone looked confused.

The file was corrupted.

Matteo tried again.

Nothing.

Adrian’s expression changed.

"No."

"What?"

Adrian moved closer.

"He wouldn't stop there."

Matteo looked at the screen.

Then suddenly...

the computer turned on by itself.

A second file appeared.

A file that was not there before.

No title.

No date.

Only one word.

MOTHER.

Matteo stared.

His father’s message had not ended.

It had been hidden.

Someone had just unlocked it.

The screen began loading.

Then a new voice came through the speakers.

Not his father.

Not Adrian.

Not Marco.

A woman’s voice.

A voice Matteo knew.

His mother.

May you like

And she whispered:

"Matteo, if you are watching this, it means the man you trusted most has already found you..."
