Chapter 11 - The Father Who Never Died

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because standing outside the mansion doors was a man Matteo Valenti had buried eight years ago.

His father.

Victor Valenti.

The man who taught him everything.

The man whose funeral Matteo watched with his own eyes.

The man whose death changed his entire life.

Matteo stared through the glass doors.

His mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.

Impossible.

That was the only thought.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Impossible.

Behind him, Lucia covered her mouth.

Alessandro looked away.

Luca froze.

Even Marco’s name disappeared from everyone’s mind.

Because the one person who connected every secret...

had returned.

The doors opened slowly.

Victor stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

Different.

But alive.

He looked at Matteo.

And for a moment, he looked like the father from his childhood.

Not the powerful man.

Not the leader.

Just his father.

"Matteo."

The sound of his name almost broke him.

But then Matteo remembered everything.

The lies.

The empty grave.

The years of believing he was alone.

His expression hardened.

"No."

Victor stopped.

Matteo shook his head.

"You don't get to do that."

A silence.

"You don't get to walk back into my life and say my name like nothing happened."

Victor lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Matteo laughed.

A cold laugh.

"Do you?"

He stepped forward.

"Do you know what it felt like to stand at your grave?"

Victor said nothing.

"Do you know what it felt like to hear people tell me you were gone?"

Another step.

"Do you know what it felt like to become the man you wanted me to be because I thought I had nobody left?"

Victor looked at him.

Pain appeared in his eyes.

"I know."

Matteo stopped.

Because somehow...

that answer hurt more.

"How?"

Victor looked around the room.

At Lucia.

At Luca.

At Alessandro.

At the family he had left behind.

"Because I watched."

The room became silent.

Matteo stared.

"You watched?"

Victor nodded.

"Every day."

A pause.

"I watched you take control."

"I watched you become feared."

"I watched you lose pieces of yourself."

Matteo’s hands tightened.

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Victor looked down.

"Because if I came back, they would find you."

"Who?"

Victor looked at the documents on the table.

The same documents that had destroyed Matteo's understanding of his family.

"The people who wanted this family erased."

Matteo stepped closer.

"You keep saying that."

His voice became sharper.

"But nobody tells me who they are."

Victor looked at him.

"Because you were never ready."

Matteo immediately answered.

"I was ready."

Victor looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You were angry."

The words hit.

Because they were true.

Victor continued.

"Anger makes people predictable."

Matteo looked away.

For years, he had believed anger made him stronger.

Now he wondered if someone had used it against him.

Victor walked toward the table.

He picked up the old letter.

"The final heir."

His eyes moved to the symbol.

The broken circle.

"L."

Victor looked at Lucia.

"You found it."

Lucia nodded.

"Matteo found everything."

Victor looked at his son.

A sad smile appeared.

"I knew you would."

Matteo stared.

"You knew?"

Victor nodded.

"I left enough pieces."

"Pieces?"

"You were supposed to discover the truth slowly."

Matteo’s expression changed.

"Not like this."

"No."

Victor looked at him.

"Not like this."

The honesty surprised him.

Because for the first time...

his father was not hiding.

Not completely.

"What happened the night you died?"

Victor became quiet.

Everyone looked at him.

Even Lucia.

Even Alessandro.

Because that was the question that started everything.

Victor took a breath.

"I discovered Marco was not the enemy."

Matteo looked at him.

"And my uncle?"

Victor glanced at Alessandro.

"Your uncle tried to expose the truth."

Alessandro nodded.

"But he failed."

Victor continued.

"The person controlling everything was someone none of us expected."

Matteo felt his chest tighten.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward the portrait on the wall.

The old Valenti family portrait.

The one hanging above the fireplace.

"My father."

Nobody spoke.

Matteo stared.

"Your grandfather?"

Victor nodded.

"He never died believing he lost control."

A pause.

"He died believing someone would continue his work."

Matteo looked confused.

"Continue?"

Victor’s expression became dark.

"He created a second organization."

"An organization inside the organization."

Matteo understood.

A shadow empire.

Hidden beneath the Valenti name.

"Who leads it now?"

Victor did not answer.

That was the first time Matteo saw fear in his father’s eyes.

Not caution.

Fear.

"Father?"

Victor looked at him.

"The person who inherited it."

A pause.

"The person who has been waiting for you to find the truth."

The mansion suddenly shook.

A loud explosion echoed from outside.

Everyone turned.

The windows cracked.

Guards rushed into the room.

"Boss!"

Matteo looked at them.

"What happened?"

The guard was pale.

"Someone breached the east entrance."

Victor’s face changed.

"No."

Matteo noticed.

"You know who it is."

Victor did not answer.

That was enough.

Matteo grabbed his weapon.

"Who?"

The guard looked toward the entrance.

"The attacker left a message."

"What message?"

The guard swallowed.

"He said..."

A pause.

"He was coming home."

The lights flickered.

Then every screen inside the mansion turned on.

A video appeared.

A man sitting in darkness.

Nobody could see his face.

Only his voice.

"Victor."

The entire room froze.

Because the voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

The man continued.

"You really thought hiding your son would protect him?"

Victor stepped closer to the screen.

"No."

The voice laughed.

"You still don't understand."

A pause.

"I was never trying to kill Matteo."

The screen showed a hand placing an old photograph on a table.

A photograph of Matteo as a child.

The man continued.

"I was waiting for him to become exactly what I needed."

Matteo stared.

The photograph on the screen.

His childhood.

His family.

His entire life.

Then the man said:

"Matteo..."

A pause.

"Come meet the person who created you."

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then the mansion’s front gate opened.

And standing outside was a woman holding the original Valenti family record.

The woman everyone believed had died before Matteo was born.
