Chapter 4 - The Woman In The Vault

The face appeared on the security screen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Matteo Valenti was staring at someone who should not exist.
A woman.
Older.
Pale.
Her dark hair was pulled back.
Her eyes looked tired.
But Matteo knew those eyes.
He had seen them in old photographs.
He had seen them in his mother’s belongings.
He had seen them in the memories his father tried to erase.
"Mother..."
The word left his mouth before he could stop it.
The hallway went silent.
Sophie looked up at him.
Elena covered her mouth.
Even Marco Bellini lost his calm expression.
Because everyone knew one thing.
Matteo’s mother had died twelve years ago.
Her funeral had been witnessed by hundreds of people.
Her grave was real.
Her death certificate was real.
Everything about her disappearance from this world was real.
Except the woman standing inside the underground vault.
The woman looking directly into the security camera.
The woman who had just entered the emergency code only Matteo’s father knew.
Matteo stepped closer to the screen.
"Open the camera feed."
The guard immediately moved.
The image became clearer.
The woman turned slightly.
She was not looking at the camera anymore.
She was looking at something inside the vault.
Like she was searching for something.
Like she had been there before.
Matteo felt something he hated.
Confusion.
His entire life had been built around facts.
Numbers.
Evidence.
Truth.
But tonight, every truth he had believed was breaking apart.
His mother was dead.
His father was dead.
Elena had been imprisoned.
A hidden room contained secrets.
And now a ghost was standing inside his family’s underground vault.
"Who else has access down there?"
Matteo’s voice was cold.
The guards exchanged looks.
Nobody wanted to answer.
That was when Matteo turned.
"Answer me."
One guard lowered his head.
"Nobody, sir."
Matteo stared.
"Nobody?"
The guard swallowed.
"The vault was sealed after your father passed away."
"Then explain why someone is inside."
No answer.
Because nobody had one.
Matteo looked at Marco.
His uncle’s advisor stood quietly near the wall.
Too quietly.
"You knew."
Marco did not react.
"I knew your family had secrets."
Matteo walked toward him.
"You knew she was alive."
A long pause.
Then Marco said:
"I knew your father wanted you protected."
The answer was not enough.
Not even close.
Matteo grabbed Marco’s jacket.
The guards immediately tensed.
But Matteo did not care.
"My mother has been alive for twelve years."
His voice dropped.
"And you stood beside me every single day."
Marco looked at him.
"You think I had a choice?"
That sentence stopped Matteo.
Not because it made sense.
Because it sounded like fear.
Real fear.
Marco was not afraid of Matteo.
He was afraid of someone else.
"Who?"
Marco looked away.
"Not here."
Matteo released him.
"Then where?"
Marco said nothing.
That was when the security screen changed.
The woman in the vault was gone.
The camera moved automatically.
Searching.
Then the image froze.
A message appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
The vault door had opened.
By itself.
"Nobody enters."
He gave the order.
Then he walked toward the stairs leading underground.
Elena grabbed his arm.
"Mr. Valenti."
He stopped.
"You cannot go alone."
Matteo looked at Sophie.
The little girl was holding her mother’s hand.
She looked scared.
But she was watching him.
Waiting.
Matteo had spent years being the man everyone feared.
The man who walked into danger without hesitation.
But tonight, he was walking toward something worse.
The truth.
"I need answers."
Elena nodded slowly.
"But be careful."
Matteo looked at her.
She whispered:
"Your father did not hide your mother because he hated her."
A pause.
"He hid her because someone was trying to kill her."
Matteo froze.
"Who?"
Elena looked toward Marco.
But Marco was already gone.
Matteo turned.
The hallway where Marco had been standing was empty.
He disappeared without anyone noticing.
That was impossible.
Unless...
he had planned it.
The underground stairs were older than the mansion itself.
Matteo walked down slowly.
Two guards followed behind him.
The air became colder.
The walls became darker.
The further he went, the more he felt like he was walking into a part of his family’s history that had been buried intentionally.
At the bottom was the vault.
The steel door was open.
Inside were rows of locked cabinets.
Old documents.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Everything his father had hidden.
Matteo entered.
The first thing he noticed was the photograph on the table.
A picture of him as a child.
Standing beside his mother.
But someone had written something on the back.
Matteo turned it over.
I AM SORRY I LEFT YOU.
His fingers tightened.
His mother had written it.
Before she disappeared.
Before everyone believed she died.
He looked around.
"Mother?"
A voice answered.
"Matteo."
He turned.
The woman from the camera stood at the other side of the room.
Closer now.
Real.
Not a recording.
Not a memory.
His mother.
Lucia Valenti.
For several seconds, Matteo could not speak.
Because every emotion he had buried for years came back at once.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
Hope.
"You are alive."
Lucia looked at him.
"I never wanted you to find me like this."
Matteo laughed once.
A cold, broken sound.
"You let me bury you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I had no choice."
"You had twelve years."
"I had twelve years because your father sacrificed everything to keep me alive."
Matteo stepped closer.
"My father lied to me."
Lucia looked down.
"He lied because he loved you."
Those words made Matteo angry.
"Do not tell me what my father did out of love."
Lucia accepted the anger.
She deserved it.
"I know what you believe."
"What I believe?"
Matteo’s voice hardened.
"I believed my parents died."
A pause.
"I believed Elena stole from this family."
Another pause.
"I believed I was in control of my own life."
Lucia looked at him.
"You were never supposed to inherit the empire."
Matteo stopped.
"What?"
She walked toward a small metal box.
She opened it.
Inside was another file.
"My husband wanted you away from this world."
Matteo stared.
"My father wanted me to leave?"
"He wanted you to become something different."
She handed him the file.
"He knew someone would try to use you."
Matteo opened it.
Inside were documents.
Not about business.
Not about money.
About him.
His childhood.
His education.
His future.
And one sentence written by his father.
If Matteo becomes the head of Valenti, it means I failed to protect him.
His hands tightened around the paper.
"Who was he afraid of?"
Lucia looked at the door.
The same fear returned to her face.
"Someone who has been inside this family longer than anyone."
Matteo looked up.
"Marco?"
Lucia did not answer.
She did not need to.
Then suddenly...
the vault lights went out.
Complete darkness.
A sound echoed.
A lock turning.
Matteo reached for his weapon.
"Mother?"
No answer.
The emergency lights flickered on.
Lucia was gone.
The file was gone.
And on the vault wall, written in fresh black ink, were five words.
YOU WERE NEVER THE HEIR.
Matteo stared at the message.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice whispered:
"Matteo... if you want the truth about your mother, come alone."
A pause.
"And bring the girl."
May you like
The call ended.
Then, behind him, the vault door slowly began to close from the outside.
