Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind The Locked Door

The voice came again.

"Matteo..."

Every person standing in the hallway heard it.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone recognized that voice.

Elena.

The missing maid.

The woman who was supposed to have disappeared five days ago.

The woman everyone believed had betrayed the Valenti family.

But now her voice was coming from behind a locked door.

Matteo kept his hand on the old brass handle.

His mind moved faster than anyone could see.

A thousand questions.

A thousand possibilities.

But only one thing mattered.

Elena was alive.

"Sophie."

The little girl looked up at him.

"Is that your mommy?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

She nodded.

"She told me to wait until you came."

Matteo looked at the door.

Then at his guards.

"Nobody enters before me."

One of the guards stepped forward.

"Boss, it could be a trap."

Matteo did not turn around.

"I know."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

That was what frightened people the most about Matteo Valenti.

He never reacted emotionally.

He calculated.

He waited.

He destroyed problems when he understood them.

But tonight was different.

Because behind that door was not an enemy.

It was a woman who had trusted him enough to leave a message.

And a child who had spent days waiting alone for someone to save her mother.

Matteo inserted the key.

The lock turned.

Slowly.

The door opened only a few inches before something stopped it.

A heavy object had been placed behind it.

Matteo pushed harder.

The object moved.

A chair fell to the floor inside the room.

Then silence.

Again.

Matteo entered first.

The guards followed.

Sophie stayed close behind him, holding onto his jacket.

The room was dark.

The smell hit him immediately.

Dust.

Old wood.

And something else.

Medicine.

Matteo’s eyes adjusted.

The room was not a storage room.

It was an old private office.

A forgotten room hidden inside the west wing.

There were shelves filled with documents.

A large wooden desk.

A broken lamp.

And on the floor near the corner...

a small bowl of water.

A blanket.

A plate with untouched food.

Someone had been kept there.

Someone had been living there.

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

"Elena?"

No answer.

He moved deeper into the room.

"Sophie’s here."

A weak sound came from behind the desk.

Matteo immediately turned.

A woman slowly appeared.

Her face was pale.

Her hair was messy.

Her uniform was torn.

But she was alive.

"Elena."

The moment Sophie saw her mother, she ran.

"Mama!"

Elena dropped to her knees and hugged her daughter.

The little girl started crying.

"I waited like you said."

Elena held her tightly.

"You were so brave."

Matteo stood there silently.

For the first time in years, he did not know what to say.

Because the truth was standing in front of him.

The woman everyone accused had been locked inside his mansion.

His home.

His territory.

Someone had done this under his watch.

Elena looked at him.

Fear crossed her face.

"Mr. Valenti..."

"Who did this?"

Her eyes moved toward the guards.

Then back to Matteo.

"You have to listen carefully."

Matteo stepped closer.

"Tell me."

Elena looked at Sophie.

Then lowered her voice.

"It wasn't about the jewelry."

Matteo already knew that.

"The person who framed me wanted everyone to believe I stole something because they needed a reason to remove me."

"Why?"

Elena hesitated.

"Because I found something."

The room became quiet.

"What?"

Elena looked toward the desk.

"There are documents hidden in this room."

Matteo followed her eyes.

"Documents about your family."

His expression changed slightly.

"My family?"

Elena nodded.

"Your father."

Nobody spoke.

Matteo’s father had died eight years earlier.

The official story was a heart attack.

A simple ending.

A painful memory.

Nothing more.

At least, that was what Matteo had believed.

"What did you find?"

Elena swallowed.

"Your father was investigating someone inside the Valenti organization before he died."

The air changed.

Matteo stepped closer.

"Who?"

Elena looked terrified.

She whispered one name.

"Marco Bellini."

The name hit the room like a gunshot.

Matteo’s uncle’s closest advisor.

The man who had worked beside his father for twenty years.

The man who still had access to the mansion.

The man who owned one of the three keys to this room.

Matteo looked around.

"Where are the documents?"

Elena pointed toward the desk.

"Your father hid them here."

Matteo opened the drawers.

Empty.

He searched the shelves.

Nothing.

The room had been cleaned.

Someone had already looked.

Someone knew.

"How long were you locked here?"

Elena looked down.

"Five days."

Matteo stopped.

"Five days?"

She nodded.

"They came after I found the files."

"Who came?"

Elena’s hands tightened around Sophie.

"I never saw his face."

"Then how do you know it was someone from inside?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because he knew things only a Valenti could know."

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

"What things?"

Elena took a shaky breath.

"He knew your mother’s birthday."

A pause.

"He knew the secret passage behind your father’s office."

Another pause.

"And he knew exactly what words would make the security system ignore him."

Matteo said nothing.

Because there was only one person who knew all those things.

A person who had grown up inside this mansion.

A person who had been family.

His uncle.

Suddenly, a sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

A guard looked through the hallway.

"Boss."

Matteo moved toward the door.

"What?"

The guard’s face changed.

"Someone is approaching."

Matteo stepped out.

At the end of the hallway stood Marco Bellini.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

No fear.

Almost like he had expected to find Matteo there.

"Matteo."

His voice was smooth.

"I heard there was a disturbance."

Nobody answered.

Marco looked past him.

Then saw Elena.

For the first time...

his expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Matteo noticed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You look surprised," Matteo said.

Marco smiled slightly.

"Not at all."

Matteo walked closer.

"You should be."

Marco tilted his head.

"Why?"

Matteo held up Elena’s broken name tag.

"Because she was never missing."

The hallway became silent.

Marco stared at the name tag.

Then smiled.

A small smile.

A dangerous smile.

"You finally opened the door."

Matteo watched him carefully.

"What does that mean?"

Marco looked toward the dark room behind Matteo.

Then whispered:

"It means you finally found what your father died trying to hide."

Matteo’s expression hardened.

Before he could respond, every light in the west hallway suddenly turned off.

Complete darkness.

A second later, Sophie screamed.

"Someone is inside!"

Matteo reached for his weapon.

The emergency lights flickered back on.

Elena was still there.

The guards were still there.

Marco was still standing in front of him.

But Sophie was pointing toward the open room.

At the desk.

Because someone had left something there.

A single envelope.

May you like

With Matteo’s name written on it.

And the seal on the front belonged to his dead father.
