Chapter 9 - The Truth Written in My Father’s Hand

The letter shook in my hands.

One sentence.

One sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

"If you are reading this, Adrian has already betrayed you."

I looked at Adrian.

He didn't move.

He didn't defend himself.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Adrian Blackwood always had an answer.

A reason.

A plan.

But now...

Nothing.

Clara stood beside me.

Watching him.

Waiting.

"Tell her."

Her voice was cold.

Adrian looked at her.

"Clara."

"No."

She stepped forward.

"She deserves the truth."

Daniel looked between them.

"Enough."

Clara turned.

"You still want to protect him?"

My father didn't answer.

That was when I realized something.

Everyone in this room knew pieces of my story.

Everyone except me.

I looked down at the letter again.

My father's handwriting.

The handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.

From notes he left on the kitchen table.

From the last letter I thought I would never read.

I forced myself to continue.

The second line was different.

The handwriting was not my father's.

It was smaller.

Sharper.

More rushed.

"Your father never died."

My breath stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

The man standing in front of me.

The man who had just walked through the door.

The man I thought was impossible.

The room disappeared.

There was only that sentence.

Your father never died.

"Who wrote this?"

My voice barely came out.

Clara looked at Adrian.

"He did."

Everyone turned.

Adrian's face changed.

"What?"

I looked at him.

"You wrote this?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Clara laughed.

"Of course you would say that."

She pulled another paper from her coat.

A photograph.

A document.

Evidence.

She placed it on the table.

"His signature."

I looked down.

There it was.

Adrian Blackwood.

My fingers went numb.

"Why?"

I whispered.

"Why would you write that?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Nora, listen to me."

I moved back.

"No."

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

But I couldn't let myself care.

Not again.

"You knew my father was alive."

"No."

"Then why is your name on this?"

He looked at the document.

Then at Clara.

"Because someone wanted it to look like I wrote it."

Clara shook her head.

"You expect her to believe that?"

"I expect her to know the truth."

"The truth?"

Clara's voice broke.

"You don't even know what that word means."

The tension between them felt older than all of us.

Older than the secrets.

Older than the lies.

I looked at Daniel.

"Is it true?"

He didn't answer.

My heart sank.

"Dad."

He closed his eyes.

That hurt more than anything.

Because silence was becoming the answer everyone gave me.

Finally, he spoke.

"I didn't die."

The room went completely silent.

"I was taken."

My chest tightened.

"By who?"

Daniel looked at Victor.

Then Adrian.

Then Clara.

"I was taken by someone inside our family."

I waited.

But he stopped.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw regret.

"The person who knew exactly how to hurt us."

The lights flickered.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Your grandfather."

I froze.

"My grandfather?"

The word felt strange.

I never knew my grandparents.

They were always just names.

Old photographs.

People who existed before my life.

Daniel nodded.

"Your grandfather built the empire your mother inherited."

He looked at Elena.

"He believed power mattered more than family."

Elena looked away.

"And when he realized Nora existed..."

Daniel stopped.

I swallowed.

"What?"

"He decided she was a threat."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because you were the only person who could unite both families."

The Blackwoods.

The Vales.

My blood.

My inheritance.

My identity.

Everything suddenly made sense.

And somehow, that made it worse.

"I wasn't a person to them."

My voice cracked.

"I was a key."

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

I was right.

Clara looked at me.

"I tried to save you."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

"When they took you, I was sixteen."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to tell Mom."

She looked at Elena.

"But she already knew."

Elena broke down.

"I was trying to protect both of you."

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"You were trying to protect the family name."

Elena looked destroyed.

And for the first time, I wondered how many people had sacrificed pieces of themselves trying to survive.

Clara continued.

"They separated us because together we were dangerous."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you had the legal claim."

My head spun.

"What claim?"

She looked at me.

"Your mother placed everything in your name."

I stared.

"Everything?"

"The companies."

"The accounts."

"The properties."

"The entire inheritance."

Clara took a breath.

"You were the true successor."

I looked around the room.

All these powerful people.

All these secrets.

And the entire time...

The thing everyone wanted was me.

Not because of who I was.

Because of what I owned.

A sound suddenly came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone froze.

Adrian moved toward the window.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He stared outside.

Like he had seen something impossible.

I walked toward the window.

And looked.

A black car stood at the gate.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Powerful.

Surrounded by guards.

I didn't recognize him.

But everyone else did.

Victor stepped back.

"No."

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel whispered a name.

A name I had heard before.

The name connected to every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every missing year.

"My father."

Clara grabbed my arm.

"Nora."

Her voice shook.

"Don't let him see you."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

She stared at the man walking toward the mansion.

Because for the first time...

My sister looked afraid.

"Because he didn't come here to take you back."

The front door slowly opened.

And the man standing outside smiled.

"Hello, Nora."

He held an old photograph in his hand.

A photograph of my mother.

May you like

And beside her...

A baby with my face.
