Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

The lights went out.
The mansion disappeared into darkness.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then everyone reached for a weapon.
I stood frozen in the middle of the driveway, still holding the phone against my ear.
The call had ended.
But my mother’s voice remained.
I’m your mother.
Twelve years.
Twelve years believing she was gone.
Twelve years believing I was alone.
And now, in the middle of a storm, a voice from my past had returned.
But instead of bringing comfort…
It brought another warning.
Don’t trust Adrian Blackwood.
I looked at him.
He was standing a few feet away.
The man who had protected me.
The man who had found the truth hidden beneath my life.
The man my mother told me not to trust.
His expression was impossible to read.
But Marcus looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
"Who was it?" Adrian asked.
I lowered the phone.
"My mother."
The silence afterward was louder than the thunder.
Diane stopped breathing.
Marcus closed his eyes.
And Adrian went completely still.
"What did she say?"
I looked at him.
"She said not to trust you."
Something flashed across his face.
Pain.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
"I see."
I hated that answer.
"I see?"
My voice shook.
"That’s all you have to say?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Nora."
"No."
I stepped back.
"Everyone keeps saying my name like that fixes everything."
The anger I had buried for years finally came out.
"You all know things about me."
My voice grew louder.
"My mother. My father. My family. My past."
I pointed at him.
"And you."
Adrian didn’t interrupt.
"You knew who I was before I knew."
His silence confirmed it.
My chest tightened.
"How long?"
"Nora."
"How long did you know?"
A long pause.
Then:
"Before I came tonight."
The answer hurt.
More than I expected.
I laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
"So you came because you knew exactly who I was."
Adrian stepped closer.
"I came because I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
He looked toward the mansion.
Then back at me.
"From the same people who erased your life."
The lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then returned.
But something had changed.
The mansion was no longer empty.
A figure stood at the top of the staircase inside.
Watching us.
A woman.
Older.
Pale.
Her hand gripping the railing.
My breath disappeared.
Because even from that distance…
I knew.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same face I had seen in old photographs.
My mother.
Elena Vale.
Alive.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then she whispered my name.
"Nora."
My knees almost gave out.
Adrian caught my arm.
But I pulled away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
The woman slowly walked down the stairs.
Every step felt unreal.
Diane stared at her like she had seen a ghost.
"You."
My mother stopped.
She looked at Diane.
And her expression became cold.
"You’re still alive."
Diane laughed nervously.
"You should be dead."
My blood turned cold.
Because those words were not an insult.
They were a confession.
My mother reached the bottom of the stairs.
The guards immediately surrounded her.
Adrian raised his hand.
"No."
Everyone stopped.
He looked at Elena.
"Why now?"
My mother looked at him.
There was history there.
Pain.
Anger.
Something unfinished.
"Because she found out."
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
"Who?"
Elena looked at me.
"The people who took Nora from me."
I swallowed.
"Who took me?"
Nobody answered.
My mother stepped closer.
"Your father."
I stared at her.
"What?"
She looked devastated.
"Your father was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"No."
"He trusted the wrong people."
"No."
"He thought he could control them."
My hands started trembling.
"Who?"
Elena looked at Adrian.
Then Marcus.
Then Diane.
And finally me.
"The Blackwoods."
The words landed like a gunshot.
I looked at Adrian.
He didn’t deny it.
That was enough.
My heart broke.
Not because my mother accused him.
Because part of me already knew.
Adrian had secrets.
Everyone did.
"Tell her everything," Elena said.
Adrian’s eyes darkened.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because they’re watching."
My mother looked toward the windows.
A strange fear crossed her face.
"They found us."
Marcus immediately moved.
"Everyone inside."
Nobody argued.
The mansion doors closed behind us.
For the first time in years, I entered a place that was supposed to belong to my family.
But instead of feeling home…
It felt like a prison.
The interior was enormous.
Old paintings covered the walls.
Some showed faces I didn’t recognize.
Some showed people who looked strangely familiar.
I walked past one portrait.
Then stopped.
A young woman stood beside a man.
My mother.
And my father.
But there was someone else.
A child.
A little girl.
Me.
I touched the frame.
"I don’t remember this."
Elena came beside me.
"You weren’t supposed to."
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
She looked away.
"Your memories were changed."
The room went silent.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"There was an accident."
My heart raced.
"An accident?"
"When you were twelve."
I stared at her.
"My father’s death."
She nodded.
"But not only that."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What happened to me?"
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
"You survived something nobody was supposed to survive."
I wanted answers.
I needed them.
But every answer created ten more questions.
"Why did you leave me?"
Elena looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw real pain.
Not the fake sadness Diane used.
Real pain.
"Because staying meant you would die."
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed me.
"You left me to save me?"
She nodded.
"I thought I had more time."
"More time for what?"
She looked toward Adrian.
"For him to finish what he promised."
I turned.
Adrian was standing near the window.
His face was unreadable.
"What promise?"
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Adrian promised your father he would protect you."
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you?"
He didn’t respond.
That silence hurt.
"Did you protect me?"
His eyes met mine.
"I tried."
"That’s not an answer."
"No."
His voice lowered.
"It isn’t."
Before I could say anything else, every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.
Adrian’s guards checked their screens.
Marcus looked down.
Elena grabbed the nearest phone.
Her face changed.
"What is it?"
Nobody answered.
Adrian took the phone.
A photograph appeared.
My photograph.
Taken tonight.
Me standing in the rain.
Beside Adrian.
Below it was one sentence.
A warning.
"She knows who she belongs to."
The room became silent.
Adrian immediately looked toward the security cameras.
Too late.
One camera was already broken.
Marcus stepped closer.
"They’re inside."
A sound came from upstairs.
A slow creak.
Everyone looked toward the second floor.
The same hallway where the locked room was.
The room nobody had opened.
The room that had been sealed for twelve years.
Elena grabbed my hand.
"Don’t go up there."
But I heard something.
A voice.
My father’s voice.
Whispering my name.
"Nora."
I pulled away.
I walked toward the stairs.
Adrian followed.
"Nora, stop."
But I kept going.
Because after twelve years…
I finally heard the one voice I had been waiting for.
I reached the locked door at the end of the hallway.
The handle moved.
Slowly.
May you like
The door opened from the inside.
Someone was waiting for me.
