Chapter 5 - The Room That Held My Past

The door opened.

I expected my father.

I expected answers.

I expected the impossible.

But I didn’t expect to see myself.

A small girl sat inside the room.

She was surrounded by old photographs, documents, and boxes.

For a second, my mind refused to understand.

Then I realized.

It wasn’t a person.

It was a recording.

A projector on the desk flickered.

And a young version of my father appeared on the wall.

My breath disappeared.

Because I hadn’t seen him in twelve years.

Not alive.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

"Hello, Nora."

His voice broke something inside me.

I grabbed the door frame.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

Behind me, Adrian stopped.

Marcus covered his mouth.

Even Elena began crying.

Because this was not a message meant for them.

It was meant for me.

Only me.

The recording continued.

"If you are watching this, it means I failed to protect you."

I shook my head.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

Because I didn’t want to hear it.

I didn’t want another goodbye.

I had already lost him once.

I couldn’t lose him again.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"I know you will have questions."

A small smile appeared on his face.

The same smile I remembered from childhood.

The smile he gave me when he promised everything would be okay.

"I know you will be angry."

My tears started falling.

"But before you hate me, you need to know one thing."

The screen flickered.

"I never abandoned you."

I covered my mouth.

Because that was the one sentence I had needed my whole life.

Not money.

Not power.

Not revenge.

Just that.

I never abandoned you.

The recording continued.

"Nora, if Diane is still alive, then you are in danger."

Everyone became still.

Diane.

Her name changed the atmosphere.

My father looked more serious.

"She will tell you she protected you."

The screen froze for a second.

Then continued.

"She will tell you she had no choice."

My hands tightened.

"She is lying."

Diane, standing behind us, whispered:

"No."

Everyone turned.

For once, she looked small.

The recording continued.

"The person who took you from me was not Diane alone."

My heart stopped.

Not Diane alone.

My father looked down.

Like saying the next words hurt him.

"There was someone inside my family."

Adrian’s expression changed.

Marcus immediately looked at him.

The recording continued.

"Someone I trusted."

The projector made a strange noise.

Then my father’s voice became quieter.

"Someone named Adrian Blackwood."

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t defend himself.

And somehow that hurt more.

The man I thought saved me.

The man who held my hand in the rain.

The man who looked at me like I mattered.

Was connected to the reason my life was destroyed.

I stepped back.

"Nora."

Adrian’s voice was low.

I raised my hand.

"Don’t."

He stopped.

The recording continued.

"But if Adrian is the one who finds you..."

My father paused.

And for the first time, fear appeared on his face.

"Do not assume he is your enemy."

I froze.

Everyone froze.

The message changed direction.

My father looked exhausted.

"Adrian was forced into something he could not escape."

I looked at him.

What?

"He made a promise to me."

The recording flickered.

"He promised he would protect you even if it destroyed him."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Like hearing those words hurt.

My father continued.

"But promises are dangerous."

A pause.

"Especially when powerful people know how to use them."

The projector suddenly cut out.

Darkness filled the room.

Nobody spoke.

My mind was spinning.

Adrian was a liar.

But maybe not the liar I thought.

Diane was guilty.

But maybe not alone.

My mother was alive.

But maybe she had been hiding.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

And I was the only person who knew nothing.

I turned toward Adrian.

"Explain."

He looked at me.

"I can."

"Then do it."

His jaw tightened.

But before he could speak, Elena stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Adrian.

"You don't get to tell her."

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"Elena."

"You had twelve years."

Her voice broke.

"Twelve years while she believed everyone abandoned her."

The room became colder.

Adrian looked away.

And that reaction told me something.

Something important.

"Adrian."

He looked at me.

"Did you know where I was?"

Silence.

I felt my heart sink.

"Did you?"

His answer was barely a whisper.

"Yes."

The truth hurt.

Even though I expected it.

"How long?"

"Since you were seventeen."

I stared at him.

"Seven years."

He nodded.

"You knew Diane was hurting me."

"I was trying to find proof."

"Proof?"

My voice rose.

"I was living like a prisoner."

"I know."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You don’t know."

The anger inside me exploded.

"You had a choice."

His eyes changed.

"You could walk away."

I pointed at myself.

"I couldn’t."

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

I had been trapped.

And he had watched from a distance.

Adrian looked like he wanted to say something.

But he stopped.

That made me even angrier.

"Why?"

I whispered.

"Why didn’t you save me?"

His answer came slowly.

"Because every time I tried..."

He looked at Elena.

"Someone close to you disappeared."

A chill moved through the room.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus answered.

"It means every person who tried to help you became a target."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then the security alarm started.

A sharp sound.

Red lights flashed.

The guards immediately moved.

Adrian turned toward the hallway.

"Everyone stay here."

Nobody listened.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Someone had entered the mansion.

Not through the front door.

Through the underground entrance.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"They know she’s here."

Adrian’s face became cold.

"Get Nora out."

I looked at him.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

I wasn’t running anymore.

Not from Diane.

Not from my past.

Not from the truth.

"I want to know who came."

Adrian looked at me.

"Nora."

"No."

My voice was stronger.

"I spent twelve years being protected by lies."

I stepped toward the hallway.

"I’m done hiding."

The sound of footsteps echoed from below.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Someone wasn’t breaking into the mansion.

Someone was walking in like they owned it.

Adrian pulled me behind him.

The elevator at the end of the hallway began moving.

Everyone stared.

Because nobody was supposed to use that elevator.

It required a special access code.

The numbers appeared one by one.

Floor one.

Floor two.

Floor three.

Then the elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Wearing a black suit.

Holding a photograph in his hand.

He looked directly at me.

Then smiled.

"After twelve years..."

He lifted the photograph.

May you like

"...I finally found my daughter."

And the photograph in his hand was a picture of my mother holding a newborn baby that wasn’t me.
