Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden in My Name

The phone slipped from Diane’s hand and hit the wet pavement.

Adrian Blackwood picked it up before she could reach it.

The message was still glowing.

"She knows the truth."

I watched his face change.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Something worse.

Recognition.

The rain continued falling around us, but suddenly I felt colder than before.

Because Adrian Blackwood was afraid.

And that scared me more than anything.

"Who sent this?" he asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Diane stepped forward.

"Give me that phone."

Adrian didn’t move.

"Answer the question."

She forced a laugh.

A weak attempt to pretend she was still in control.

"You’re making this dramatic for no reason."

Adrian looked at the screen again.

Then at her.

"I asked who sent it."

Diane’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in my life, I saw her without the mask.

Not the perfect stepmother.

Not the woman who convinced everyone she was generous.

Just a frightened person caught in a lie.

I looked at the phone.

The number wasn’t saved.

But I knew something was wrong.

Because Diane had always been careful.

She never panicked.

She never showed fear.

Not when she took my father’s money.

Not when she forced me to sign documents I didn’t understand.

Not when she locked me inside the house and told everyone I was unstable.

But now she was shaking.

And she was looking at me.

Not Adrian.

Me.

"What truth?" I whispered.

The question came out before I could stop it.

Diane’s eyes narrowed.

"Nora."

Just my name.

But the way she said it made my stomach twist.

Like it wasn’t my name.

Like it was a warning.

Adrian noticed.

He stepped between us.

"She asked you a question."

Diane looked at him.

"You don’t know what you’re getting involved in."

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"That’s exactly what I’m trying to find out."

The bodyguards moved closer.

The driveway became silent.

Even the rain felt distant.

Diane looked around.

She knew she had lost.

Not completely.

But enough.

"You think you’re saving her?" Diane said.

Adrian didn’t answer.

"You have no idea who she is."

My heart stopped.

Because that sentence sounded familiar.

I had heard it before.

Years ago.

My father had said something similar.

After my mother died.

I was seventeen.

I remembered standing outside his office door.

I remembered hearing him arguing with someone.

A man I couldn’t see.

"You don’t understand what Nora represents."

That was what my father had said.

I never understood it.

I thought he meant my family.

I thought he meant grief.

But maybe he meant something else.

Adrian looked at me.

"Nora."

I looked up.

"What?"

"Do you remember your mother’s full name?"

The question hit me harder than the rain.

"My mother?"

He nodded.

I swallowed.

"Elena Vale."

Adrian’s face changed slightly.

"Not Elena."

A strange silence followed.

"What?"

He looked at the bracelet in his hand.

Then back at me.

"Your mother’s name wasn’t Elena Vale."

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.

Because my entire life was built on that name.

My birth certificate.

My school records.

Everything.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small leather folder.

He opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Photographs.

Records.

My hands started trembling.

"Where did you get those?"

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he handed me the first photograph.

A woman stood beside a man I recognized.

My father.

But the woman wasn’t my mother.

At least not the woman I remembered.

She was younger.

Elegant.

Powerful.

And she was holding a baby.

Me.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

And a name.

A name I had never seen before.

Nora Blackwood.

I dropped the picture.

"No."

The word escaped my mouth.

Adrian watched me carefully.

"My family has been looking for you for twelve years."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You were never supposed to grow up with Diane."

"No."

"You were supposed to be protected."

I stepped back.

The SUV was behind me.

The mansion was behind me.

The whole world suddenly felt like it was moving too fast.

"Why?"

My voice cracked.

"Why would anyone hide me?"

Adrian looked toward Diane.

And for the first time, I understood something.

He wasn’t just angry.

He was hurt.

Because whatever happened involved him.

"Diane didn't just sell you tonight."

He paused.

"She stole you years ago."

I looked at Diane.

She looked away.

That was the answer.

The one she didn’t want to give.

I felt something breaking inside me.

All those years.

All those moments when I wondered why my father never protected me.

Why my mother’s memories felt incomplete.

Why Diane always looked at me like I was something she hated.

There had been a reason.

There had always been a reason.

"Tell me everything."

My voice surprised even me.

Diane suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed the broken edge of the bracelet from Adrian’s hand.

The sharp metal cut her palm.

Nobody expected it.

She stared at the blood.

Then smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

"You really think you know what happened?"

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"Diane."

"You should ask her about the night her father died."

My breathing stopped.

My father.

The words I avoided for years.

The memory I buried.

The accident everyone told me not to question.

Diane looked directly at me.

"Ask her why she was the last person he called."

I froze.

Because that was impossible.

I was twelve years old when my father died.

I was at home.

Diane told everyone I was asleep.

But I remembered something.

A sound.

A phone ringing.

My father’s voice.

And a sentence I never understood.

"Take Nora and run."

Adrian saw my face.

"You remember something."

I couldn’t answer.

Because suddenly I did.

A room.

A locked door.

My father kneeling in front of me.

His hands shaking.

His eyes full of fear.

"Nora, listen to me."

That night came back.

Not like a memory.

Like a wound reopening.

"Never trust anyone who tells you I abandoned you."

I grabbed my head.

"No..."

Adrian stepped closer.

"What did he say?"

I looked at him.

And whispered the words I had forgotten for twelve years.

"He said..."

My voice broke.

"He said my real family would come for me."

Nobody moved.

Diane’s face went completely white.

Because she knew.

She knew I remembered.

Adrian looked at her.

"Where is the rest of the file?"

Diane said nothing.

"Where is the original record?"

Still nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed a name.

Diane looked terrified.

Adrian reached for it.

But she answered first.

A voice came through the speaker.

A man’s voice.

Old.

Calm.

Dangerous.

"Did you find her?"

Diane stared at me.

Then at Adrian.

The man continued.

"Because if Nora Blackwood is alive..."

A pause.

A long pause.

Then the voice finished.

"...then the person who ordered her disappearance knows she survived."

Adrian grabbed the phone.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

Then the caller whispered one name.

A name Adrian recognized.

His face changed instantly.

Because the man on the other end was supposed to be dead.

May you like

The call ended.

And before anyone could speak, the mansion’s front doors slowly opened behind us.
