Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Was Never Mine

The man stood inside the elevator.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Adrian.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The man who always had an answer.

The man who controlled every room he entered.

Was silent.

The stranger looked at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.

Then he lifted the photograph again.

A baby.

A woman.

My mother.

But not me.

My hands became cold.

"Who are you?"

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

The man smiled.

"My name is Victor Vale."

The name hit me.

Vale.

My family name.

The one I had carried my entire life.

The one I thought belonged to me.

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

"Get away from her."

Victor looked amused.

"Still protecting her?"

His eyes moved to Adrian.

"After everything you did?"

The room changed.

Again.

Every answer created another mystery.

I looked at Adrian.

"What does he mean?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

Victor laughed softly.

"Of course he didn't tell you."

He walked out of the elevator.

The guards raised their weapons.

Victor didn’t even look at them.

"Put those away."

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus spoke.

"Do it."

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked terrified.

"Why?"

Victor smiled.

"Because Marcus remembers what happens when people point weapons at me."

The guards slowly lowered their weapons.

I watched everything.

Everyone knew him.

Everyone feared him.

Everyone except me.

I was always the last person to know.

"Who is the baby?"

I pointed at the photograph.

Victor looked at me.

"The question isn't who she is."

He stepped closer.

"The question is why you were chosen."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

He looked at Elena.

"You didn't tell her?"

Elena’s face was full of pain.

"She deserved the truth."

Victor laughed.

"The truth?"

He looked around the room.

"None of you have ever given her the truth."

His eyes returned to me.

"Not Adrian."

"Not your mother."

"Not even your father."

Hearing my father’s name made me angry.

"Leave him out of this."

Victor’s expression softened slightly.

"You still defend him."

"Because he loved me."

A strange silence followed.

Victor looked away.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

"He did."

That surprised me.

I expected hatred.

But instead, Victor sounded like someone mourning.

"Then tell me."

I stepped forward.

"Tell me everything."

Adrian looked at me.

"Nora."

"No."

I turned toward him.

"Every person in this room has made decisions about my life."

My voice shook.

"But nobody asked me."

I looked at Victor.

"So you will."

Victor studied me.

Then slowly nodded.

"Your father and I were brothers."

The room froze.

I stared.

"What?"

"Not by blood."

He continued.

"But by choice."

Marcus looked down.

Victor walked toward the old photographs on the wall.

"Your father, Daniel Vale, and I built an empire together."

I listened.

"Then Elena entered our lives."

He glanced at my mother.

"Everything changed."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Victor."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"She needs to know."

I looked at my mother.

She didn’t stop him.

"Your mother wasn't just Elena Vale."

Victor said.

"She was Elena Blackwood."

My eyes moved to Adrian.

Another connection.

Another secret.

Adrian’s family.

My mother.

My past.

All connected.

"She married Daniel to escape them."

Victor continued.

"But when she had you..."

He stopped.

The room became silent.

"When she had me?"

Victor looked at the photograph.

"You weren't supposed to exist."

The words felt like a knife.

I stepped back.

"What?"

Elena immediately moved toward me.

"Nora, listen."

"No."

My voice broke.

"What does that mean?"

Victor answered.

"It means someone wanted your mother to lose you before you were born."

I felt dizzy.

"Who?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor looked at Adrian.

My heart sank.

"No."

Adrian looked at me.

"Nora."

"Was it your family?"

His silence was enough.

But then he shook his head.

"No."

Victor laughed.

"Still protecting them."

Adrian’s eyes turned cold.

"You don't know what happened."

"I know exactly what happened."

Victor looked at him.

"You were there."

The words froze the room.

I looked at Adrian.

"You were there?"

Adrian didn’t deny it.

A thousand thoughts crossed my mind.

The rain.

The rescue.

The lies.

The years.

"What happened the night my father died?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time, I saw him break.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

"I was sixteen."

The answer surprised me.

"I was young."

He looked at me.

"Your father saved my life."

Silence.

"He took me away from people who wanted to use me."

My breathing slowed.

"He treated me like family."

Adrian looked toward the floor.

"When he found out someone was coming for you, he asked me to protect you."

"Then why didn't you?"

The question came out immediately.

His face changed.

"Because I failed."

Nobody moved.

Adrian continued.

"I found you."

My heart stopped.

"After the accident."

He looked at me.

"You were twelve."

A memory flashed.

A dark road.

A man carrying me.

A voice telling me not to sleep.

I grabbed my head.

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"I tried to take you away."

"From who?"

He looked at Diane.

Then Victor.

Then Elena.

"Everyone."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Then why did I end up with Diane?"

No one answered.

Victor did.

"Because someone betrayed Adrian."

Adrian turned.

"Victor."

"You deserve to know."

Victor looked at me.

"Someone changed the plan."

He pointed at the photograph.

"Someone replaced you."

The room became silent.

"The baby in the picture..."

I whispered.

"Who is she?"

Victor looked at me.

"That was the child they wanted everyone to believe was Nora Vale."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

He nodded.

"You were hidden."

"Why?"

"Because you were the real heir."

The words felt impossible.

"The real heir to what?"

Victor walked closer.

"The Blackwood-Vale fortune."

I laughed.

A broken sound.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does."

He placed the photograph on the table.

"The baby they showed the world was fake."

My hands trembled.

"And me?"

Victor looked at me.

"You were erased."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

That was the truth.

My life wasn't stolen because I was worthless.

It was stolen because I mattered.

Suddenly, the mansion alarm sounded again.

But this time, it wasn't an attack warning.

It was a security breach.

Adrian checked his phone.

His face changed.

"What?"

Marcus asked.

Adrian didn't answer.

He showed the screen.

A live camera feed.

The front gate.

A car had arrived.

A woman stepped out.

Everyone recognized her.

Elena dropped the phone in her hand.

"No."

Victor went pale.

Marcus whispered:

"That can't be possible."

I looked at them.

"Who is it?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian said the name.

The name that made my mother start crying.

The name that made Victor step backward.

The name of the person everyone believed had died twelve years ago.

May you like

"Daniel Vale."

My father was standing outside the gate.
