Chapter 7 - The Father Who Never Left

The gates opened.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

Because the man standing outside looked exactly like the ghost from my memories.

Older.

Tired.

But still him.

My father.

Daniel Vale.

I stood behind the window, unable to move.

For twelve years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined him walking through the door.

I imagined him apologizing.

I imagined asking him why he left me.

Why he abandoned me.

Why he chose to disappear.

But I never imagined him being alive.

Elena covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Daniel..."

Her voice broke.

Victor stepped back.

"This isn't possible."

Adrian stared at the security monitor.

His face was impossible to read.

But his hands were clenched.

He was afraid.

That was the thing I noticed.

Adrian Blackwood was afraid of my father.

The gates opened completely.

Daniel walked through.

Slowly.

Like he knew everyone inside was watching.

Like he knew exactly what he was walking into.

The front doors opened before he reached them.

Adrian stood there.

The two men looked at each other.

Two people connected by a past I didn’t understand.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Where is she?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Daniel looked past him.

And saw me.

Everything stopped.

For a moment, I was twelve years old again.

A little girl waiting by a window.

Waiting for her father to come home.

Waiting for him to say everything was okay.

But he never came.

Until now.

"Nora."

Hearing my name from his mouth hurt.

Because I remembered.

I remembered the way he used to say it.

Like it was the most important word in the world.

I stepped forward.

My legs moved before my mind could stop them.

"You’re alive."

My voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel nodded.

"I am."

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

"You’re alive."

I repeated it.

"You let me think you were dead."

His face broke.

"I know."

"You let me think you left me."

"I know."

"You let me hate you."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

The anger inside me burned.

"Then why?"

The room became silent.

"Why did you let me suffer?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

Because there was no easy answer.

"I didn't."

I stared at him.

"Don't."

My voice shook.

"Don't tell me you didn't."

He looked at me.

"I tried to come back."

The words made everyone freeze.

"What?"

Daniel stepped inside.

The doors closed behind him.

"I tried."

He looked at Elena.

"I tried every day."

My mother cried silently.

"But they were watching."

I shook my head.

"Who?"

Daniel looked around the room.

At Victor.

At Adrian.

At Diane.

Then back at me.

"Everyone who wanted you gone."

My heart tightened.

"Tell me the truth."

Daniel nodded.

"I will."

He looked at Adrian.

"I owe her that."

Adrian looked away.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"The night of the accident was not an accident."

I already knew.

But hearing him say it made it real.

"Someone tried to kill you."

He looked at me.

"And they almost succeeded."

I remembered the darkness.

The sound of broken glass.

The feeling of someone holding my hand.

"Adrian found you first."

I looked at him.

Adrian remained silent.

"He was supposed to take you somewhere safe."

Daniel continued.

"But someone inside our circle betrayed him."

Victor lowered his eyes.

I noticed.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Diane.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Diane stood near the wall.

Quiet.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"Not her."

Victor said suddenly.

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel frowned.

"You still defend her?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Diane.

"I know who did it."

The room became tense.

"Then say it."

Victor looked at Adrian.

"No."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Victor."

But Victor continued.

"The person who betrayed Daniel..."

He paused.

"The person who changed Nora's identity..."

He looked directly at Adrian.

"...was someone who knew exactly how to manipulate both sides."

My stomach dropped.

Everyone was looking at Adrian.

No.

Not again.

I was tired of everyone looking at him like he held the answer.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"You think it was me."

Victor didn't respond.

That was the answer.

My chest hurt.

Because a part of me still wanted to defend him.

The man who saved me.

The man who protected me.

But another part remembered.

He knew.

He watched.

He waited.

"Adrian."

He looked at me.

I hated how much pain was in his eyes.

"Tell me."

Silence.

"Nora."

"Tell me the truth."

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

"I was there the night your father disappeared."

The room went completely still.

Daniel looked at him.

"You promised me."

Adrian looked at him.

"I tried."

"Trying wasn't enough."

The words hit harder than a scream.

Adrian looked broken.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Maybe he wasn't hiding because he was guilty.

Maybe he was hiding because he failed.

But failure still destroyed lives.

"Where did you go?" I asked Daniel.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at me.

"I was captured."

My breath stopped.

"By who?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me.

"By someone who wanted your inheritance."

Victor stepped closer.

"Daniel."

But my father continued.

"They wanted me to sign everything over."

"And you didn't."

"No."

He looked at me.

"Because everything belonged to you."

The words felt unreal.

"I was never trying to protect money, Nora."

He touched his chest.

"I was protecting your future."

I looked away.

Because part of me wanted to believe him.

And part of me was terrified.

"Then why didn't you escape?"

Daniel looked at Elena.

"Because every escape attempt put you in more danger."

My mother closed her eyes.

"We thought they would stop searching."

"But they didn't."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

He looked at me.

"They never stopped."

Suddenly, the mansion lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

Adrian immediately turned.

"Lock the doors."

The guards moved.

Too late.

The security system displayed a new message.

Not a warning.

A video.

A live feed.

The screen showed the city streets outside.

Then the camera moved.

Someone was standing across from the mansion.

Watching.

A woman.

Everyone recognized her.

Elena dropped the phone in her hand.

"No..."

Daniel turned pale.

Victor stepped backward.

"Impossible."

I looked at them.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

The woman on the screen slowly raised her head toward the camera.

Then she smiled.

A message appeared beneath the video.

Three words.

"Bring her home."

Adrian grabbed the control panel.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the woman.

May you like

And because he knew the truth nobody had told me.

The woman outside was my sister.
