Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Disappearance

The man stood in the doorway.
Nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Elena.
Not Adrian.
Not even Alexander.
Because the person standing there was someone they all thought was gone.
The man looked older.
His hair was completely gray.
His face carried years of pain.
But his eyes…
I knew those eyes.
Because I had seen them in my childhood.
In old photographs.
In memories that never made sense.
My grandfather.
William Blackwood.
The man everyone believed had died fifteen years ago.
He looked at me.
And smiled.
"Nora."
My body froze.
I hated that everyone knew my name.
I hated that everyone had a story about me.
A secret.
A plan.
A reason.
Except me.
Alexander slowly turned.
"You shouldn't be here."
William smiled.
"Neither should she."
His eyes moved toward me.
"Yet here we are."
Adrian immediately stepped between us.
"No."
William looked amused.
"Still protecting her?"
Adrian's voice was cold.
"Stay away from her."
William laughed quietly.
"You sound exactly like your father."
The mention of Adrian's father changed his expression.
A flicker of pain.
Only for a moment.
Then it disappeared.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who is he?"
Nobody answered.
I was done waiting.
"Who is he?"
William answered himself.
"I am the reason your life was destroyed."
The words hit harder than anything.
I stared at him.
"What?"
Elena whispered.
"William..."
He ignored her.
"I am the reason you lost your childhood."
My hands tightened.
"Why?"
The question came out broken.
"Why would you do that?"
William looked at me.
And for a second, I saw something unexpected.
Regret.
"I did what I believed was necessary."
I almost laughed.
Everyone always said that.
Necessary.
Protection.
No choice.
Those words had followed me my entire life.
"You all use the same excuse."
My voice shook.
"But somehow I’m always the one who suffers."
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
William walked further inside.
The guards raised their weapons.
He ignored them.
"Your mother was supposed to be the next leader of both families."
I looked at Elena.
"Leader?"
William nodded.
"The Vales and the Blackwoods were supposed to become one."
I frowned.
"Because of marriage?"
"Because of blood."
He looked at me.
"Because of you."
The room became silent.
"Your birth changed everything."
I shook my head.
"I was a child."
"Exactly."
William's voice became softer.
"A child nobody could control."
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
He looked at Daniel.
"Your father wanted to take you away."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Because you wanted to use her."
William didn't deny it.
"I wanted to protect the family."
"No."
Daniel's voice was filled with anger.
"You wanted power."
William looked at him.
"And you were willing to destroy everything to stop me."
The tension between them felt ancient.
Like a war that had lasted years.
I looked at Elena.
"Why did you let this happen?"
Her tears fell.
"I tried to stop it."
"But you didn't."
She closed her eyes.
"No."
The honesty hurt.
"I didn't."
The room went quiet.
Elena looked at me.
"When William discovered you were the true heir, he believed everyone around you would eventually betray you."
A bitter smile appeared.
"And he was right."
I looked away.
Because she was.
Everyone had.
"Your father tried to hide you."
Daniel nodded.
"He created a plan."
"What plan?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Adrian looked down.
And I knew.
Another secret.
"Tell me."
Daniel took a breath.
"The plan was simple."
"Get you away from both families."
"Give you a normal life."
"Let you grow up without knowing what you were."
I looked at Adrian.
"And he was part of it."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
My heart tightened.
"Then why did he betray me?"
Silence.
Everyone looked at Adrian.
He finally spoke.
"I didn't."
William laughed.
"Of course."
Adrian turned toward him.
"You don't get to rewrite history."
William's smile disappeared.
"Then tell her."
Adrian remained silent.
"Tell her what happened the night her father disappeared."
I looked at Adrian.
Again.
Always that night.
Always the missing piece.
"Tell me."
His eyes met mine.
"I followed orders."
My chest hurt.
"What orders?"
"Your grandfather's."
The room froze.
William smiled.
"I knew you would eventually understand."
Adrian ignored him.
"I was young."
He looked at me.
"I believed I could control the situation."
"And?"
His face changed.
"I was wrong."
The honesty was painful.
"What happened?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Then Elena.
Then me.
"The night you disappeared..."
He paused.
"I was supposed to take you somewhere safe."
I listened.
"But someone changed the location."
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian looked at William.
"Him."
William didn't react.
I stared at my grandfather.
"You took me?"
William looked at me.
"No."
A pause.
"I saved you."
The anger inside me exploded.
"Saved me?"
I stepped closer.
"You erased my life."
"I removed you from a war."
"You made me believe nobody wanted me."
William's face changed.
"I made sure you survived."
"No."
My voice broke.
"You made sure I was alone."
For the first time, William looked away.
And I realized something.
He knew.
He knew exactly what he had done.
A phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked.
Not one phone.
All of them.
The screens lit up.
The same message appeared.
A video file.
From an unknown sender.
Alexander opened it.
The screen showed a hospital room.
An old recording.
A woman lying in bed.
My mother.
Elena covered her mouth.
"No."
The video played.
A younger Elena looked directly into the camera.
Her face was full of fear.
"If you are watching this..."
She swallowed.
"...then I failed."
Nobody breathed.
The younger Elena continued.
"Nora cannot know the truth until the right moment."
My heart stopped.
"What truth?"
The video continued.
"Because Nora is not the only child who survived."
Everyone froze.
The screen flickered.
Then another person appeared beside Elena.
A little girl.
A child.
A child I recognized.
Same eyes.
Same face.
My sister.
Clara.
But younger.
Much younger.
The recording showed Elena holding both babies.
One in each arm.
Then she whispered:
"I lied about which daughter was the heir."
The video stopped.
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
I slowly turned toward Clara.
Because she was already crying.
And then she said the words that made my entire world collapse.
"Nora..."
She looked at me.
"I was never your sister."
May you like
A pause.
"And you were never the real daughter they were protecting."
