Chapter 8 - The Man Who Knew Where The Baby Was

The door handle moved.

Everyone in the NICU froze.

Dante Valenti stood in front of the others.

His body was still.

His eyes were not.

They were watching.

Waiting.

The kind of patience that came from years of surviving situations where one wrong move meant death.

Clara held her breath.

Adrian stepped backward.

Marco reached inside his jacket.

Dante noticed.

"Don't."

Marco stopped.

Because Dante didn't need a weapon.

Not yet.

The handle moved again.

Slowly.

Then the door opened.

A security officer stood outside.

But something was wrong.

His uniform was perfect.

His badge looked real.

But his eyes were empty.

Not the eyes of a man protecting a hospital.

The eyes of someone searching.

"Mr. Valenti."

Dante stared.

"Who are you?"

The officer smiled.

"Hospital security."

Dante looked at the badge.

Then at the man's hands.

No wedding ring.

No marks from wearing gloves.

No radio.

Small details.

Things most people missed.

But Dante never missed anything.

"You don't work here."

The man's smile disappeared.

For one second.

Only one.

But it was enough.

Dante moved.

The fake officer reached inside his jacket.

Marco reacted first.

He pushed Dante aside.

A loud sound filled the room.

Everyone dropped.

The bullet hit the wall behind them.

Clara screamed.

The man moved again.

But Dante was already there.

Years of survival took over.

He grabbed the man's arm.

Forced him against the door.

The weapon fell to the floor.

The fake officer struggled.

"You have no idea what you're protecting."

Dante tightened his grip.

"Where is my son?"

The man laughed.

A quiet laugh.

"Still asking the wrong question."

Dante's eyes hardened.

"What is the right question?"

The man looked at him.

"Who is your son?"

The words stopped everyone.

Because even now...

Even after everything...

That question still remained.

Dante pushed him harder.

"Tell me."

The man smiled.

"You think this is about a baby."

He looked around the room.

"You think someone wanted to steal your child."

A pause.

"You don't understand."

Dante leaned closer.

"Then explain."

The man's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

"Your son isn't valuable because he's yours."

Silence.

"He is valuable because of what he carries."

Dante's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Victor.

And smiled.

"Ask him."

Everyone turned.

Victor's face changed.

Dante slowly looked at him.

"What does he mean?"

Victor didn't respond.

That was the answer.

Dante released the fake officer and walked toward Victor.

"You knew."

Victor looked exhausted.

"I knew part of it."

Dante stopped.

"Part?"

Victor swallowed.

"Elena discovered that your father left something behind."

"The records."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"Something bigger."

Dante stared.

"What?"

Victor looked at Marco.

Then at the photograph of Elena.

"Your father created a private trust."

Dante frowned.

"A trust?"

"Not money."

Victor lowered his voice.

"Information."

Clara looked confused.

"What kind of information?"

Victor answered:

"Everything your family ever owned. Every secret agreement. Every hidden account. Every person who betrayed him."

Dante understood.

A record.

A complete record.

A weapon.

"Where is it?"

Victor looked at him.

"Your son."

The room went silent again.

Dante's face changed.

"No."

Victor nodded.

"Your father designed it that way."

"That makes no sense."

"He knew his enemies would come for him."

Victor continued.

"So he created a final safeguard."

Dante looked toward the empty incubator.

"A baby?"

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"The child is only the key."

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the entire nightmare had a different meaning.

The baby switch.

The explosion.

Elena's death.

The missing records.

Everything connected.

Someone wasn't trying to steal Dante's son.

They were trying to control what his son represented.

Clara stepped closer.

"But how would a baby be a key?"

Victor looked at her.

"Because your father trusted blood more than technology."

Dante looked at him.

"DNA."

Victor nodded.

"Only someone from the Valenti bloodline can access it."

The room went silent.

Dante looked at the flash drive.

Then at the photograph.

Then at Victor.

"And Elena knew."

"Yes."

"She knew our son was in danger."

"Yes."

"She knew the explosion could happen."

Victor looked down.

"Yes."

Dante froze.

The answer hurt.

"She knew?"

Victor didn't speak.

Dante grabbed his shoulder.

"She knew?"

Victor finally looked at him.

"Elena discovered the plan hours before it happened."

Dante stepped back.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Victor's voice became quiet.

"Because she thought they were watching you."

Dante looked confused.

"Watching me?"

"Yes."

Victor swallowed.

"She believed if you knew, they would come after you first."

Dante looked at the empty incubator.

His wife's final decision.

She tried to protect him.

She tried to protect their child.

And she died because of it.

Clara quietly said:

"Then where is the baby?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question that mattered.

The fake security officer suddenly laughed from the floor.

Dante turned.

The man looked at him.

"You really don't know."

Dante stepped closer.

"Know what?"

The man smiled.

"The baby you're looking for..."

A pause.

"Is not the baby they took."

Dante's expression changed.

"What?"

The man continued.

"The child taken from the NICU was a distraction."

Everyone froze.

Clara whispered:

"No."

The man looked at Dante.

"Your real son was moved before the power went out."

Dante felt his blood run cold.

"Where?"

The man smiled.

"Ask the nurse."

Everyone turned toward Clara.

Her face changed.

"No."

Dante stared at her.

"Clara."

She shook her head.

"I don't know anything."

But her voice was different.

Not afraid.

Guilty.

Dante noticed.

"Clara."

The nurse's eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to tell you."

The room became silent.

"Tell me what?"

She looked down.

"I was the one who moved the baby."

Nobody moved.

Dante stared at her.

"You."

Clara cried silently.

"I didn't steal him."

Her voice broke.

"I saved him."

Dante stepped closer.

"Where is my son?"

Clara looked at him.

And whispered:

"I hid him where nobody would ever think to look."

Dante waited.

Clara reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small hospital key card.

A place number was written on it.

Room 0.

Dante frowned.

"There is no Room 0."

Clara looked toward the underground elevator.

"There is."

Her voice dropped.

"It was built before this hospital opened."

The lights suddenly went out again.

But this time, nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

Someone had cut the power.

A second later, Clara's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned completely white.

Dante saw the name.

It was a name that should have been impossible.

May you like

Because the caller was listed as:

Elena Valenti.
