Chapter 5 - The Name Written On The Birth Certificate

The nurse was still standing in the doorway.

The folder in her hands shook.

Nobody spoke.

Not Dante.

Not Clara.

Not even Adrian.

Because everyone understood what those words meant.

There was another father.

Dante slowly walked toward her.

"Give me the file."

The nurse looked at Adrian first.

That small movement did not escape Dante.

He stopped.

"Why are you looking at him?"

The nurse lowered her eyes.

"I was told never to open it."

"By who?"

She didn't answer.

Dante reached out.

"Give me the file."

This time, she obeyed.

The folder landed in his hand.

Heavy.

Like it carried more than paper.

Like it carried nineteen days of lies.

Dante opened it.

The first page was the standard birth report.

Mother.

Elena Valenti.

Delivery date.

Nineteen days earlier.

Emergency cesarean.

Premature male infant.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Then he reached the bottom.

The father's name was covered with black ink.

Dante stared.

Someone had deliberately erased it.

Not changed.

Not corrected.

Erased.

Clara stepped beside him.

"Someone tried to hide it."

Dante flipped the page.

The next document was different.

A handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

The child cannot be registered under Valenti.

Dante's eyes hardened.

"Who wrote this?"

Nobody answered.

He looked at Adrian.

"Who wrote this?"

The doctor looked broken.

"I don't know."

Dante laughed quietly.

A cold sound.

"Everyone in this hospital says they don't know."

He threw the folder onto the counter.

"Yet everyone knows enough to be afraid."

The woman in the dark coat finally spoke.

"Because fear kept them alive."

Dante turned toward her.

"You."

She didn't move.

"You know who changed the records."

The woman looked at the empty incubator.

"I know who ordered it."

Dante stepped closer.

"Name."

She remained silent.

Dante's voice dropped.

"Name."

The woman looked directly at him.

"Your brother."

The room went still.

Clara looked confused.

Adrian looked away.

Dante didn't move.

Because for a moment, the words didn't make sense.

"My brother is dead."

The woman shook her head.

"No."

Dante stared at her.

"He died eight years ago."

"That's what you were told."

The sentence hit harder than anything else.

Because Dante knew betrayal.

He knew enemies.

He knew people lied.

But family was different.

Family was the one place he never expected to find a knife.

"You are lying."

The woman looked at him.

"I wish I was."

Dante grabbed the folder again.

"My brother has nothing to do with this."

The woman didn't respond.

Instead, she reached into her coat again.

Clara immediately stepped back.

But this time, the woman pulled out a small key.

An old metal key.

She placed it on the table.

"He left this for Elena."

Dante stared.

"Elena knew him?"

The woman nodded.

"She found out the truth before the explosion."

Dante's chest tightened.

"What truth?"

The woman looked at the empty incubator.

"Your family has been hiding a child for years."

Nobody spoke.

Clara looked at Adrian.

"Another child?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

Dante turned toward him.

"You knew."

The doctor looked ashamed.

"I knew there was a secret."

"But you didn't tell me."

"I was trying to protect Elena."

Dante's expression changed.

"You failed."

Adrian accepted the words.

Because they were true.

Dante picked up the key.

"Where does this open?"

The woman looked at him.

"A place your wife trusted."

"Where?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The old Valenti family house."

Dante froze.

That house had been abandoned for years.

After his brother's death, he had never returned.

Too many memories.

Too many unanswered questions.

"Why would Elena leave something there?"

The woman looked at him.

"Because she knew you would never look."

Dante's phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone turned.

Another unknown message.

Dante opened it.

A picture appeared.

A room.

An old nursery.

A small wooden crib.

And on the wall...

A photograph.

Dante zoomed in.

His breath stopped.

It was Elena.

Holding a baby.

But the baby was not newborn.

The picture had been taken months before the explosion.

Clara whispered:

"Mr. Valenti..."

Dante stared.

Because beside Elena stood another man.

A man he recognized.

His dead brother.

Marco Valenti.

Alive.

Holding the child.

The message below the picture appeared.

Your brother didn't die. He disappeared.

Dante looked up.

His entire world had shifted again.

His brother.

His wife.

The missing baby.

The false records.

Everything was connected.

Then another message arrived.

This one had no picture.

Only words.

Come alone if you want to see your son.

Dante immediately grabbed his coat.

Clara stopped him.

"No."

He looked at her.

"I need to go."

"You don't know who sent that."

"I know."

His eyes were cold.

"Someone who has my son."

The woman in the dark coat stepped forward.

"If you go there alone, you won't come back."

Dante looked at her.

"Then tell me where to go."

She remained silent.

Because she knew something.

Something worse.

Dante noticed.

"What?"

The woman looked toward the hospital entrance.

Then at Adrian.

Then whispered:

"They already know you're coming."

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The security doors opened.

A man stepped inside.

Holding a gun.

May you like

And he said one name:

"Dante."
