Chapter 7 - The Man Behind The Betrayal

The man stepped into the NICU.
Dante Valenti did not move.
Because he knew him.
He knew the expensive suit.
The calm expression.
The confident walk.
The face that had stood beside him during his wedding.
The face that had comforted him after Elena died.
"Victor."
The name came out like a warning.
Victor Romano stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The room was filled with disbelief.
Because Victor was not an enemy.
He was family.
Not by blood.
But by years of loyalty.
He had been Dante's father's closest advisor.
He had helped Dante build his empire.
He had protected him when they were young.
He had held Elena's hand at the hospital after the explosion.
He had told Dante the same words everyone else told him.
"We couldn't save her."
Now he stood in front of him.
In the middle of the same hospital.
With the same secret surrounding his son's disappearance.
Dante's expression became colder.
"You."
Victor looked at him.
"I know how this looks."
Dante laughed quietly.
"Do you?"
He stepped forward.
"You knew."
Victor remained silent.
"You knew Elena was investigating the hospital."
Silence.
"You knew my son was in danger."
Silence.
"And you watched me sit beside that incubator for nineteen days."
Victor lowered his eyes.
Dante's voice became sharper.
"You watched me believe my child was safe."
Victor finally spoke.
"I was trying to protect you."
The words made Dante stop.
Not because he believed them.
Because he hated hearing them.
Everyone who betrayed him always used the same excuse.
Protection.
Family.
Necessary choices.
"I don't need protection from the people who destroy my family."
Victor looked at Marco.
Then at Adrian.
Then back at Dante.
"You have no idea what you walked into."
Dante held up the flash drive.
"Then explain this."
Victor's eyes changed.
Only slightly.
But Dante saw it.
The flash drive mattered.
"What is on it?"
Dante asked.
Victor didn't answer.
Marco stepped forward.
"The truth."
Victor looked at him.
"You should have stayed dead."
The words shocked everyone.
Dante turned toward Marco.
Then back to Victor.
"You knew Marco was alive."
Victor said nothing.
Dante understood.
Another lie.
Another secret.
His entire life had become a room full of locked doors.
And everyone had the keys except him.
"How long?"
Victor looked confused.
"How long what?"
"How long have you been lying to me?"
The question was quiet.
But heavier than anger.
Victor looked away.
"Since before Elena died."
Dante felt the answer hit him.
Before.
Not after.
Not during the chaos.
Before.
"You were involved."
Victor shook his head.
"No."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Then tell me what happened."
Victor took a slow breath.
"Your father built an empire."
Nobody spoke.
"But he also built enemies."
Dante stared at him.
"Old enemies."
Victor nodded.
"People who wanted revenge."
Marco interrupted.
"That isn't the whole story."
Victor looked at him.
"Don't."
Dante turned.
"What is he hiding?"
Marco looked at Victor.
"Tell him."
Victor remained silent.
Dante stepped forward.
"Tell me."
The older man looked exhausted.
Like he had carried this secret for years.
"Your father wasn't killed by his enemies."
Dante froze.
"What?"
Victor looked at him.
"He was betrayed by someone close."
The room became silent.
Dante's mind moved quickly.
Every piece.
Every secret.
Every missing answer.
"Who?"
Victor didn't answer.
Dante grabbed his collar.
"Who killed my father?"
Nobody moved.
Because they had never seen Dante lose control like this.
Not even enemies.
Victor looked into his eyes.
And whispered:
"Your uncle."
Dante released him.
The words were impossible.
His uncle.
The man who raised him after his father died.
The man who told him family was everything.
Another lie.
Marco stepped closer.
"Your uncle created the system that allowed them to move children through the hospital."
Clara looked horrified.
"Why?"
Victor looked at the floor.
"Because one child threatened everything."
Dante looked toward the empty incubator.
"My son."
Victor nodded.
"Your son inherited something."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Victor looked at the flash drive.
"The company records."
Dante stared.
"What does my newborn son have to do with company records?"
Victor hesitated.
Then answered:
"Elena discovered your father left something behind."
Marco continued.
"Something hidden in your family bloodline."
Dante looked between them.
"This is about money?"
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"Power?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Victor looked at the baby monitors.
"Control."
The word stayed in the room.
Because Dante understood.
This was never just about replacing a child.
Someone wanted access to something.
Something only Dante's son could unlock.
Clara looked confused.
"That doesn't make sense."
Victor looked at her.
"It will."
He reached into his jacket.
Dante immediately raised his hand.
Everyone froze.
Victor slowly removed a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
"This was Elena's."
Dante stared.
Another message from his wife.
Another piece of her left behind.
"Where did you get this?"
Victor looked at him.
"She gave it to me the day before the explosion."
Dante didn't move.
"Why didn't you give it to me?"
Victor looked away.
"Because she asked me not to."
The answer hurt.
Dante picked up the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Not old.
Recent.
Elena standing outside the hospital.
Holding the same baby from the NICU.
But behind her was someone else.
Someone watching her.
Someone Dante recognized.
His own uncle.
Dante stared.
Then he saw something else.
Written on the back of the photo.
A sentence.
The person closest to you is the one who will take him.
Dante's breathing slowed.
Because Elena knew.
She knew someone close to him would betray him.
Victor watched him.
"I tried to stop it."
Dante looked up.
"Why didn't you?"
Victor didn't answer.
Then the hospital alarm suddenly changed.
Not an emergency alarm.
A security alert.
A nurse's voice came through the speakers.
"Security breach detected in the maternity archive."
Everyone turned.
Clara looked confused.
"Why would someone break into the archive?"
Marco's face changed.
"Because they are looking for something."
Dante looked at him.
"What?"
Marco stared toward the hallway.
"The original birth records."
A loud crash echoed from the lower floor.
Then another.
Someone was moving through the hospital.
Someone searching.
Victor looked at Dante.
"They know we found the truth."
Dante tightened his grip on Elena's photograph.
"Let them come."
But Victor didn't look confident.
He looked afraid.
"That's the problem."
Dante stared at him.
"What?"
Victor whispered:
"They're not coming for the records."
A shadow appeared behind the glass door.
Victor stepped back.
"They're coming for the person who knows where your son is."
The door handle slowly turned.
May you like
And someone on the other side whispered:
"Dante... open the door."
