Chapter 10 - The Secret Hidden In The Archive

The door locked behind them.
Dante Valenti turned immediately.
The metal door had no handle on the inside.
No emergency release.
No keypad.
Nothing.
Only a cold wall separating them from the outside world.
Clara stepped back.
"We're trapped."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Dante looked around the archive.
The room was larger than it appeared from the entrance.
Shelves covered every wall.
Old documents.
Medical files.
Photographs.
Records from decades ago.
A hidden history of the Valenti family.
A history someone had spent years trying to erase.
Dante held Elena's note in his hand.
If you found this room, it means the person who betrayed us is already inside.
His eyes moved slowly across the people standing with him.
Marco.
Victor.
Adrian.
Clara.
One of them.
Maybe more.
"Who knew about this room?"
Nobody spoke.
Dante looked at Victor.
"You."
Victor lowered his eyes.
"My father showed me once."
Dante stared.
"Your father?"
Victor nodded.
"He was your father's closest friend."
Dante walked toward the shelves.
"And he never told me."
"No."
"Why?"
Victor hesitated.
"Because your father asked him not to."
Dante stopped.
"My father knew."
"Yes."
"He knew someone would betray the family."
Victor nodded.
"He knew someone would come for the archive."
Dante looked around.
"And he trusted Elena to protect it."
Marco stepped forward.
"Not just Elena."
Dante turned.
Marco pointed toward the crib.
"Your son."
Silence.
The small crib sat in the middle of the room.
A symbol of everything that had been taken.
Everything everyone had fought to hide.
Dante walked toward it.
Inside was the same blanket.
The same one from the photograph.
He touched it.
For a moment, he was not a mafia boss.
Not a man searching for revenge.
Just a father.
"I almost lost him."
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew.
Dante had spent nineteen days believing he had failed.
Believing Elena died because he couldn't protect them.
But now he knew the truth.
Someone had been moving pieces around him.
Someone had planned everything.
Clara quietly spoke.
"Mr. Valenti."
Dante looked at her.
"What?"
She pointed toward the crib.
"There is something underneath."
Dante reached inside.
His fingers touched something hard.
A small wooden box.
Old.
Locked.
He pulled it out.
A symbol was carved on the top.
The Valenti family mark.
Dante looked at Victor.
"Do you know this?"
Victor shook his head.
"No."
Dante opened the box.
Inside was a single flash drive.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Elena.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
She was standing beside a baby.
And beside her was another woman.
A woman Dante had never seen.
Clara looked at the image.
"Who is she?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian stepped closer.
His face changed.
Because he recognized her.
Dante noticed.
"You know her."
Adrian swallowed.
"Yes."
"Who?"
The doctor looked at the photograph.
"Her name was Sophia."
Dante waited.
"Who was Sophia?"
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
"She was the other mother."
The room became silent.
The other mother.
The woman from the night of the explosion.
The second baby.
R-19.
Dante looked at the photograph again.
"So she had a child."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"What happened to him?"
Nobody answered.
Dante's voice became colder.
"What happened to him?"
Adrian finally spoke.
"He was supposed to be the child they took."
Clara frowned.
"Supposed to be?"
Adrian looked at Dante.
"Because someone switched the babies before the explosion."
Dante froze.
The truth became even more impossible.
"You mean..."
Adrian nodded.
"The baby they wanted was not yours."
Dante stared.
"Then why take my son?"
Adrian looked at the flash drive.
"Because they didn't know which child carried the key."
Silence.
The two babies.
The two families.
The switch.
The entire plan.
Someone had been searching blindly.
Marco stepped closer.
"So Elena switched them."
Dante looked at him.
"What?"
Marco pointed at the photograph.
"Look."
Dante looked closer.
On the back of the photograph was handwriting.
Elena's.
Three words.
Protect Sophia's son.
Dante's expression changed.
His wife hadn't just protected their child.
She had protected another baby too.
Clara whispered:
"She saved both children."
Dante closed his eyes.
For nineteen days, he thought Elena's final act was only about him.
About their son.
But Elena had always been different.
She protected people even when she had nothing left.
The flash drive suddenly activated.
A small light appeared.
Everyone turned.
The drive contained a video file.
Dante connected it to the old computer on the desk.
The screen flickered.
Then Elena appeared.
Alive.
Sitting in the same archive.
Looking directly into the camera.
Dante stopped breathing.
"Hello, Dante."
Her voice filled the room.
His hands tightened.
"If you are watching this..."
Elena looked down.
"...then I didn't make it back to you."
Dante looked away.
For one second.
Only one.
Then he forced himself to continue watching.
Elena continued.
"I need you to know something."
She took a breath.
"The baby you have been protecting..."
A pause.
Dante stared.
"Was never the only child in danger."
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A hospital birth record.
Two names.
Two babies.
Two mothers.
Then one line highlighted in red.
TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY: DANTE VALENTI
Everyone froze.
Dante stepped back.
"No."
Clara looked shocked.
"Mr. Valenti..."
Dante stared at the screen.
His own signature.
His own name.
A decision he had never made.
Elena's voice continued.
"Someone will try to make you believe you were responsible."
The video paused.
Then resumed.
"But you weren't."
Dante looked at the screen.
"Someone forged my signature."
Victor whispered.
"Yes."
The video continued.
Elena appeared again.
"Find the person who signed the order."
A pause.
"Because that person is the reason our son disappeared."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then the archive lights suddenly turned off.
Darkness surrounded them.
A sound came from behind the shelves.
A quiet movement.
Someone else was inside the room.
Dante immediately turned.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Then a small voice came from the darkness.
A child's voice.
Soft.
Afraid.
"Daddy..."
Everyone froze.
Dante's heart stopped.
Because he knew that voice couldn't be real.
His son was a newborn.
He couldn't speak.
The voice came again.
"Daddy..."
The lights flickered back on.
May you like
And standing at the end of the archive hallway was a small child holding a hospital bracelet.
A child who looked exactly like Elena.
