Chapter 4 - The Empty Incubator

The alarm continued screaming.
Red lights flashed across the NICU walls.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Dante Valenti reached the empty incubator.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he refused to believe what his eyes were showing him.
The blanket was still there.
The medical wires were still attached.
The monitor was still displaying numbers.
But the baby was gone.
Dante touched the glass.
The same glass he had touched every morning.
The same glass behind which he had watched his son breathe for nineteen days.
Now there was nothing.
Clara rushed forward.
"How is this possible?"
Her voice shook.
A nurse ran into the room.
"The power failure triggered the emergency protocol."
Dante turned.
"Where is my child?"
The nurse froze.
"I... I don't know."
That answer was enough.
Dante stepped back slowly.
His face became unreadable.
Everyone in the room knew what that meant.
The calm was disappearing.
The man behind the calm was waking up.
"Lock the exits."
Nobody moved.
Dante looked at the nurse.
"Now."
The authority in his voice changed the entire room.
Within seconds, hospital security alarms activated.
Doors throughout the NICU area locked automatically.
Clara looked at Dante.
"Mr. Valenti, we need to be careful."
He looked at her.
"Someone took a newborn from a locked medical unit."
His voice was low.
"Careful stopped being an option."
The woman in the dark coat stood near the doorway.
She looked less surprised than everyone else.
Dante noticed.
"You knew this would happen."
She didn't answer.
Dante walked toward her.
"You knew."
The woman looked at the empty incubator.
"I knew they would come."
"Who?"
Her eyes moved toward Adrian.
The doctor looked terrified.
Not because Dante was angry.
Because someone else was coming.
Someone worse.
"Dr. Cole."
Dante turned.
"What is she talking about?"
Adrian didn't respond.
"Doctor."
The man's face was pale.
"I thought the baby would be safe here."
Dante stared at him.
"Safe from who?"
Adrian looked at the empty incubator.
"From the people who wanted him gone."
The words hit harder than any confession.
Clara stepped forward.
"Who are these people?"
Adrian looked at Dante.
"The same people who caused the explosion."
Silence.
Dante felt everything stop.
For nineteen days, he had believed the explosion was an attack against him.
A message from enemies.
A warning.
But he never considered something worse.
That the explosion had never been about him.
It had been about his child.
"Explain."
Adrian swallowed.
"Your wife discovered something before she died."
Dante's eyes sharpened.
"About what?"
"The baby."
The room went quiet.
Clara looked at him.
"What did Elena discover?"
Adrian looked away.
"That someone inside this hospital was changing newborn records."
Dante's hands tightened.
"My wife knew?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Dante immediately recognized the handwriting.
His heart stopped.
Because he had seen that handwriting every morning on notes Elena left around their home.
The handwriting of his wife.
"Where did you get this?"
Adrian looked at the envelope.
"She gave it to me."
Dante froze.
"When?"
"The night she died."
The room became silent again.
Dante took the envelope.
His fingers trembled slightly.
Something he hated.
Dante Valenti never trembled.
Not in front of enemies.
Not in front of death.
But this was Elena.
His wife.
The woman who had left him with a promise.
Protect our baby.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence was written.
Dante, if they tell you our son died, don't believe them.
His breathing changed.
Clara watched him.
Adrian continued.
"Elena knew something was wrong."
Dante looked up.
"What else did she say?"
Adrian stayed silent.
Dante stepped closer.
"What else did my wife say?"
The doctor looked broken.
"She said if anything happened to her, you couldn't trust anyone."
Dante looked around the room.
The doctor.
The nurse.
The stranger.
Everyone.
"She was right."
The words were barely audible.
Then Dante heard something.
A faint sound.
A phone vibration.
Everyone looked around.
It wasn't his.
It wasn't Clara's.
It came from Adrian.
The doctor pulled out his phone.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Dante watched his face change.
"Answer it."
Adrian hesitated.
"Answer it."
The doctor slowly accepted the call.
Nobody spoke.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
"You have failed us, Adrian."
The doctor's face drained of color.
Dante stepped closer.
"Who is that?"
The voice continued.
"The Valenti child should have disappeared nineteen days ago."
Dante's eyes turned cold.
"But now Dante knows."
The call went silent.
Then the voice returned.
"Bring me the real child."
Dante moved instantly.
He grabbed Adrian's phone.
"Who are you?"
For a moment, there was silence.
Then the man laughed softly.
"You still don't understand, do you, Dante?"
Dante's grip tightened.
"The baby you lost..."
The voice paused.
"Was never the baby we took."
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Clara looked confused.
Dante looked at Adrian.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
"The baby in the incubator..."
He stopped.
Dante stepped forward.
"Say it."
Adrian whispered:
"The baby in that room was not the only child who was switched."
Clara covered her mouth.
Dante stared at him.
"There were more?"
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Your son was moved before he was even born."
The words made no sense.
But Dante knew they were important.
"Where is my son?"
Adrian looked toward the dark hallway.
"I know where they took him."
Everyone turned.
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Then tell me."
Adrian opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, the hospital speakers suddenly activated.
A woman's voice echoed through the empty NICU.
"Attention. Unauthorized access detected in the maternity archive."
Clara looked confused.
"The archive?"
Adrian's face changed.
"No."
Dante noticed.
"What?"
The doctor looked at him.
"They found Elena's files."
Dante froze.
"Who found them?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because the answer was already clear.
Someone inside the hospital was moving.
Someone who had been hiding for nineteen days.
The NICU door at the end of the hallway slowly opened.
A nurse stood there.
Holding a file.
Her face was pale.
She looked directly at Dante.
And whispered:
"Mr. Valenti..."
She lifted the folder.
"I found your son's original birth certificate."
Dante stepped forward.
May you like
Then she said the words that made everyone stop breathing.
"But there is another name listed as the father."
