Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Never Died

The man standing at the hospital entrance did not move.
Neither did Dante.
For a few seconds, the entire NICU became silent.
The machines.
The alarms.
The footsteps outside.
Everything disappeared.
Because Dante Valenti knew that face.
He had seen it in old photographs.
He had seen it in his nightmares.
He had buried it eight years ago.
"Marco."
The name escaped his mouth.
The man smiled slightly.
A smile Dante remembered.
The same smile his older brother used before making impossible promises.
The same smile he used before disappearing.
"Dante."
Nobody spoke.
Clara looked between them.
"That's your brother?"
Dante didn't answer.
His eyes stayed locked on Marco.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who was standing in front of him.
Alive.
The woman in the dark coat stepped backward.
She had expected this moment.
But even she looked afraid.
Marco slowly walked forward.
"You're older."
Dante's expression didn't change.
"You're alive."
Marco nodded.
"Yes."
Dante stared at him.
"Eight years."
Silence.
"Eight years and you let me believe you were dead."
Marco looked down.
"I had no choice."
Dante laughed quietly.
A cold laugh.
"No choice?"
He stepped closer.
"You watched me bury an empty coffin."
Marco looked away.
"You watched me lose my family."
"You think I wanted that?"
Dante's eyes hardened.
"I think you wanted something."
The room became tense.
Because Dante was no longer looking at his brother.
He was looking at a suspect.
Someone connected to the worst night of his life.
Marco glanced at the incubator.
Then at the empty space where Dante's son had been.
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
"They took him."
Dante noticed.
"You knew about the baby."
Marco nodded.
"Yes."
Clara stepped forward.
"How?"
Marco looked at her.
Then back at Dante.
"Because I was trying to stop them."
Dante didn't believe him.
"Start from the beginning."
Marco took a breath.
"The night of the explosion wasn't an attack against you."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"I know."
Marco looked surprised.
"You know?"
Dante held up the photograph.
"Elena knew."
Marco looked at it.
His face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"Someone sent it."
Marco's expression darkened.
"Then they want you to know the truth."
Dante stepped forward.
"Finally."
His voice was quiet.
"Someone is going to tell me the truth."
Marco looked around.
At Adrian.
At Clara.
At the woman.
Then he said:
"Not here."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because this hospital is not safe."
A sudden noise came from outside.
A crash.
Then another.
The security alarms stopped.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
Marco immediately reacted.
"Get away from the windows."
Dante noticed.
"You know them."
Marco didn't answer.
That was enough.
Dante grabbed his arm.
"Who are they?"
Marco looked at him.
"The people who killed Elena."
The words froze the room.
Clara covered her mouth.
Adrian lowered his head.
Because he knew.
Dante released Marco slowly.
"You said you were trying to stop them."
"I was."
"Then why did my wife die?"
Marco looked away.
For the first time, Dante saw guilt.
Not fear.
Guilt.
"I was too late."
The answer hurt more than a lie.
Dante turned away.
For years, he had blamed himself.
For years, he had replayed that night.
The explosion.
Elena's face.
Her final words.
Protect our baby.
But now there was another possibility.
Someone else had taken that choice from him.
Someone else had destroyed his family.
Marco reached into his coat.
Dante immediately reacted.
But Marco pulled out a small envelope.
"I found this after the explosion."
Dante recognized the handwriting.
Again.
Elena.
He took it.
Inside was another note.
Short.
Simple.
If Dante finds this, tell him the child was never the target. The person protecting him was.
Dante looked up.
"Who was protecting him?"
Marco didn't answer.
Because the answer was already obvious.
Elena.
But Dante knew there was more.
"She knew."
Marco nodded.
"Elena discovered a network inside the hospital."
Clara looked shocked.
"A network?"
"People changing records. Moving patients. Making certain children disappear."
Dante looked at Adrian.
The doctor looked ashamed.
"I wasn't part of it."
Dante turned.
"Then why did you hide the truth?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Because they threatened my family."
Nobody spoke.
Marco continued.
"The baby switch wasn't random."
Dante looked at him.
"What was the purpose?"
Marco hesitated.
Then said:
"They weren't trying to replace your son."
A pause.
"They were trying to erase him."
The words were worse.
Because replacing a child was cruel.
Erasing one was something else.
Dante looked toward the empty incubator.
"My son."
Marco nodded.
"Your son was born with something they wanted."
"What?"
Marco reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
"This."
Dante looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Proof."
"Of what?"
Marco looked at him.
"Of who ordered Elena's death."
The room went silent.
Dante took the drive.
His fingers tightened around it.
"Who?"
Marco looked directly at him.
"The person you trust the most."
Before Dante could respond, the lights suddenly flickered.
Again.
But this time, nobody panicked.
Everyone knew.
Someone was inside.
Marco looked toward the hallway.
"They found us."
Dante turned.
"Who?"
Marco's face became serious.
"The man who has been controlling everything."
A shadow moved behind the glass door.
Clara stepped back.
Adrian whispered:
"No..."
Dante looked at him.
"You know him."
The doctor didn't answer.
The shadow stopped.
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone prepared.
Dante stood in front of Clara and the others.
The door opened.
A familiar voice spoke from the darkness.
"Dante."
Dante froze.
Because he knew that voice.
It belonged to someone he had trusted his entire life.
Someone who had attended his wedding.
Someone who had held his newborn son.
Someone who had cried beside him after Elena's death.
May you like
The man stepped into the light.
And Dante realized the person standing in front of him was the last person he ever expected to betray him.
