Chapter 3 - The Baby Who Was Never Supposed To Exist

The unknown message remained on Dante Valenti’s phone.
Five words.
Five words that turned nineteen days of certainty into a nightmare.
You have the wrong son.
Dante stared at the screen without blinking.
Clara watched him carefully.
She had seen anger before.
She had seen grief.
But what appeared on Dante’s face now was something different.
A man realizing someone had played with his family.
A man realizing the enemy had not attacked his business.
They had attacked his blood.
"Who sent that?"
Dr. Adrian Cole asked quietly.
Dante slowly raised his eyes.
The doctor immediately looked away.
That small reaction told Dante everything.
"You know something."
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't."
Dante stepped closer.
"Then why are you scared?"
The doctor had no answer.
Because fear was already speaking for him.
Clara looked at the phone in Dante's hand.
"Mr. Valenti..."
Dante didn't respond.
He was looking at the picture attached to the message.
A newborn bracelet.
Different from the one Clara found.
Different from the one inside his hand.
The bracelet in the photo had a name written across it.
Not a number.
Not a hospital code.
A name.
Valenti.
His name.
Dante zoomed in.
The image was blurry.
But one thing was clear.
The bracelet was not nineteen days old.
It looked newer.
Like someone had taken the picture recently.
Someone who had access to it.
Someone who wanted him to see it.
"Where did this come from?" Clara whispered.
Dante typed a response.
No hesitation.
Who are you?
The message showed as delivered.
But no reply came.
The silence became unbearable.
Then Adrian spoke.
"You need to leave the hospital."
Dante looked at him.
"Why?"
The doctor lowered his voice.
"Because if someone sent that message, they know you're asking questions."
Dante looked around the NICU.
At the baby.
At Clara.
At the machines keeping fragile lives alive.
"Someone already knew."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
Dante looked at him.
"They knew before I did."
The doctor went quiet.
Because that was the truth.
Someone had been hiding this secret.
Not for hours.
Not for days.
For nineteen days.
Dante turned to Clara.
"Prepare the DNA test."
She nodded.
"I'll need a sample from the baby and from you."
"Do it."
Clara hesitated.
"Mr. Valenti..."
He looked at her.
"What?"
"If the results confirm..."
She stopped.
She couldn't finish.
Dante finished it for her.
"If he's not my son."
The words hurt.
Even saying them hurt.
He looked at the incubator.
The baby moved slightly.
Dante stepped closer.
"I still protect him."
Clara looked surprised.
Dante placed his hand against the glass.
"Whoever he belongs to."
His voice became softer.
"He didn't choose any of this."
For the first time that night, Clara saw something beyond the dangerous reputation.
She saw the man Elena had loved.
A father.
Not a mafia boss.
A father.
Adrian watched him silently.
Then his phone vibrated.
Again.
His expression changed.
Dante noticed.
"Another call?"
Adrian ignored it.
Dante extended his hand.
"Give me the phone."
The doctor froze.
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Who is calling you?"
Adrian stepped back.
"I can't."
"You can."
"No, Mr. Valenti."
The doctor looked toward the baby.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
Dante's expression hardened.
"Then explain it."
Adrian looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
"When your wife arrived that night..."
He stopped.
Dante waited.
"She wasn't the only emergency patient."
Clara looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
Adrian looked at the floor.
"There was another woman."
The room became silent.
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Who?"
"I don't know her name."
"You expect me to believe that?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I'm telling you what I know."
Dante stepped closer.
"Then tell me everything."
The doctor took a deep breath.
"The explosion caused multiple casualties. Two pregnant women were brought in within minutes of each other."
Clara listened carefully.
"Both women delivered premature babies."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Two babies."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"And one of them was mine."
"Yes."
"And the other?"
Adrian looked away.
"The other baby was listed as deceased."
Dante remembered the bracelet.
R-19.
His voice lowered.
"But?"
Adrian said nothing.
Dante understood.
"But.
That word meant everything.
"But the baby wasn't dead."
Clara whispered.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The silence confirmed it.
Dante felt his chest tighten.
"So there were two babies."
The doctor nodded.
"Yes."
"One survived."
"Yes."
"And someone changed the records."
Adrian looked at him.
"Yes."
Dante turned toward the incubator.
His mind raced.
Two babies.
One explosion.
One missing identity.
One hidden bracelet.
And someone sending him pictures.
"Where is the other child?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Dante's voice became colder.
"Where is the other child?"
"I don't know."
The answer came softly.
But Dante didn't believe him.
Not completely.
Because Adrian Cole was a man who knew too much.
And people who knew too much were usually hiding something.
Clara looked toward the hallway.
"Someone is coming."
Everyone turned.
Footsteps echoed outside.
Slow.
Controlled.
Not a nurse.
Not a doctor.
Someone who walked like they belonged there.
Adrian's face went pale.
Dante noticed.
"You know who that is."
The doctor didn't reply.
The door opened.
A woman stood outside.
She was wearing a long dark coat.
Her eyes immediately found Dante.
Then the incubator.
Then the bracelet in his hand.
She looked like she had been waiting nineteen days for this moment.
Dante stared at her.
"Who are you?"
The woman didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Adrian.
"You failed."
The doctor's face changed.
"I tried to fix it."
The woman stepped inside.
"No."
Her eyes moved to Dante.
"You made it worse."
Dante's hand tightened.
"Start talking."
The woman ignored him.
She looked at the baby.
Then she whispered:
"That child was never supposed to leave the hospital."
Clara covered her mouth.
Dante moved forward.
"What did you say?"
The woman finally looked at him.
And for the first time, Dante saw something he never expected.
Pity.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Valenti."
She reached into her coat.
Dante immediately reacted.
But she wasn't holding a weapon.
She was holding a photograph.
An old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Dante looked down.
His blood turned cold.
Because in the picture was Elena.
His wife.
Alive.
Holding a newborn baby.
And standing beside her was a man Dante recognized immediately.
A man who had died nineteen days ago.
The woman whispered:
"Your wife knew the baby was switched before the explosion."
Dante reached for the photograph.
Then the NICU lights suddenly went out.
May you like
The emergency alarms started screaming.
And when the backup lights turned on, the incubator beside Dante was empty.
