Chapter 9 - The Night The Whole Truth Was Revealed

A man stepped into my mansion holding the same weapon used three years ago:
"Adrian, you spent years searching for the person who destroyed your family."
When Adrian Moretti saw Richard standing in the doorway, he discovered the man had kept Isabella's final confession hidden.
Inside Richard's coat was a photograph from the night of the explosion.
And written on the back was one sentence:
"I didn't act alone."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Richard stood in the middle of my mansion like he owned the place.
Like he had always belonged there.
And maybe that was the most terrifying part.
Because Richard wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't an enemy from another family.
He wasn't someone I had been fighting against for years.
He was someone I trusted.
Someone I invited into my home.
Someone I allowed near my wife.
Near my daughter.
Near me.
I stared at him.
"Richard."
He smiled slightly.
"Adrian."
My hands tightened around the armrests of my wheelchair.
"You were there."
Richard looked around the room.
At the people who finally discovered the truth.
"You found the video."
I couldn't believe his calmness.
"You planted the bomb."
The room became silent.
Lily moved closer to me.
Richard looked at her.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Possession.
Like he was looking at something that belonged to him.
I noticed.
And I hated him for it.
"Don't look at her."
Richard's eyes moved back to me.
"Still protecting her."
"She's my daughter."
He smiled.
"That's what everyone keeps telling you."
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?"
Richard stepped forward.
Michael immediately blocked his path.
"You don't get closer."
Richard looked at Michael.
"You still think you are the hero."
Michael's jaw tightened.
"You disappeared."
Richard smiled.
"And you came back from the dead."
The two men stared at each other.
They knew each other.
Not casually.
Not from business.
They knew each other deeply.
I looked between them.
"Someone explain."
Nobody answered.
My anger exploded.
"I said explain!"
My voice echoed through the mansion.
Everyone stopped.
I looked at Richard.
"I spent three years believing my wife and daughter were dead."
I pointed toward the screen.
"I watched that video."
My voice became lower.
"I watched you destroy my life."
Richard didn't deny it.
"I did what I had to do."
Those words.
Those simple words.
Made something inside me break.
"You had to?"
I laughed.
"You killed Isabella."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
I froze.
"No?"
He looked at me.
"I tried to kill the evidence."
The room went silent.
"Isabella was never the target."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then who was?"
Richard looked at Lily.
My entire body went cold.
"No."
Richard continued.
"Your daughter was the key."
Marco immediately raised his weapon.
"Enough."
Richard didn't even look afraid.
"Do you really think you understand what happened?"
Marco's expression changed.
Richard smiled.
"Ask him."
Everyone looked at Marco.
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
Marco looked away.
No.
Not again.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
"Marco."
He didn't answer.
"Look at me."
Slowly...
He did.
And I saw the pain in his eyes.
"You knew too."
Marco swallowed.
"I knew parts."
I closed my eyes.
For years, I believed Marco was the one person who stayed loyal.
The one person who never lied.
But now?
I didn't know anything anymore.
Richard laughed quietly.
"That's the problem with Adrian."
He looked around.
"He believes loyalty means people tell him everything."
I stared at him.
"You don't know anything about loyalty."
Richard's smile disappeared.
"You really want to know the truth?"
I said nothing.
He continued.
"Your father built everything you have."
I looked at him.
"And?"
"And he also built the system that destroyed your family."
The words hit hard.
"Why?"
Richard walked closer.
"Because your father knew you would never follow him."
I remembered my father.
His expectations.
His anger.
His disappointment.
He always said I was too soft.
Too emotional.
Too attached.
Richard continued.
"He wanted someone stronger."
I looked at Lily.
"He wanted my daughter?"
Richard nodded.
"He wanted an heir who would continue his work."
My hands tightened.
"My daughter is not a replacement."
Richard looked at me.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"She was the future."
I felt anger rising.
"You are insane."
Maybe he was.
Maybe everyone involved was.
But Richard didn't look crazy.
He looked convinced.
That was worse.
Victor stepped forward.
"You don't know what you're saying."
Richard looked at him.
"Don't pretend you are innocent."
Victor stopped.
Richard pointed at him.
"You helped Isabella escape."
Victor stayed silent.
"You knew where she was."
Silence.
I looked at Victor.
"You knew?"
Victor looked broken.
"I was trying to keep her alive."
"By lying to me?"
He didn't answer.
Richard smiled.
"See?"
He looked at me.
"Everyone around you chose what truth you were allowed to know."
I hated that he was right.
But I hated him more.
Richard reached into his coat.
Marco aimed his weapon.
Richard slowly pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
And my heart stopped.
It was Isabella.
The night of the explosion.
But she wasn't alone.
She was standing beside Richard.
And she was holding something.
A document.
I picked up the photo.
On the back was writing.
Not Richard's.
Not mine.
Isabella's.
"I didn't trust anyone except him."
I looked at Richard.
Impossible.
"Why would Isabella trust you?"
Richard's face changed.
For the first time...
Pain.
Real pain.
"Because I was the only one who knew what your father planned."
I stared.
"Then why did you betray her?"
Richard looked down.
"I didn't."
The room became silent.
"What?"
Richard took a breath.
"The explosion happened before I could stop it."
I didn't believe him.
But something about his voice changed.
It wasn't confidence anymore.
It was regret.
"I arrived too late."
He looked at Lily.
"I thought she was dead."
A pause.
"Until Isabella contacted me."
My eyes narrowed.
"She contacted you?"
Richard nodded.
"Three days after the explosion."
My heart stopped.
"She was alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Richard looked toward the upstairs hallway.
Before he could answer, the mansion security system suddenly activated.
The screens turned on.
Every camera showed the same thing.
The basement door.
A place I had never allowed anyone to enter.
The door was opening.
Slowly.
Richard's face turned pale.
"No."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He whispered:
"That's impossible."
The basement camera zoomed closer.
Someone was inside.
Someone who shouldn't have been there.
Then the camera showed a person walking toward the hidden room.
A person carrying Isabella's original wedding ring.
Richard stepped back.
And for the first time, he looked terrified.
May you like
Because the person on the screen...
Was Isabella.
