Chapter 10 - The Family I Fought To Protect

A woman appeared on the basement security camera holding Isabella’s wedding ring:

"Adrian, if you can see this, then they finally showed you the truth."

When Adrian Moretti opened the hidden basement door, he discovered the woman everyone believed was dead.

She was holding a folder containing the final evidence against the people who destroyed his family.

But the first page had a name that made Adrian freeze:

"Adrian Moretti."

Nobody moved.

The entire room stared at the screen.

The woman on the camera stood inside the basement.

Alive.

Real.

Impossible.

For three years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined finding Isabella.

I imagined hearing her voice again.

But I never imagined it would happen like this.

Not surrounded by people who lied to me.

Not with my entire world falling apart around me.

Lily looked at the screen.

Then she whispered:

"Mommy."

That single word broke through everything.

I didn't care about the secrets.

I didn't care about the betrayal.

I didn't care about revenge.

At that moment, all I wanted was my wife.

I turned toward the basement door.

Marco stepped in front of me.

"Adrian."

I looked at him.

"Move."

His expression was serious.

"We don't know what's waiting down there."

I stared at him.

"Neither did Isabella when she disappeared."

He looked away.

Because he knew.

Everyone knew.

They all knew what it felt like to lose her.

But only I knew what it felt like to wake up every day believing my family was gone.

I moved toward the basement.

Richard remained frozen.

He looked at the screen like he was seeing a ghost.

"You said she was dead."

Thomas looked at him.

"You believed what you wanted to believe."

Richard's face changed.

"You knew?"

Thomas didn't answer.

That was all the answer I needed.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

I opened the basement door.

The stairs were dark.

Cold air moved upward.

Lily grabbed my hand.

"I want to see mommy."

I looked at her.

For three years, someone kept them apart.

I wasn't going to do that.

"Stay beside me."

She nodded.

Michael walked behind us.

Victor followed.

Even Thomas came.

Richard stayed at the top of the stairs.

Watching.

Afraid.

The basement was not what I expected.

I thought I would find weapons.

Documents.

Money.

Something connected to my father's operation.

Instead, I found a room.

A hidden room.

A room filled with memories.

Photos.

Baby clothes.

Medical records.

Everything.

Everything Isabella saved.

On one wall were pictures of Lily growing up.

Her first birthday.

Her first steps.

Her first smile.

Moments I missed.

My chest tightened.

I touched one picture.

I should have been there.

I should have seen these moments.

A sound came from the other side of the room.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Then she appeared.

Isabella.

My wife.

The woman I buried.

The woman I mourned.

The woman I never stopped loving.

She stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Three years disappeared.

Then Lily ran.

"Mommy!"

Isabella dropped everything.

She fell to her knees.

And Lily jumped into her arms.

I watched them.

The moment I had dreamed about.

The moment I thought I would never see.

Isabella cried.

Not the fake tears people showed at funerals.

Real tears.

Painful tears.

"I missed you."

Lily held her tightly.

"I missed you too."

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't move.

Because the woman standing in front of me was proof that my entire life had been a lie.

Isabella looked at me.

And her expression changed.

Pain.

Guilt.

Love.

"Adrian."

Hearing my name from her voice almost destroyed me.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

I wanted to know why.

Why she left.

Why she let me suffer.

Why she made me believe she was gone.

But I only managed one sentence.

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to come back."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice cracked.

"You don't understand."

I pointed around the room.

"I buried you."

She looked down.

"I know."

"I talked to your grave."

A tear fell from her face.

"I know."

"I spent three years believing I lost my daughter."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

The pain in her voice almost made me stop.

Almost.

"But I was alone."

She looked at me.

"No, Adrian."

Her voice became soft.

"You weren't."

I froze.

"What?"

She looked toward the room.

"Someone was watching you."

The room became silent.

"Someone was making sure you survived."

I looked around.

"Who?"

Isabella looked at everyone.

Then at Richard.

Her expression changed.

"Richard."

Everyone turned.

Richard stepped forward.

"I didn't betray you."

Isabella looked at him.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You protected me."

The room went silent.

I looked at Richard.

"What?"

Richard looked down.

"I couldn't tell you."

"Why?"

"Because the person behind everything would have killed you."

I stared.

Isabella walked toward the table.

She picked up the folder.

"This is why I disappeared."

She placed it in front of me.

"This contains everything."

I opened it.

The first page was a list of names.

People.

Companies.

Payments.

Then I saw it.

My own name.

At the top.

My heart stopped.

"Why is my name here?"

Isabella looked at me.

"Because they used you."

I continued reading.

My name was attached to accounts.

Documents.

Contracts.

Things I never signed.

Someone had built an entire criminal operation using my identity.

"They wanted you blamed."

"For what?"

"For everything."

She touched the folder.

"If the authorities found this, they would believe you were responsible."

I looked at Richard.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"I found out after the explosion."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

His face became painful.

"Because every person who tried to tell you disappeared."

The room went quiet.

Michael stepped closer.

"There is one thing Isabella still hasn't told you."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Isabella looked away.

And I knew.

There was more.

Of course there was.

"What?"

She took a deep breath.

"The explosion wasn't ordered by your father."

I froze.

"Then who?"

She looked at me.

"The person who destroyed our family..."

A sound interrupted her.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

Not mine.

Not Marco's.

Not Victor's.

A hidden phone inside the basement wall.

Isabella's face changed.

"No."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"That phone should not still be working."

The ringing continued.

Nobody moved.

Then the phone stopped.

A message appeared on the old screen.

One sentence.

From an unknown sender.

"Isabella, you have five minutes before Adrian learns who his real enemy is."

The basement lights flickered.

Then a second message appeared.

This time with a name.

A name Isabella recognized immediately.

She stepped back.

May you like

Because the person who sent it...

Was the one person she thought she had escaped from.
