Chapter 3 - The Man Who Entered My House With A Smile

A man stood outside my office door and smiled through the security camera:
"Adrian, you finally found what was taken from you."
When Adrian Moretti opened the door, he found an old family watch lying on the floor.
The watch belonged to his daughter.
But carved inside the back cover were two words:
"She survived."
I knew the man standing outside my door had been waiting for this moment.
The door opened slowly.
Not because someone forced it.
Not because the lock failed.
Because someone inside my security system allowed it.
That was the part that terrified me the most.
I stared at the monitor.
The man standing outside my office looked calm.
Too calm.
He wasn't hiding.
He wasn't rushing.
He wasn't acting like someone breaking into a mansion owned by one of the most dangerous men in New York.
He looked like he belonged there.
Like he had been invited.
Lily pressed closer to me.
Her small hand wrapped tightly around mine.
"That's him," she whispered again.
I looked down.
"Who is he?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
"I don't know his name."
"Then how do you know him?"
She looked toward the door.
"Because mommy was afraid of him."
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Isabella had never been afraid of anyone.
Not before.
Not when enemies threatened us.
Not when people tried to destroy our family.
She was the strongest person I knew.
But this man had frightened her.
That meant one thing.
He was dangerous.
I looked at Marco.
"Lock down the house."
Marco didn't move.
I noticed immediately.
"Marco."
He looked uncomfortable.
"Sir..."
My voice became colder.
"Are you refusing my order?"
"No."
He looked toward the screen.
Then quietly said:
"You don't understand who that is."
The room went silent.
I turned toward him.
"Then explain."
Marco looked at the floor.
For fifteen years, he had been the man who stood behind me.
The man who took bullets meant for me.
The man I trusted with my life.
But now he couldn't look me in the eyes.
That told me more than words could.
"You knew," I said.
Marco stayed silent.
"You knew something about Isabella."
His jaw tightened.
"I knew there were things she wanted hidden."
My anger rose.
"You watched me bury my wife."
"I know."
"You watched me lose my daughter."
"I know."
"And you said nothing?"
His eyes finally met mine.
"Because Isabella made me promise."
The words hit me.
"Promise what?"
Marco took a breath.
"That if anything happened to her, I would protect Lily."
I looked at the little girl beside me.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The secret necklace.
The hidden photograph.
The warning.
Someone had been protecting Lily.
But not me.
I looked back at Marco.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
"Because she believed someone close to you was responsible."
I froze.
"Someone close to me?"
Marco nodded.
"Someone who knew everything."
The room felt colder.
I looked at the screen again.
The man outside my office was still waiting.
Patiently.
Like he knew we were talking about him.
"Who is he?"
Marco didn't answer immediately.
Then he said a name.
A name I had not heard in three years.
"Victor Hale."
My fingers tightened.
Victor.
My former business partner.
My wife's closest friend before she died.
The man who stood beside me during the funeral.
The man who told me:
"We will find whoever did this."
I remembered his face.
His fake sadness.
His hand on my shoulder.
His words.
I believed him.
Because I had no reason not to.
Until now.
The office door handle moved again.
Marco stepped forward.
"Sir, don't open it."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Victor never comes without a reason."
I almost smiled.
"Neither do I."
I moved my wheelchair toward the door.
Lily grabbed my hand.
"Don't go."
I stopped.
Something about her voice made me listen.
She wasn't acting like a scared child.
She sounded like someone who had seen something terrible.
"What did your mother tell you about him?"
Lily looked down.
"She said he was nice when people were watching."
A chill moved through me.
"And when they weren't?"
She whispered:
"He became someone else."
I looked at the door.
Then I pressed the button to unlock it.
Marco immediately stepped in front of me.
"Sir."
I moved around him.
"No."
"Adrian."
I looked at him.
"Three years ago, I lost my family because I trusted the wrong people."
My voice became quiet.
"I'm not making that mistake again."
The door opened.
Victor Hale stood there.
Exactly as I remembered him.
Perfect suit.
Calm smile.
No fear.
No hesitation.
He looked older.
But not broken.
Not guilty.
He looked like a man who had been waiting for his moment.
"Adrian."
I stared at him.
"Victor."
His eyes moved past me.
Then stopped on Lily.
For the first time...
His smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then he quickly recovered.
"I see you found her."
I felt my entire body tense.
Not because he knew Lily.
Because of how he said it.
Not "a girl."
Not "a child."
Her.
Like she was something he had been searching for.
"You knew."
Victor looked at me.
"Knew what?"
"That she was alive."
The room became silent.
Victor slowly walked inside.
"I knew Isabella was protecting something."
My hands clenched.
"Something?"
I looked at Lily.
"She's not something."
Victor looked uncomfortable.
For the first time, I saw him without his mask.
"You don't understand what happened."
"No."
I moved closer.
"You explain."
Victor looked at Marco.
Then at Lily.
Then back at me.
"You need to hear the truth."
I laughed quietly.
"The truth?"
I pointed toward the photograph.
"My wife was alive."
"My daughter was alive."
"And everyone around me lied."
Victor's expression changed.
"Your wife wasn't the only person hiding things from you."
The words stopped me.
"What does that mean?"
He reached into his jacket.
Marco immediately reached for his weapon.
Victor raised his hands.
"I'm not here to hurt anyone."
He pulled out an envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
With my name written on it.
Adrian Moretti.
My heart started beating faster.
"Where did you get that?"
Victor looked at Lily.
"Your wife gave it to me."
I stared at him.
Impossible.
"She trusted you?"
Victor looked away.
"She trusted me once."
I took the envelope.
My hands shook slightly.
There was a seal on it.
The same symbol from the drawing.
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence.
My breath stopped.
Because the handwriting was Isabella's.
"Adrian, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep our daughter safe."
I couldn't continue.
Lily looked at me.
"Is mommy okay?"
I looked away.
Trying to hide my expression.
Victor spoke quietly.
"She wanted you to know something."
I looked up.
"What?"
He hesitated.
Then said:
"Your wife didn't disappear because of the explosion."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then why?"
Victor looked toward the hallway.
Like he was afraid someone was listening.
"Because she discovered who ordered it."
The room went silent.
I looked at the letter again.
The handwriting continued beneath the first sentence.
I read the next line.
And everything inside me froze.
May you like
"Adrian, the person who tried to kill us was someone who has been sitting beside you since the beginning..."
Before I could read the next words, every phone inside the mansion started ringing at the same time.
