Chapter 5 - The Enemy Sitting At My Dinner Table

A man stepped into my mansion carrying a gun and a photograph:
"Adrian, you need to know what your family was hiding."
When Adrian Moretti recognized the man from the security footage, he found an old wedding ring inside his pocket.
The ring belonged to Isabella.
But engraved inside it was a name Adrian never expected to see:
"Michael Moretti."
And suddenly, I realized the explosion had taken someone else from me too.
The sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
The kind of footsteps belonging to someone who wasn't afraid of what waited at the end.
I looked toward the entrance.
Lily was still holding my hand.
Her fingers were shaking.
That scared me more than anything.
Children were honest.
They didn't understand politics.
They didn't understand betrayal.
They didn't understand the world I lived in.
They only understood fear.
And Lily was afraid of this man.
Marco moved in front of us.
His hand reached toward his weapon.
Victor immediately stepped forward.
"Don't."
I looked at him.
"Don't what?"
Victor's face was tense.
"Don't shoot him."
I stared at him.
"You know him too."
Victor didn't answer.
That was becoming a pattern.
Everyone in my life seemed to know the truth except me.
The mansion door opened completely.
The man stepped inside.
He was older than I remembered.
His hair had more gray.
His face had more scars.
But there was no mistake.
I knew him.
I had seen him in old photographs.
I had heard his name whispered by people who thought I wasn't listening.
Michael Moretti.
My older brother.
The brother everyone told me died fifteen years ago.
I couldn't move.
My mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.
No.
That was impossible.
Michael was dead.
I attended the funeral.
I saw the coffin.
I saw the grave.
I saw the tears.
"You can't be him."
The man looked at me.
His expression was painful.
"That's exactly what they wanted you to believe."
The room became silent.
Lily looked at him.
Then at me.
"Is he family?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know anymore.
Family used to mean something simple.
A wife.
A daughter.
A brother.
A promise.
Now every person connected to me carried a secret.
Michael slowly reached into his jacket.
Marco raised his weapon.
"Stop."
Michael looked at him.
"You still protect him."
Marco's face changed.
"You know me?"
Michael smiled slightly.
"I know everyone who tried to keep Adrian alive."
Then he pulled something out.
Not a weapon.
A photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
And my entire body froze.
It was Isabella.
But not the Isabella I remembered.
This picture was taken after the explosion.
She was alive.
Standing beside Michael.
And holding Lily as a baby.
My hands started shaking.
"Where did you get this?"
Michael looked at me.
"From your wife."
I stared at him.
"Why would Isabella be with you?"
His expression became serious.
"Because she knew someone was trying to kill all of us."
I looked at Victor.
Then Michael.
Then the photograph.
"Explain."
Michael took a deep breath.
"Three years ago, Isabella discovered something inside your company."
"I know."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"You don't."
The room went quiet.
"She discovered that someone wasn't just stealing from you."
He looked directly at me.
"They were building a plan to destroy your entire family."
I gripped the armrest.
"Who?"
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Victor.
And Victor looked away.
That was when I understood.
There was more.
Much more.
"Victor knew."
Michael nodded.
"He did."
I turned toward Victor.
"You knew everything?"
Victor looked at me.
"Not everything."
I laughed quietly.
"That's what everyone says."
Michael stepped closer.
"Victor helped Isabella escape."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then why did she warn me not to trust him?"
Victor looked shocked.
"What?"
I pulled out the note.
The one from Isabella.
"Do not trust Victor Hale."
Victor stared at the paper.
His face changed.
"I never saw this."
Michael looked at him.
"Because she wrote it after she discovered the truth."
My heartbeat increased.
"What truth?"
Michael looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"That Victor wasn't the person who betrayed her."
A pause.
"He was trying to find the person who did."
I didn't know what to believe anymore.
My entire world had become a maze.
Every answer created another question.
I looked at Victor.
"Then who?"
Michael walked toward the dining table.
He placed another item down.
A small black folder.
Inside was a document.
I opened it.
The first page contained company records.
Transfers.
Payments.
Secret accounts.
My name appeared everywhere.
But not as the person receiving money.
As the person being used.
Someone had created an entire operation under my identity.
Someone had made it look like I was responsible.
I looked up.
"Someone wanted to destroy me."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
His eyes became darker.
"Because you were the only person who could stop them."
I looked at Lily.
Then at the photograph.
"Why take my daughter?"
Michael became quiet.
"Because Lily was the only person who could prove Isabella's story."
I frowned.
"How?"
He looked at the necklace around Lily's neck.
"That necklace."
I touched it.
"What about it?"
Michael lowered his voice.
"Your daughter has been carrying evidence for three years."
The room went still.
I looked at Lily.
She didn't understand.
She only knew her necklace belonged to her mother.
Michael continued.
"Isabella hid the final proof inside it."
I carefully opened the necklace compartment again.
The memory card was still there.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But powerful enough to destroy everything.
Marco looked at me.
"Sir, we need to access that somewhere safe."
I nodded.
But before I could move, the mansion security system suddenly activated.
The screens turned on.
Every camera showed the same thing.
The dining room.
The hallway.
The entrance.
Then one screen zoomed in.
A man was standing outside the mansion gate.
Not moving.
Not speaking.
Just waiting.
My security team immediately checked the identification.
Then someone whispered:
"Sir..."
I looked at the monitor.
"What?"
The guard swallowed.
"That man is listed as deceased."
My chest tightened.
I moved closer.
The camera zoomed in.
And I saw his face.
A face I remembered.
A face from the night my family disappeared.
A face from the explosion investigation.
A face I had spent three years trying to forget.
Michael looked at the screen.
And for the first time since he entered the house...
He looked terrified.
"No."
I turned toward him.
"Who is that?"
Michael didn't answer.
Because the man outside slowly raised his hand.
And waved directly at the camera.
Then the security system displayed a message.
One sentence.
Written from inside my own network.
"Adrian, your brother lied to you."
The mansion doors unlocked by themselves.
May you like
And from the hallway behind us...
a woman's voice whispered my name.
