Chapter 7 - The Betrayal That Almost Destroyed Me

A voice came from behind me in the dark hallway:
"Adrian... you were never supposed to find Lily."
When Adrian Moretti turned around, he discovered the person standing there was holding Isabella's wedding ring.
Inside the ring was a hidden message.
But the final words written by Isabella changed everything:
"Your entire life was built on a lie."
I turned slowly.
The room behind me was silent.
Everyone was watching.
Marco.
Victor.
Michael.
Even Lily.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew something had just changed.
The person standing in the hallway wasn't hiding.
He stepped into the light.
And the moment I saw his face, every memory from my childhood came rushing back.
The voice.
The lessons.
The promises.
The name I was taught to respect.
My entire life.
"Thomas."
My voice barely came out.
The man smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A cold one.
The kind of smile that belonged to someone who knew exactly how much damage he had caused.
Thomas Moretti.
My father's closest advisor.
The man who helped raise me after my father died.
The man who told me I was like a son to him.
The man who stood beside me when Isabella's funeral ended.
I stared at him.
"You were dead."
Thomas looked around the room.
"So many people have been dead in your story, Adrian."
His eyes moved toward Lily.
"But some of us were just hiding."
My hands tightened.
"You knew."
Thomas didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The answer was so simple.
So calm.
That it made my anger burn hotter.
"You knew Isabella survived."
He nodded.
"You knew Lily survived."
Another nod.
"You knew I spent three years believing they were gone."
Thomas looked at me.
"I knew."
The room exploded with silence.
I wanted to attack him.
I wanted answers.
I wanted to understand how someone could watch another person destroy themselves and say nothing.
But I couldn't move.
Not because of my wheelchair.
Because of the weight of the truth.
"You were there."
Thomas looked confused.
"What?"
"The funeral."
His expression changed slightly.
"You stood next to me."
I pointed at him.
"You put your hand on my shoulder."
My voice became colder.
"You told me everything would be okay."
Thomas looked away.
"And you believed me."
Those words hurt.
Because he was right.
I did.
I believed him.
I believed every person who told me they cared.
And every one of them had secrets.
Michael stepped forward.
"You don't belong here."
Thomas looked at him.
"Still protecting Adrian?"
Michael's face hardened.
"Still destroying everyone around you?"
Thomas smiled.
"You still think you know the truth."
I looked between them.
"You two know each other."
Neither answered.
That was enough.
I moved closer.
"Everyone talks around me."
My voice became louder.
"Everyone knows pieces of my life except me."
I looked directly at Thomas.
"So now you explain."
Thomas sighed.
Then he walked toward the table.
He placed something down.
An old photograph.
I looked at it.
And my heart stopped.
It showed my father.
Thomas.
Michael.
And a woman I recognized immediately.
My mother.
But she wasn't standing beside my father.
She was standing beside Thomas.
I stared at the picture.
"What is this?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Victor did.
"Adrian..."
I looked at him.
"Don't."
Victor stopped.
Because I wasn't ready for another person to explain my life.
I wanted the truth from the person who had hidden it.
I looked at Thomas.
"My mother."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"What about her?"
Thomas remained silent.
I felt my anger growing.
"Answer me."
His voice became quiet.
"Your mother knew everything."
I froze.
"Everything about what?"
"The explosion."
The room went cold.
"No."
Thomas looked at me.
"Your mother discovered what your father was planning."
I stared.
"My father was dead."
Thomas nodded.
"He was."
"Then how?"
Thomas looked at Lily.
"Because your father wasn't the person controlling the operation."
My mind raced.
"Who was?"
Thomas looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
"Your mother."
I felt like the world stopped.
Impossible.
My mother?
The woman who disappeared from my life when I was young?
The woman everyone said abandoned us?
No.
I refused to believe it.
"You're lying."
Thomas looked almost sad.
"I hoped you would say that."
He reached into his coat.
Then he pulled out Isabella's wedding ring.
My breathing stopped.
"Where did you get that?"
"Isabella gave it to me."
Victor immediately stepped forward.
"Why would she give you anything?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Because she knew I was the only person who could get Adrian the truth."
I looked at the ring.
My hands trembled.
"She trusted you?"
Thomas looked away.
"No."
The answer surprised me.
"Then why?"
"Because she knew I was guilty too."
The room became silent.
"What?"
Thomas looked directly at me.
"I helped hide the truth."
My chest tightened.
"You were involved."
"Yes."
Nobody spoke.
Thomas continued.
"But I was trying to protect Lily."
I looked at my daughter.
Every person had used those words.
Protect.
Save.
Hide.
I was tired of hearing them.
"Everyone says they protected her."
My voice cracked.
"But nobody protected me."
Thomas lowered his eyes.
For the first time, he looked human.
"I know."
I looked at the ring.
"What is inside?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Instead, he opened it.
A tiny piece of paper was hidden inside.
I took it.
The handwriting was Isabella's.
Again.
My wife.
The woman who had been dead.
The woman who had been alive.
The woman who knew everyone had lied.
I read the message.
"Adrian."
Only my name.
Then:
"If you found this, it means the person who betrayed us has finally been exposed."
I looked at Thomas.
Then continued reading.
"But do not trust the first person who appears guilty."
My eyes narrowed.
The message continued.
"The person who destroyed our family was not working alone."
A chill went through me.
There was another sentence.
One that made my hands freeze.
"The person closest to you is still protecting the person who caused the explosion."
I looked around the room.
Everyone became a suspect.
Michael.
Victor.
Thomas.
Marco.
Everyone.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
"Mommy said one more thing."
I turned toward her.
"What?"
She touched her necklace.
"She said if Daddy ever found the truth..."
I moved closer.
"What did she say?"
Lily looked toward the hallway.
Her face became frightened.
"She said the bad person would come back."
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
But this time...
The emergency system didn't activate.
No cameras.
No alarms.
Nothing.
Someone had manually disabled everything.
Marco reached for his weapon.
Michael moved beside Lily.
Victor looked toward the entrance.
And Thomas whispered:
"He found us."
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Slowly.
Everyone looked toward the staircase.
Then a phone on the table turned on by itself.
A new message appeared.
From Isabella.
But Isabella was dead.
The message contained only five words:
"Adrian, don't let him reach Lily."
And above the message was a name.
May you like
The person who sent it.
It was my own name.
