Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden in the Shadows

A little girl pointed at the man near the ballroom entrance and whispered: "That's him... the man Mama was afraid of."

Kenji Takahashi followed her trembling finger and noticed a silver ring on the stranger's hand. But inside the ring was a symbol only one person in his organization had ever used. The symbol belonged to a man who was supposed to be dead.

Kenji's entire body went still.

The stranger standing near the entrance did not look dangerous.

That was what made him dangerous.

He wore a perfectly tailored black suit.

He held a glass of champagne.

He smiled politely at the guests who glanced his way.

But Lily was shaking.

And Kenji trusted fear more than appearances.

"Who is he?" Kenji asked.

The little girl didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the man.

Like she was afraid that even saying his name would bring him closer.

"Lily."

Kenji lowered his voice.

"You saved my life tonight. I need the truth."

The girl looked up at him.

For the first time since she entered the ballroom, she looked like she wanted to cry.

"His name is Akira."

The four men at the table reacted instantly.

Too quickly.

Kenji noticed.

Hiro Sato's fingers tightened around the edge of his chair.

Another man, Daichi Mori, looked toward the exit.

A third one reached slowly inside his jacket.

Kenji's security team moved before he could give an order.

"Hands where I can see them."

The ballroom exploded into panic.

Guests stood up.

Chairs moved across the marble floor.

Women grabbed their handbags.

Men pulled their families away from the table.

But Kenji didn't move.

His eyes stayed on the man by the entrance.

Akira.

A name buried for eight years.

A name connected to betrayal.

A name connected to Emma Nakamura.

The stranger smiled when he saw Kenji looking at him.

Then he slowly raised his champagne glass.

Almost like a greeting.

Kenji hated that smile.

Because it wasn't the smile of someone surprised to be discovered.

It was the smile of someone who expected this moment.

"Boss."

His security chief, Ren Ito, stepped beside him.

"Should we remove him?"

Kenji watched Akira carefully.

"No."

Ren looked confused.

"No?"

"Bring him here."

The security team moved.

But before they reached the entrance, the lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire ballroom went dark.

Screams filled the room.

Someone pushed through the crowd.

A glass shattered.

A woman cried out.

Kenji immediately reached for Lily.

He grabbed her and pulled her behind him.

The little girl pressed against his jacket, terrified.

"Stay behind me."

She nodded.

For several seconds, there was nothing.

No music.

No voices.

Only darkness.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

The ballroom looked different.

Tables were overturned.

Guests were scattered.

And Akira was gone.

Kenji's jaw tightened.

Impossible.

The man had disappeared in less than ten seconds.

But what bothered him more was something else.

The four men who had been sitting at his table were no longer there either.

Ren looked around.

"Boss..."

Kenji didn't answer.

Because he already understood.

The assassination attempt was never about the poison.

The poisoned glass was only a distraction.

The real target was something else.

Someone had planned for chaos.

Someone had planned for everyone to look at the wrong thing.

Kenji looked down at Lily.

The little girl was still holding onto his sleeve.

"Where is your mother?"

The question made her freeze.

"My mom..."

Her voice became smaller.

"She's hiding."

"From who?"

Lily looked around the room.

Then she whispered:

"From him."

Kenji followed her eyes.

She wasn't looking at Akira.

She was looking at the four empty chairs.

One chair had been pushed back.

On the white tablecloth was a small piece of paper.

Kenji walked toward it.

Nobody stopped him.

He picked it up.

Three words were written in black ink.

"She told you."

Kenji stared at the message.

The handwriting.

The shape of the letters.

He knew it.

Because he had seen it hundreds of times before.

Emma.

His hand tightened around the paper.

"Boss?"

Ren stepped closer.

Kenji folded the note.

"Find Emma Nakamura."

Ren hesitated.

"After eight years?"

Kenji looked at him.

"She never betrayed me."

The words surprised even himself.

Because for years, he had forced himself to believe the opposite.

It was easier.

Believing Emma betrayed him meant he didn't have to admit something worse.

That he had abandoned the only person who ever tried to save him.

Lily quietly approached.

"Mr. Takahashi?"

Kenji turned.

She was holding something.

A small envelope.

"When did you get that?"

Lily looked down.

"Before I came here."

Kenji took it carefully.

"Who gave it to you?"

"My mom."

His heart stopped for a moment.

"She knew I would be here?"

Lily nodded.

"She said if something happened, I had to give this to you."

Kenji opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A picture of himself.

Eight years younger.

Standing beside Emma.

And behind them...

A child.

A baby.

Kenji stared.

He didn't understand.

He turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

"Kenji, if you are reading this, it means they finally found us."

His breathing changed.

Because he recognized Emma's handwriting.

He continued reading.

"The truth about what happened eight years ago was never stolen."

A pause.

Then the final line.

"The person who betrayed you was the person you trusted most."

Kenji slowly lowered the photograph.

His mind raced.

Hiro.

Daichi.

The others.

Someone close.

Someone inside.

Someone who had spent years beside him.

Lily watched his expression.

"Mr. Takahashi..."

He looked at her.

"Yes?"

"My mom said you would be angry."

Kenji frowned.

"Why?"

The girl swallowed.

"Because she said you would think I was your enemy."

Those words hit harder than any weapon.

Kenji looked at the child in front of him.

A child who had risked her life for him.

A child whose mother had disappeared because of his own people.

A child who carried secrets she was too young to understand.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I don't think that."

For the first time that night, Lily looked like she believed him.

But the moment disappeared when Ren suddenly rushed back into the ballroom.

His face was pale.

"Boss."

Kenji turned.

"What happened?"

Ren held out a phone.

"We found Emma's location."

Kenji took the phone.

The screen showed a live security image.

A small apartment.

An empty room.

A broken chair.

And on the wall...

A message written in red.

Kenji stared at the screen.

Because beneath the message was a name.

His name.

Then the camera moved slightly.

May you like

Revealing someone standing in the corner of the room...

And Kenji heard a voice through the phone whisper his name.
