Chapter 8 - The Girl Who Disappeared

A little girl's empty chair stood in the middle of a dark security room, and Kenji Takahashi whispered: "Lily..."
When Kenji searched the headquarters, he discovered a hidden camera recording inside his private office. But on the screen was a message written by the person who took her: "Come alone if you want the truth." Kenji realized the enemy was no longer trying to kill him.
They were trying to break him.
The lights flickered.
The emergency system restarted.
For three seconds, the entire headquarters was blind.
Three seconds.
That was all someone needed.
Kenji stood in the lobby, staring at the empty space where Lily had been standing.
A moment ago, she was beside him.
A moment ago, he promised to protect her.
Now she was gone.
"Lock down the building."
His voice cut through the silence.
Ren immediately moved.
"All exits?"
"Everything."
Security teams spread through every corridor.
Doors sealed.
Elevators stopped.
Cameras restarted one by one.
But Kenji already knew.
Whoever took Lily didn't escape.
They wanted him to know they could take her.
They wanted him to feel helpless.
Emma rushed forward.
"Where is she?"
Kenji looked at her.
The fear in her eyes was different from before.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for her daughter.
"I'll find her."
Emma grabbed his arm.
"Kenji."
He stopped.
Her voice broke.
"If they have Lily..."
She couldn't finish.
But he understood.
Because he had seen what happened when powerful people wanted revenge.
They didn't attack the person.
They attacked what that person loved.
Kenji looked toward Hiro.
His expression was cold.
"You knew this would happen."
Hiro shook his head.
"No."
"Someone accessed my security system."
"I know."
"Someone bypassed every protection in this building."
"I know."
Kenji stepped closer.
"Then explain."
Hiro looked away.
And that hesitation told Kenji everything.
"You know who did this."
Silence.
Akira's expression changed.
"Who?"
Hiro didn't answer.
Kenji grabbed his jacket.
"Who took her?"
Hiro looked at him.
"The same person who has been moving every piece on the board."
"Name."
Another pause.
Then Hiro said:
"Masato."
Everyone froze.
Emma whispered:
"No."
Kenji stared.
"That's impossible."
Hiro looked at him.
"Is it?"
The question hurt more than the answer.
Because Kenji had spent the entire night discovering impossible things.
A dead man was alive.
A betrayal was a lie.
His father wasn't his father.
And now...
The man who died years ago might still be controlling everything.
"No."
Kenji stepped back.
"Masato is dead."
Akira spoke quietly.
"We saw the body."
Kenji looked at him.
"You said that."
Akira went silent.
Kenji noticed.
"You never saw him die."
A long pause.
Akira lowered his eyes.
"No."
The truth landed heavily.
For years, everyone had accepted the same story.
A funeral.
A death certificate.
A closed case.
But nobody had questioned it.
Because everyone wanted to believe it.
Kenji turned toward the security screens.
"Find the footage."
Ren nodded.
The team began searching.
Minutes passed.
Nothing.
No camera showed Lily being taken.
No door opened.
No movement.
It was as if she vanished.
Then Ren suddenly stopped.
"Boss."
Everyone turned.
Ren looked pale.
"We found something."
The main screen changed.
A hallway camera.
The one outside Kenji's private office.
The footage played.
Kenji watched himself entering the office.
Then Lily followed.
Then the lights went out.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
But after the power returned...
Someone appeared.
Standing behind Lily.
A figure in a black coat.
The person's face was hidden.
Kenji leaned closer.
"Enhance."
The image became clearer.
Still not enough.
But then the figure turned slightly.
And Kenji saw something.
A ring.
On the person's hand.
The same family ring.
The same symbol.
The same one he had removed earlier.
Emma covered her mouth.
"Impossible."
Kenji looked at her.
"You know it?"
She nodded slowly.
"That ring..."
Her voice trembled.
"It belonged to Masato."
Nobody spoke.
Kenji stared at the screen.
The person who took Lily was wearing his dead father's ring.
But then the video continued.
The figure leaned down toward Lily.
And said something.
The audio was damaged.
Ren repaired it.
Static.
Noise.
Then one sentence became clear.
A voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Tell Kenji I never stopped protecting him."
Kenji froze.
Because he knew that voice.
Even after eight years.
Even after everything.
Masato.
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Emma whispered:
"He's alive."
Kenji looked at her.
"Where would he take her?"
Emma didn't answer.
She looked toward the old family records.
Toward the hidden room.
Toward the secrets that had controlled their lives.
"Somewhere only he knows."
Kenji turned to Akira.
"You spent eight years hiding from him."
Akira nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Akira looked at him.
"Because Masato doesn't kill people."
A pause.
"He makes them disappear."
Kenji's jaw tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Akira didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Eight years ago, when Emma disappeared, she wasn't the only one he took."
The room became silent.
Kenji stared.
"Who else?"
Akira looked at him.
"The person who could prove everything."
"Who?"
Akira opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, every screen in the headquarters turned on.
A live video appeared.
Lily was sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
Unharmed.
But terrified.
Kenji stepped toward the screen.
"Lily."
The little girl looked up.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Mr. Takahashi..."
A man's hand appeared on her shoulder.
Kenji froze.
Then the camera slowly moved upward.
Revealing the person standing behind her.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Masato Takahashi.
The man who raised him.
The man who died.
The man who had been controlling everything.
Masato looked directly into the camera.
And said:
"Kenji, it's time you met your real family."
The screen changed.
Showing another person sitting beside Lily.
May you like
Someone Kenji had never expected to see.
Someone who had been missing for twenty years.
