Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Never Dead

A hidden photograph fell from Kenji Takahashi's hand, and Lily Nakamura whispered: "That's the man my mother told me to run from."

When Kenji returned to his private headquarters, he found an old family record hidden inside the security archives. But one page had been torn out years ago with only three words remaining: "Your brother survived." Kenji finally understood the truth had been buried inside his own home.

The phone stopped ringing.

Nobody spoke.

The photograph remained on the table.

Kenji stared at the image of Akira standing beside Hiro Sato.

Two men.

Two faces from different parts of his past.

One dead.

One trusted.

Both connected to Emma's disappearance.

For eight years, Kenji had believed the enemy came from outside.

A rival family.

A competing organization.

Someone who wanted his empire destroyed.

But now the enemy might have been sitting beside him the entire time.

Lily watched his face carefully.

"Mr. Takahashi..."

Kenji looked at her.

"Yes?"

"Are you angry?"

The question surprised him.

Most people asked if he was dangerous.

If he was going to take revenge.

If someone was going to die.

But this little girl asked if he was angry.

Kenji looked down at the ring in his hand.

The family symbol.

The thing he had trusted more than anyone.

"I don't know."

It was the first honest answer he had given all night.

Ren stepped closer.

"Boss, we need to leave."

Kenji looked toward the window.

The attack proved one thing.

They were not safe.

Someone knew their location.

Someone was watching their every move.

"Take Lily."

The little girl immediately grabbed his sleeve.

"No."

Kenji looked at her.

"You need to be somewhere safe."

"My mom told me not to leave you."

Those words stopped him.

"What did she say?"

Lily looked down.

"She said if you ever found out the truth, you would try to fix everything alone."

Kenji said nothing.

Because Emma knew him too well.

Even after eight years.

Even after everything.

She still knew exactly what he would do.

"She said you always carried things that weren't yours."

Kenji looked away.

For a moment, he remembered Emma standing in his office years ago.

The only person brave enough to tell him when he was wrong.

"You can't save everyone, Kenji."

That was what she always said.

But he never listened.

Not until it was too late.

"Boss."

Ren interrupted.

"We found something."

Kenji turned.

Ren held a tablet.

"The family archives."

On the screen was an old digital record.

A document from twenty years ago.

Kenji walked closer.

The file was titled:

TAKAHASHI FAMILY SUCCESSION RECORDS.

He frowned.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Ren looked uncomfortable.

"Because someone accessed it tonight."

Kenji stared.

"Who?"

Ren hesitated.

"The account belonged to you."

The room became silent.

"My account?"

"Yes."

Kenji took the tablet.

The access time was only thirty minutes earlier.

The same time he was at the gala.

Impossible.

Unless...

Someone had copied his identity.

Or someone knew his private credentials.

Kenji opened the file.

Most of it was normal.

Family history.

Business records.

Names.

Dates.

Then he reached the last page.

A page he had never seen before.

There was a photograph.

A young woman holding a baby.

Emma.

And beside her...

A younger version of Kenji.

But the date was wrong.

The photograph was taken before Kenji had ever met Emma.

He stared.

"No."

Ren looked at him.

"What is it?"

Kenji didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

His entire memory was collapsing.

The story he had lived for years suddenly had missing pieces.

Then Lily walked closer.

She looked at the photograph.

Her face changed.

"That's my mom."

Kenji looked at her.

"You know this picture?"

She nodded slowly.

"She kept it hidden."

"Where?"

"In a box under my bed."

Kenji's eyes narrowed.

"What else was inside?"

Lily thought.

"Another picture."

"Of who?"

She looked at him.

"You."

Kenji froze.

The room became colder.

"Me?"

Lily nodded.

"Mom said you forgot."

Forgot what?

That question stayed in his mind.

Ren continued searching.

Then another file appeared.

Hidden.

Encrypted.

Created eight years ago.

The title was simple.

"FOR KENJI."

Kenji opened it.

Inside was a recorded message.

Emma appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Scared.

But alive.

Kenji stopped breathing.

For the first time in eight years, he saw her face.

"Kenji."

Her voice shook.

"If you are watching this, then I failed."

He moved closer.

The room disappeared.

There was only Emma.

"I tried to tell you the truth."

She looked away.

"But I knew you wouldn't believe me."

A tear moved down her face.

"The person you trust most has been controlling everything."

Kenji clenched his fists.

"Hiro..."

Emma didn't say the name.

Instead, she continued.

"Your family has a secret."

A pause.

"A secret about who you really are."

Kenji stared.

"What?"

The recording continued.

"Eight years ago, when Akira disappeared, I found proof."

Emma looked directly into the camera.

"Akira was never trying to destroy you."

"He was trying to protect you."

Kenji felt his chest tighten.

"From what?"

Emma's eyes filled with fear.

"From the man who raised you."

The screen suddenly flickered.

The recording skipped.

Then Emma's voice became distorted.

"Kenji... if you see this..."

Static.

"Don't trust..."

The video stopped.

Ren tried restarting it.

Nothing.

The file was corrupted.

Kenji stood frozen.

The man who raised him.

Not Hiro.

Not Akira.

Someone older.

Someone who had shaped his entire life.

Someone who had taught him everything.

The room phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Kenji slowly picked it up.

No one spoke.

Then a man's voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Kenji."

His face changed.

Because he knew that voice.

The voice of the person who had buried the truth for twenty years.

His father.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Kenji whispered:

"You're alive."

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

Then the voice answered:

"I was waiting for you to remember me."

May you like

The call ended.

And behind Kenji, the locked office door slowly opened by itself.
