Chapter 11 - The Truth Buried Beneath The Estate

A mansion door opened in the middle of the night, and Kenji Takahashi saw the impossible: "Lily was standing beside Masato."
When Kenji entered the old family estate, he discovered a hidden room beneath the house filled with twenty years of secrets. But on the wall was a single sentence written by his real father: "Protect my son from the person closest to him." Kenji realized the final betrayal was still waiting.
The screen went dark.
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, the only sound inside the headquarters was the ticking of the old wall clock.
Then Kenji grabbed his coat.
"We're going."
No one questioned him.
Not Ren.
Not Akira.
Not Emma.
Because they all understood.
The old Takahashi estate was not just a location.
It was where everything began.
And where everything ended.
The drive lasted forty minutes.
Nobody said anything.
Lily's face kept appearing in Kenji's mind.
The way she trusted him.
The way she looked at him when she needed help.
The way she had stepped between him and death without hesitation.
He had promised to protect her.
And now someone had taken her again.
Kenji looked out the window.
"Ren."
"Yes, boss?"
"Tell me everything you know."
Ren remained silent for a moment.
Then he spoke.
"Twenty years ago, Masato found you after the attack."
Kenji listened.
"Your real father was injured. Your mother disappeared. Everyone believed the family was destroyed."
"But?"
Ren looked down.
"But someone wanted it to look that way."
"Who?"
Ren didn't answer.
That bothered Kenji more than anything.
"You're still protecting someone."
Ren shook his head.
"No."
"Then why hesitate?"
"Because the person who caused everything..."
Ren paused.
"...was someone your father trusted."
Kenji looked at him.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Because it's true."
The car became silent again.
When they arrived, the estate stood exactly as Kenji remembered.
A massive old mansion.
Dark windows.
A place filled with childhood memories.
But now it looked different.
Not like home.
Like a grave.
Security vehicles surrounded the property.
Everyone moved carefully.
Akira looked toward the mansion.
"He brought us here."
Kenji glanced at him.
"Who?"
Akira didn't answer.
Because they all knew.
Masato.
The front gate opened before anyone touched it.
A message.
An invitation.
A trap.
Kenji walked forward.
Emma grabbed his arm.
"Kenji."
He stopped.
"If you see something inside..."
She hesitated.
"What?"
"Remember that everyone lied because they were afraid."
Kenji looked at her.
"I don't know who to believe anymore."
Emma's eyes filled with sadness.
"I know."
That was the first honest answer.
They entered the mansion.
The inside was untouched.
The furniture.
The paintings.
The old family portraits.
Everything remained exactly as it was twenty years ago.
Kenji walked through the hallway.
He stopped at a portrait.
A young boy.
Himself.
Standing beside Masato.
But something was different.
Someone had scratched out another person from the painting.
A woman.
His mother.
Yuna.
Kenji touched the damaged area.
"Someone didn't want her remembered."
Akira looked around.
"Someone didn't want anyone remembered."
They reached the main room.
Nobody was there.
No Masato.
No Lily.
No guards.
Nothing.
Then Kenji noticed something.
A small white ribbon on the floor.
Lily's ribbon.
He picked it up.
His hand tightened.
"She's been here."
Emma closed her eyes.
"She wanted us to find her."
Kenji looked around.
"Or someone wanted us to."
The fireplace suddenly opened.
A hidden passage appeared behind it.
Everyone froze.
Ren whispered:
"The old records room."
Kenji looked at him.
"You knew about this?"
"Only the existence."
"Not what was inside?"
Ren shook his head.
"No one entered."
Kenji stepped into the passage.
The air was cold.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Documents.
Names.
Dates.
A history nobody was supposed to see.
At the end was a large underground room.
The walls were filled with files.
Hundreds of them.
Every person connected to the Takahashi family.
Every secret.
Every disappearance.
Kenji walked toward the center.
There was a desk.
On it was a letter.
His name was written on the envelope.
KENJI.
He opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
His real father's.
"My son."
Kenji stopped.
The first words were enough to break him.
"I don't know if you will ever read this."
He continued.
"If you are here, then Masato failed to keep you away from the truth."
Kenji looked at Akira.
Then continued.
"I trusted Masato because he saved your life."
A pause.
"But I was wrong about one thing."
Kenji turned the page.
"The person who wanted you dead was not my enemy."
His eyes moved faster.
"It was someone who wanted you to inherit everything."
Everyone became silent.
"Someone who believed the only way to control you was to remove everyone you loved."
Kenji looked at Emma.
Then Ren.
Then Akira.
The final line was written darker.
"Do not trust the person who has protected you the longest."
Kenji stopped.
The words hit differently.
Because everyone in his life had protected him.
Masato.
Ren.
Emma.
Akira.
Everyone.
Then a sound came from the corner of the room.
A child's voice.
"Mr. Takahashi?"
Kenji turned.
Lily stood behind a door.
Alive.
Safe.
He immediately moved toward her.
"Lily."
The girl ran into his arms.
For the first time all night, Kenji allowed himself to breathe.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Who brought you here?"
She looked behind her.
Then her face changed.
"Someone I know."
Kenji followed her eyes.
A figure stepped out from the shadows.
Everyone raised their weapons.
The person slowly removed the hood.
Kenji froze.
Because the face was familiar.
Too familiar.
It was someone who had been missing for twenty years.
Someone whose name appeared in every hidden document.
Someone who should never have been alive.
Yuna stepped forward.
But she wasn't looking at Kenji.
She was looking at the person behind Lily.
Her expression changed completely.
"No..."
Kenji stared.
"Mom?"
Yuna whispered the words nobody expected.
"You're the one who started this."
The figure smiled.
May you like
And Kenji finally understood why everyone had been afraid.
Because the person standing in front of him was the last person he ever suspected.
