Chapter 7 - The Man Who Carried The Truth

A security camera showed Hiro Sato entering the headquarters with a woman beside him, and Kenji Takahashi whispered: "Emma..."
When Kenji reached the main hall, he discovered Hiro was not holding a weapon but a damaged photograph of his missing mother. But written behind the photograph was a warning: "Do not trust the man who saved you." Kenji realized someone had been controlling both sides of the war.
The alarm continued screaming.
Red lights flashed across the headquarters.
Everyone moved.
Security teams rushed through the corridors.
Weapons were raised.
Doors locked automatically.
But Kenji stood still.
Because he wasn't looking at Hiro.
He was looking at the woman beside him.
The camera image was blurry.
But he knew that face.
He knew those eyes.
Eight years.
Eight years of believing she was gone.
Eight years of searching for answers.
Eight years of carrying anger toward someone who might have never betrayed him.
"Boss..."
Ren looked at Kenji.
"Are you sure?"
Kenji didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because the person standing beside Hiro Sato was the reason he had spent half his life questioning his own memories.
Emma Nakamura.
Alive.
The woman who disappeared.
The woman who left behind a daughter.
The woman everyone blamed.
Lily saw the screen.
Her entire face changed.
"Mama..."
The single word broke the silence.
Kenji looked at her.
For the first time all night, the little girl forgot to be careful.
She ran toward the monitor.
"She's alive."
Her voice shook.
"She's alive."
Kenji placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Stay here."
Lily looked up.
"But—"
"Stay."
His voice was gentle.
But firm.
Because whatever waited downstairs was dangerous.
And he refused to let another child become a victim of his family's secrets.
Akira stepped closer.
"You can't go to her."
Kenji turned.
"Why?"
Akira looked toward the camera.
"Because Hiro didn't bring her here to return her."
Kenji's eyes narrowed.
"Then why?"
Akira's expression became darker.
"To prove something."
"What?"
Akira looked at the photograph still sitting on the desk.
"That you will always choose the people you love over the truth."
Kenji hated that answer.
Because it sounded exactly like something someone would use against him.
A weakness.
A trap.
But Emma was alive.
And she was right downstairs.
"Open the doors."
Ren looked surprised.
"Boss?"
"You heard me."
Akira stepped forward.
"Kenji."
Kenji looked at him.
"You don't know what you're walking into."
Kenji's expression hardened.
"I've been walking into traps my entire life."
A pause.
"And I'm tired of running."
The main doors opened.
Hiro Sato stood in the center of the lobby.
He looked exactly the same.
Calm.
Controlled.
Perfect.
The kind of person people trusted without question.
Beside him stood Emma.
Her hands were free.
No weapon.
No restraints.
But her expression told Kenji everything.
She wasn't here willingly.
"Kenji."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
The sound hit him harder than any attack.
He stopped.
For a moment, he was no longer the man everyone feared.
He was the young man who once sat beside Emma and believed she was the only person in the world who understood him.
Then Hiro smiled.
"Eight years."
Kenji looked at him.
"You."
Hiro sighed.
"I was hoping we could have a more peaceful reunion."
"Where is the poison?"
The question made everyone tense.
Hiro looked amused.
"Still direct."
"You tried to kill me."
Hiro looked at Emma.
"Did she tell you that?"
Kenji's eyes moved.
Emma looked down.
That small reaction was enough.
Something was wrong.
"Emma."
She didn't answer.
"Look at me."
Slowly, she did.
Her eyes were full of guilt.
Not fear.
Guilt.
"Tell me."
Her lips trembled.
"I couldn't stop them."
Kenji stepped closer.
"Who?"
Emma looked at Hiro.
Then away.
"Everyone."
The answer confused him.
Everyone?
Hiro laughed quietly.
"You still don't understand."
Kenji stared.
"Explain."
Hiro walked toward the center of the room.
"No one person destroyed your life."
He looked around.
"Your entire world was built on a lie."
Kenji's hand tightened.
"You're the one who betrayed me."
Hiro smiled sadly.
"That's what you were taught to believe."
Akira moved forward.
"Don't listen to him."
Hiro looked at Akira.
"Still protecting him?"
The room changed.
Kenji noticed.
The way they looked at each other.
Not like enemies.
Like two people who had known the same secret for years.
"You both knew."
Neither answered.
Kenji's voice became colder.
"You both knew."
Emma closed her eyes.
"Kenji..."
"No."
He looked at all three of them.
"No more secrets."
The lobby became silent.
Finally, Emma spoke.
"When Masato died, I found documents."
Kenji listened.
"Documents proving he wasn't your father."
Kenji's expression didn't change.
"But there was more."
Emma looked at him.
"Masato knew."
A pause.
"He knew who your real parents were."
Kenji felt his chest tighten.
"Who?"
Emma looked toward Akira.
Then toward Hiro.
Then whispered:
"Your father was not killed."
Everyone stopped.
Kenji stared.
"What?"
Emma swallowed.
"He disappeared."
"Why?"
"Because he was trying to protect you."
Kenji shook his head.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Because accepting it meant everything changed again.
"My father died."
Emma stepped closer.
"No, Kenji."
Her voice broke.
"Your father left because he knew someone inside the family wanted you dead."
Kenji looked at Hiro.
Hiro didn't deny it.
That was worse.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Hiro slowly reached into his jacket.
Everyone raised their weapons.
But he only removed a small envelope.
He placed it on the floor.
"For you."
Kenji didn't move.
"What is it?"
Hiro looked at him.
"The reason Masato disappeared."
Kenji stared at the envelope.
"Why give it to me?"
Hiro's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
"Because I made a mistake."
Nobody expected those words.
Hiro Sato admitting a mistake was almost impossible.
"What mistake?"
He looked directly at Kenji.
"I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth."
A silence.
Then he whispered:
"But someone else found you first."
Kenji walked toward the envelope.
He picked it up.
Inside was one piece of paper.
One name.
One location.
And one sentence.
The name made Emma cover her mouth.
Because she knew exactly who it was.
Kenji read it.
His face slowly changed.
The location was not a place.
It was a person.
A person who had been beside him for years.
A person he trusted more than anyone.
Then the headquarters lights suddenly went out.
May you like
Every screen turned black.
And when the emergency lights returned, Lily was gone.
