Chapter 9 - The Husband at the Door

Vanessa wasn't working for Eleanor.
But she had been.
Years earlier.
Before Eleanor's staged death.
Vanessa confessed everything.
Eleanor had paid for law school.
Mentored her.
Placed her beside Daniel.
Vanessa had initially believed Eleanor wanted information about the company.
By the time she understood the extent of the manipulation, she was trapped.
“Why help me now?” Sophia asked.
“Because she told me what would happen after the twins were born.”
“What?”
“You would disappear.”
Sophia went cold.
Vanessa had turned against Eleanor then.
She had spent months collecting evidence.
The hospital-room information hadn't come from Vanessa.
Investigators later discovered a compromised employee database.
Still, trust had been damaged.
Sophia asked Vanessa to leave.
Vanessa did.
No argument.
That night Daniel appeared at Adrian's residence.
Adrian met him outside.
“You don't come here uninvited.”
“I know where my mother is.”
Sophia overheard.
She came downstairs.
“Where?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The old Whitmore estate.”
The house where Daniel had grown up.
Eleanor had returned to the beginning.
Police surrounded the property.
Daniel insisted on going inside.
Sophia thought he was insane.
Then he explained.
“There are records in that house proving everything. She'll burn them if she sees police.”
Adrian joined him.
The rivals entered together.
For twelve years they'd fought over companies, contracts, headlines.
Tonight they walked into a dark house for the same reason.
Sophia and the twins.
Inside, they found Eleanor waiting in Daniel's father's study.
She looked older than her photographs.
Not weaker.
Just emptier.
“You brought him?” she asked Daniel, glancing at Adrian.
“I brought a witness.”
Eleanor smiled.
Then she began talking.
She admitted enough.
The forged messages.
The staged death.
The financial sabotage.
The custody scheme.
But not the medication.
“That wasn't me.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who?”
Eleanor smiled.
“You still haven't figured it out.”
Police entered.
Eleanor was arrested.
As officers led her away, she stopped beside Daniel.
“I destroyed your marriage,” she whispered. “But I didn't make you walk out that door.”
Daniel flinched.
For once, Eleanor had told the truth.
Later that night, investigators searched the estate.
They found records.
Computers.
Passports.
And a hidden surveillance archive.
One video was dated the night Sophia collapsed.
Daniel opened it.
The footage showed someone entering the penthouse kitchen hours before Sophia became ill.
Someone opened Sophia's vitamin container.
Someone replaced the pills.
Daniel enlarged the image.
May you like
The person's face appeared.
And Daniel whispered a name Sophia had never expected...
