Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The pills were tested.

They weren't vitamins.

They contained a medication Sophia had never been prescribed.

Doctors couldn't conclusively say it had caused her emergency, but the discovery transformed the situation from family manipulation into a criminal investigation.

Police became involved.

Michael was found first.

Terrified and hiding in a Queens apartment.

He confessed.

Eleanor had promised to erase his debts.

He had helped forge messages.

He had stolen Sophia's files.

But he swore he hadn't touched the medication.

“I didn't know she wanted Sophia hurt.”

Daniel listened to the recorded confession from across a conference table.

For the first time in his adult life, he seemed to understand that money couldn't repair what had happened.

He visited the hospital daily.

He never entered.

He simply sat outside.

Sophia knew.

She never invited him in.

Adrian continued appearing.

Sometimes with coffee.

Sometimes with legal updates.

Sometimes for no reason he admitted.

One night Sophia found him holding Noah beside the window.

“You're good with him.”

“I'm terrified of him.”

She smiled.

“That's probably why you're good.”

Adrian looked at the sleeping baby.

“My father wasn't.”

Sophia waited.

“He believed children existed to continue a name.”

“Like Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“What do you believe?”

Adrian looked at her.

“That children should never have to earn the right to be loved.”

Sophia's throat tightened.

She looked away.

It was too soon for complicated feelings.

Adrian seemed to understand.

He never crossed the line.

Three days later, police found Eleanor's abandoned townhouse.

Inside was a room covered in photographs.

Daniel.

Sophia.

The twins' ultrasounds.

Adrian.

Timelines.

Financial charts.

A strategy board.

In the center was a photograph of Sophia with one word beneath it.

REMOVE.

Daniel saw it.

Something inside him broke.

He told police everything.

Every hidden account.

Every conversation.

Every suspicious instruction he'd ignored because he'd believed his mother was dead.

Then he surrendered control of Whitmore Holdings temporarily to the board.

Sophia heard the news without comment.

That evening, she received a voicemail from an unknown number.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Elegant.

“Sophia, you've misunderstood everything.”

Sophia stopped breathing.

Eleanor.

“You think Adrian saved you because he cares about you.”

A small laugh.

“He didn't.”

Sophia's hand tightened around the phone.

“He was at your penthouse that night for a reason.”

The message ended with an address.

And one sentence.

“If you want to know why Adrian was really there, ask him what he planned to take from Daniel before he found you on the floor.”

Sophia slowly looked up.

Adrian had just entered the room.

And in his hand was the exact document Eleanor had described...
