Chapter 3 - Two Heartbeats in the Dark

The name was Eleanor Whitmore.

Daniel's mother.

Sophia stared at it.

“That isn't possible.”

Eleanor Whitmore had died three years ago.

Sophia had attended the funeral.

She had watched Daniel stand beside the grave.

Adrian took the document.

“This could be fraudulent.”

Vanessa nodded.

“It is.”

“Then why bring it here?”

“Because Daniel believed it was real.”

Sophia looked up.

“What?”

Vanessa explained that someone had been feeding Daniel documents for months—medical reports, financial records, messages supposedly written by Sophia.

All of them suggested Sophia planned to divorce Daniel after giving birth and take the children overseas.

“I never wrote anything like that.”

“I know.”

“Did Daniel?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“He believed you did.”

Sophia laughed bitterly.

“So instead of asking his wife, he planned to steal our children?”

No one answered.

Grace began crying.

Sophia immediately reached toward the bassinet.

Pain stopped her.

Adrian lifted Grace and placed her carefully against Sophia.

The baby quieted.

Sophia looked down.

Her anger changed shape.

Daniel could break her heart.

He could take houses.

Money.

Reputation.

But not this.

Not her children.

“Who forged the documents?”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“I think I know.”

Before she could say the name, the lights flickered.

Adrian turned.

The monitors continued on backup power.

Then Vanessa's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained.

“What?”

“My office.”

She showed Adrian.

Security footage.

Someone had entered Vanessa's office minutes earlier.

A hooded figure approached her computer.

Then the feed died.

Adrian called his security team.

Sophia watched him transform.

The gentle man holding her daughter disappeared.

The billionaire CEO returned.

Precise.

Cold.

Dangerous.

“Lock every Cross and Whitmore system connected to this case.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't access Whitmore systems.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I can now.”

“How?”

“Because Daniel's board called me tonight.”

Sophia's head snapped up.

“Why?”

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

“Daniel's company is collapsing.”

Sophia felt dizzy.

“What happened?”

“Someone moved four hundred million dollars through shell companies using his authorization.”

Vanessa whispered, “That's impossible.”

“No. It's deliberate.”

Sophia looked between them.

“My marriage and Daniel's company are being destroyed at the same time.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“By the same person?”

“I think so.”

A knock interrupted them.

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”

“Yes?”

“Someone delivered this.”

She handed Sophia a small white envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Sophia and Daniel.

Their wedding day.

Someone had scratched a line across Sophia's face.

On the back were five words.

HE WAS NEVER YOURS.

Sophia's hands trembled.

Vanessa whispered, “I know that handwriting.”

“Whose?”

Vanessa looked up.

But before she could answer, someone knocked again.

Three slow knocks.

Vanessa went completely still.

“That pattern.”

“What about it?”

She backed away from the door.

May you like

“That was Eleanor's knock.”

The handle began to turn...
