Chapter 7 - Adrian's Unfinished Promise

Adrian didn't lie.
That hurt more than Sophia expected.
“Yes,” he said.
“I went to the penthouse to confront Daniel.”
“About what?”
“A merger.”
He handed her the document.
Whitmore Holdings had secretly attempted to destroy Cross Industries through manipulated debt covenants.
Adrian had discovered it.
He intended to threaten Daniel with exposure.
“So you weren't there for me.”
“No.”
Sophia appreciated the truth.
“Then why did you stay?”
Adrian looked toward the twins.
“Because I found you.”
The answer was simple.
No declaration.
No excuse.
Sophia believed him.
He explained that years earlier, his younger sister Claire had died after complications during pregnancy.
She had called him that night.
He had been in a board meeting.
He silenced the phone.
By the time he called back, it was too late.
“I've heard her voicemail once,” Adrian said. “I never listened again.”
Sophia understood.
Saving her hadn't been a business strategy.
It had touched an old wound.
“I'm sorry.”
“So am I.”
Sophia reached for his hand.
Nothing romantic happened.
That made the moment more intimate.
Two damaged people sat quietly beside two sleeping children.
Across town, Daniel was unraveling Eleanor's network.
He discovered she had manipulated him since childhood.
Praise when he obeyed.
Withdrawal when he didn't.
Business success had become the only language through which he understood worth.
None of it excused what he had done to Sophia.
Daniel knew that now.
He stopped asking her forgiveness.
Instead, he began cooperating with prosecutors.
He signed away any attempt to control Sophia's residence.
He established protections for the twins.
He agreed to supervised contact if Sophia ever allowed it.
For the first time, he made choices that didn't benefit him.
Then the DNA results arrived.
Vanessa brought the envelope.
Sophia didn't need it emotionally.
But legally, it mattered.
Probability of Daniel Whitmore's paternity:
99.9998%.
Daniel was their biological father.
Sophia felt strangely numb.
Adrian stood beside her.
“Are you okay?”
“I thought this would feel like victory.”
“It isn't.”
“No.”
It was proof.
Nothing more.
Daniel had abandoned his own children.
That evening he received the result too.
He sat alone in his dark office and cried.
But his grief was interrupted.
A package arrived.
No sender.
Inside was the missing hospital bracelet.
BABY B.
And beneath it was a photograph taken inside Sophia's hospital room that morning.
Someone had been close enough to photograph Grace sleeping.
On the back, Eleanor had written:
May you like
ONE HEIR IS ENOUGH.
At that exact moment, Sophia heard the nursery door open behind her...
