Chapter 5 - The Signature Sophia Never Gave

Beside Eleanor stood Sophia's younger brother, Michael.
Sophia nearly dropped the phone.
“No.”
Michael had disappeared six months earlier after telling the family he needed time away.
He hadn't answered calls.
He hadn't returned emails.
Now he was standing beside the supposedly dead Eleanor Whitmore.
Sophia demanded answers.
They came slowly.
Michael had accumulated enormous gambling debts.
Eleanor had paid them.
In exchange, he had given her access to Sophia's old phones, signatures, passwords, photographs, and private family information.
Vanessa traced several forged documents directly to files Michael had accessed.
Sophia felt physically sick.
Her own brother had helped manufacture the destruction of her marriage.
But why?
The answer emerged inside Eleanor's private correspondence.
Control.
Eleanor had never accepted Sophia.
More importantly, she had never accepted losing control of Daniel.
Her staged death had allowed her to disappear while secretly maintaining influence through trusts, shell corporations, and loyal employees.
The twins changed everything.
Under Daniel's grandfather's trust, the birth of legitimate heirs transferred a significant voting block away from Eleanor's hidden proxies.
Grace and Noah weren't merely grandchildren.
Their existence threatened Eleanor's control of the Whitmore empire.
So she had created doubt about their paternity.
If Daniel rejected them, the trust could be challenged.
Sophia stared at the documents.
“My children were business obstacles to her.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“To Eleanor, everyone is.”
Daniel finally arrived at the hospital that afternoon.
Sophia saw him through the glass.
He looked destroyed.
He wasn't allowed inside.
Sophia had instructed security not to admit him.
Daniel stood there for almost ten minutes.
Then he placed something on the floor.
His wedding ring.
Sophia watched from the bed.
She felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Adrian noticed.
“You don't have to decide anything today.”
“I already decided one thing.”
“What?”
“My children will never grow up believing love means accepting cruelty.”
Adrian nodded.
Then Noah stirred.
Sophia smiled.
For the first time, Adrian saw something hopeful return to her face.
That evening, DNA samples were collected.
Daniel requested the test himself.
Sophia agreed.
Not for Daniel.
For the legal record.
Before midnight, Vanessa discovered another forged signature.
This one wasn't on a custody document.
It was on a life-insurance policy.
Sophia was insured for fifty million dollars.
The beneficiary wasn't Daniel.
It was an offshore trust.
Vanessa traced the trust.
Her face turned white.
“Sophia.”
“What?”
“This policy was activated six weeks ago.”
Adrian took the document.
Then Sophia saw the date.

The same day her prenatal vitamins had mysteriously been replaced.
And suddenly she remembered the pills she'd been taking every morning...
