Chapter 12 - The Night Daniel Lost His Empire

There was a third embryo.

Frozen.

Viable.

Sophia stared at the document.

Daniel had never known.

Neither had she.

Eleanor had secretly requested access to the embryo through forged authorization.

The clinic had caught the discrepancy during its internal investigation.

The embryo remained secure.

For Sophia, the discovery wasn't another threat.

It was another stolen choice.

She instructed the clinic that no action could be taken without her explicit consent.

Daniel signed the same restriction.

“No more decisions behind your back,” he said.

The words were simple.

Months earlier, Sophia might have wanted them desperately.

Now she simply nodded.

Daniel officially resigned from Whitmore Holdings the following morning.

The billionaire who once measured his life by control walked out carrying one cardboard box.

Adrian met him downstairs.

“Enjoying this?” Daniel asked.

“No.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“You've changed.”

“So have you.”

“Too late.”

Adrian didn't disagree.

Daniel appreciated that.

He sold several personal assets and created an independent trust for Grace and Noah that Sophia alone would administer until they were adults.

He didn't use the gesture to buy access.

Sophia learned about it from her lawyer.

That mattered.

Meanwhile, Eleanor's trial approached.

Michael agreed to testify.

Vanessa did too.

Sophia was subpoenaed.

The night before her testimony, she couldn't sleep.

Adrian found her sitting on the kitchen floor at two in the morning eating cereal.

“Elegant.”

“Leave.”

He sat beside her.

She handed him another spoon.

They ate silently.

“I don't want to see Eleanor.”

“You don't have to look at her.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

Sophia considered it.

“Because she spent years making everyone afraid of her.”

“And?”

“I don't want to be afraid anymore.”

The next morning, Sophia entered court.

Eleanor watched her.

Sophia testified for three hours.

No theatrics.

No revenge.

Just facts.

When the prosecutor asked what happened the night Daniel left, Sophia described the pain.

The blood.

Her hand reaching toward her husband.

Daniel lowering his eyes.

Adrian arriving.

The emergency surgery.

Two premature babies fighting to breathe.

Daniel sat in the gallery.

He cried silently.

Eleanor showed no emotion.

Then the prosecutor played Eleanor's recording.

The courtroom changed.

Her own voice connected the forged messages, financial manipulation, staged death, and custody scheme.

The defense collapsed.

Outside court, reporters shouted Sophia's name.

She kept walking.

Adrian waited beside the car.

“You did it.”

“No.”

She looked back at the courthouse.

“I survived it.”

That evening, the jury announced it had reached a verdict far earlier than expected.

Everyone rushed back.

Sophia entered.

Daniel sat behind her.

Eleanor stood.

The foreperson rose.

Before the verdict could be read, Eleanor suddenly turned toward Sophia.

And smiled.

Then she whispered three words that made Daniel leap from his seat:

“Ask Adrian why.”
