Chapter 2 - The Man Who Stayed

Adrian moved before Sophia could speak.
He crossed the room, dropped beside her, and caught her shoulders.
“Sophia.”
She tried to pull away.
“What are you doing here?”
“Saving your life, apparently.”
His voice was controlled, but his eyes weren't.
Adrian Cross was known throughout Manhattan for never looking frightened.
He looked frightened now.
His gaze dropped to the dark stain spreading across the emerald satin.
“I'm calling an ambulance.”
“No hospital.”
He stared at her.
“What?”
“Daniel—”
“I don't care what Daniel wants.”
Sophia blinked.
“He'll destroy you.”
Adrian pulled out his phone.
“He's been trying for twelve years.”
He called emergency services, gave the address, then returned his attention to her.
“Look at me.”
Sophia's breathing had become shallow.
“Where's Daniel?”
Adrian's mouth hardened.
“I passed his car downstairs.”
“He left.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Adrian hesitated.
That hesitation frightened her.
“Adrian.”
“Later.”
Another contraction hit.
Sophia cried out.
Adrian took her hand.
She squeezed hard enough to hurt him.
He didn't pull away.
“I'm scared.”
“I know.”
“What if they're too early?”
“Then doctors help them.”
“What if—”
“No.”
His tone sharpened.
Sophia looked at him.
“We're not finishing that sentence.”
Something about the certainty in his voice steadied her.
The paramedics arrived minutes later.
Sophia remembered fragments.
A stretcher.
Oxygen.
Adrian arguing with someone.
Her blood pressure.
A paramedic saying the words “possible placental abruption.”
Then an elevator ceiling moving above her.
“Adrian?”
“Here.”
He was walking beside the stretcher.
“Don't let them separate me from my babies.”
“I won't.”
“You can't promise that.”
“No.”
He squeezed her hand.
“But I can promise you won't face it alone.”
At the hospital, everything accelerated.
Doctors.
Consent forms.
Monitors.
Two fetal heartbeats.
One strong.
One frighteningly unstable.
Sophia saw the obstetrician's expression.
“What?”
“We need to deliver.”
“Now?”
“Now.”
Sophia searched the room.
“Daniel.”
Nobody answered.
“Call my husband.”
A nurse tried.
Voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
Sophia closed her eyes.
Adrian stood beyond the medical team.
He wasn't family.
He wasn't her husband.
He had no reason to stay.
Yet he stayed.
The emergency C-section began less than twenty minutes later.
Sophia shook violently.
“Adrian.”
He stepped closer.
“I shouldn't be here.”
“Neither should I,” he said softly. “Apparently neither of us got the schedule.”
A weak laugh escaped her.
Then she cried.
Minutes later, a baby's cry pierced the operating room.
Sophia stopped breathing.
“Baby A,” someone announced.
Another minute.
Too long.
“Why isn't the other one crying?”
Doctors moved faster.
“Why isn't my baby crying?”
Adrian couldn't answer.
Then came a second cry.
Smaller.
But alive.
Sophia sobbed.
“Two babies,” Adrian whispered.
She looked at him.
He was crying too.
Hours later, Sophia woke in a private recovery suite.
Two bassinets stood beside her.
Adrian was asleep in a chair.
His jacket was gone.
His sleeves were rolled up.
One of the twins made a tiny sound.
Adrian woke immediately.
He stood, lifted the baby carefully, and looked completely terrified by the bundle in his arms.
Sophia smiled weakly.
“You've negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions.”
“They don't move unexpectedly.”
“That is Noah.”
Adrian looked down.
“Noah.”
“And the other is Grace.”
“Grace and Noah.”
Sophia watched him.
“You remembered.”
“You told me those names three months ago.”
She frowned.
“When?”
“At the Whitmore Foundation gala.”
She remembered.
Daniel had spent the evening on his phone.
Adrian had found Sophia alone near the balcony.
She'd mentioned the names casually.
He had remembered.
The door opened.
Sophia's heart jumped.
Daniel.
But it was Vanessa.
Her face was pale.
She carried the leather folder.
Adrian immediately stepped between her and Sophia.
“Get out.”
Vanessa ignored him.
“Sophia, we have a problem.”
“My husband abandoning me wasn't enough?”
“This is bigger.”
Vanessa put the folder on the bed.
“I called because I discovered what Daniel was about to make you sign.”
Sophia opened it.
Divorce papers.
Property transfers.
A medical authorization.
Then a document she didn't understand.
Adrian read over her shoulder.
His expression changed.
“What?” Sophia asked.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you get this?”
“Daniel's private server.”
“What is it?”
Neither answered.
Sophia's voice hardened.
“What is it?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“A transfer of parental rights.”
Sophia went still.
“To whom?”
Vanessa looked at the twins.
Then at Sophia.
“That's the problem.”
She turned the final page.
A name had been printed beneath Daniel's signature.
Sophia read it once.
Then again.

Her blood ran cold.
Because the person listed to receive custody of her twins was someone who was supposed to have died three years earlier...
