Chapter 7 - The Man Who Sat Beside Him For Years

Adrian Vale turned slowly.

The room became silent.

Every person inside Clara's bedroom looked toward Marcus.

The man who had protected Adrian for years.

The man who knew every secret.

The man who had stood beside him through every war.

Marcus did not move.

But his face changed.

And that was enough.

Adrian had spent his entire life learning how to read people.

A hesitation.

A glance.

A breath taken too quickly.

Those small things revealed more than words.

And Marcus had just revealed everything.

"Marcus."

The security chief looked at him.

"Mr. Vale..."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Tell me that message is wrong."

Marcus said nothing.

That silence was worse than any confession.

Gabriel stepped back.

"You finally see it."

Adrian ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Marcus.

"How long?"

Marcus looked down.

"Adrian..."

"How long have you known?"

The room felt smaller.

Clara watched them with fear.

Selene moved closer to her.

Trying to protect her from a conversation she was too young to understand.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Since before Elena died."

Adrian felt the words hit him.

Not like an attack.

Like a wound reopening.

"Before?"

Marcus nodded.

"I knew there was something wrong."

"And you said nothing."

"I was trying to protect you."

Adrian laughed quietly.

A cold, empty sound.

"Protect me?"

He stepped closer.

"You watched me bury my wife."

Marcus looked away.

"You watched me raise my daughter believing she was broken."

Marcus swallowed.

"I know."

"You watched me spend six years searching for answers."

"I know."

"Then you don't know anything."

The words were quiet.

But they hurt more than anger.

Because Adrian was not yelling.

He was disappointed.

And Marcus knew that was worse.

Gabriel looked at Marcus.

"You promised Elena."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I did."

Adrian turned.

"You knew Elena was alive?"

Another silence.

Marcus answered softly.

"Yes."

Clara gasped.

Her small hands covered her mouth.

Selene looked shocked.

Adrian stared at him.

The world seemed to stop.

"You knew."

Marcus looked at him.

"Yes."

"You knew my wife was alive."

"Yes."

"And you let me believe she was dead."

Marcus's eyes filled with regret.

"Because Elena asked me to."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

He stepped back.

"Don't use her name to justify this."

Marcus looked at Clara.

"She was afraid."

"Of me?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Not exactly."

"Then of who?"

Marcus looked toward Gabriel.

Then back at Adrian.

"Of the person controlling everything."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Who?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Because the answer was not simple.

And Adrian knew it.

"Start from the beginning."

Marcus remained silent.

"Now."

The security chief slowly sat down.

For the first time in years, Marcus looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like a man who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.

"Your father created the Vale empire."

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

"But he also created enemies."

"Everyone knows that."

"No."

Marcus looked at him.

"Not these enemies."

The room stayed quiet.

"Your father had another son."

Gabriel looked away.

Adrian already knew.

But hearing it again made it real.

"Your father hid Gabriel because he believed the family name would be destroyed if anyone knew."

Adrian looked at Gabriel.

"And Elena found out."

Marcus nodded.

"She discovered documents."

"What documents?"

"Documents showing someone inside the family had been moving money, manipulating medical records, and controlling people around you."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Marcus looked down.

"The same person who ordered Clara's treatment changed."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who?"

Marcus looked up.

"The person who was supposed to protect this family."

A pause.

Then:

"Your mother."

Nobody spoke.

Even Gabriel looked surprised.

Adrian froze.

"My mother died ten years ago."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Then explain."

Marcus took a breath.

"She wasn't working alone."

Adrian stared.

"With who?"

Marcus looked at him.

"The doctors."

The answer made everything worse.

The hospital.

The reports.

The lies.

The impossible diagnosis.

All connected.

Adrian turned toward Clara.

His daughter was crying silently.

He immediately softened.

He walked to her.

"I'm sorry."

Clara looked at him.

"For what?"

The question broke something inside him.

For six years, she had believed she was the problem.

She believed her body had failed.

She believed everyone else was stronger than her.

But she had been fighting.

Alone.

"I'm sorry I didn't see it."

Clara shook her head.

"You didn't know."

Adrian held her hand.

"That doesn't mean I shouldn't have."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Selene noticed something.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward Clara's wheelchair.

"The note."

Adrian looked at her.

"What note?"

"The one we found."

Selene walked closer.

"The message hidden inside the wheelchair."

Adrian remembered.

DON'T TRUST DADDY.

But there was something else.

The words on the back.

Your wife knew the truth.

Selene turned the wheelchair around.

She searched beneath the seat.

Then stopped.

Her face changed.

"What?"

She reached inside the hidden compartment.

And pulled out a small recording device.

Adrian stared.

"Where did that come from?"

Selene shook her head.

"I don't know."

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Give it to me."

Adrian stopped him.

"No."

Marcus froze.

Adrian took the device.

The small recorder looked old.

Almost forgotten.

But there was one button.

PLAY.

Adrian pressed it.

Static filled the room.

Then Elena's voice appeared.

"Adrian..."

Everyone became still.

"If you are hearing this, then Clara found someone who believed her."

Adrian looked at Selene.

Elena continued.

"I need you to understand something."

A pause.

Then:

"The person who hurt Clara is not trying to destroy our family."

The recording crackled.

"They are trying to replace it."

Adrian's breathing stopped.

Elena's voice became quieter.

"There is someone pretending to be loyal."

Another pause.

"Someone who has been beside you every day."

Adrian looked around the room.

At Marcus.

At Gabriel.

At everyone.

Then Elena said the final words.

"Adrian... the person you trust most is not Marcus."

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked confused.

Adrian stared at the device.

Because for the first time...

Marcus might not be the traitor.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

"You're looking in the wrong direction."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Who is this?"

The voice laughed softly.

"You really don't remember me?"

A pause.

Then:

"I was there the night Elena died."

Adrian froze.

The voice continued.

"And I was there the night Clara stopped walking."

The call ended.

At that exact moment, the mansion lights came back on.

Every security monitor turned on.

One camera feed appeared automatically.

The hallway outside Adrian's office.

A person was standing there.

Holding a folder.

Waiting.

Adrian looked closer.

Because he recognized the person immediately.

It was someone he had trusted for years.

May you like

Someone who should have been impossible to suspect.

Someone who had just walked into the mansion carrying Elena's missing medical records...
