Chapter 3 - The Doctor Who Lied For Six Years

Adrian Vale stood outside his daughter’s bedroom door and heard a voice he never expected to hear.
A woman was telling Clara: "Your father was never told the truth."
Adrian opened the door.
The woman froze.
Clara froze.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Adrian’s eyes moved from the stranger to the medical file sitting on the bed.
The same file he had seen countless times.
The same file that had destroyed six years of his daughter’s life.
"What is this?" Adrian asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Clara knew that voice.
It was the voice her father used when he was trying not to show anger.
The woman slowly stood.
"Mr. Vale..."
Adrian looked at her.
"You know my name."
The woman swallowed.
"Your wife told me."
The words hit harder than any weapon.
Adrian stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him.
"Everyone who knew Elena is either dead or disappeared."
The woman looked down.
"My name is Vivian Cross."
Adrian studied her.
"Why are you here?"
Vivian glanced at Clara.
"Because Elena asked me to come if something happened."
Clara gripped the blanket.
"Something happened to mommy?"
Nobody answered immediately.
That silence was enough.
Adrian walked toward the bed.
"Clara, look at me."
The little girl slowly raised her eyes.
"Did you know this woman?"
Clara shook her head.
"No."
"Did someone tell you not to tell me something?"
Her small fingers tightened.
Adrian noticed.
A reaction.
A memory.
Fear.
"Clara."
The little girl looked away.
"Mommy said..."
Her voice broke.
Adrian sat down beside her.
"What did mommy say?"
Clara hesitated.
"She said people would get angry if I told the truth."
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
"Who?"
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know."
Vivian looked at Adrian.
"She was too young."
Adrian stood.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"Someone made my daughter afraid for six years."
He looked at Vivian.
"Start talking."
Vivian opened the medical file.
Inside were pages.
Reports.
Notes.
Records.
But Adrian noticed something immediately.
The handwriting was different.
"This isn't from the hospital."
Vivian nodded.
"No."
She pointed at the documents.
"This was hidden from you."
Adrian read the first page.
Patient: Clara Rowan Vale.
Initial assessment after accident.
Then his eyes stopped.
A sentence had been underlined.
Motor function remains intact.
Adrian stared.
His fingers slowly tightened around the paper.
"Explain."
Vivian took a breath.
"Clara's legs were never permanently damaged."
The room went silent.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
"The doctors said—"
"The doctors said what they were paid to say."
Adrian looked up.
The anger in his eyes was immediate.
"Who paid them?"
Vivian didn't answer.
That answer was louder than words.
Adrian turned toward Clara.
His daughter was watching him.
Confused.
Scared.
But hopeful.
And that hurt him more than anything.
Because for six years, she had believed her body had betrayed her.
When the truth was...
Someone had betrayed her.
Adrian walked out of the room.
His security team immediately followed.
"Find Doctor Elias Ward."
Marcus, standing nearby, looked surprised.
"The neurologist?"
"Bring him here."
"Alive?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Very."
Two hours later, Doctor Elias Ward arrived at the Vale mansion.
He looked older than Adrian remembered.
More nervous.
He entered the study.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian sat behind his desk.
The medical files were spread out in front of him.
"Six years."
Doctor Ward said nothing.
"Six years you told me my daughter would never walk."
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
"I followed the medical evidence."
Adrian pushed one file across the desk.
"Did you?"
The doctor looked down.
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But Adrian noticed.
"You recognize that."
"No."
"You are lying."
The doctor looked away.
Adrian leaned forward.
"Who ordered you?"
The doctor stayed silent.
Adrian stood.
"I spent six years watching my daughter disappear inside that chair."
The doctor swallowed.
"I am sorry."
Adrian froze.
Because that wasn't a denial.
It was an admission.
"Who?"
The doctor closed his eyes.
"I can't."
"You can."
"No."
"Then you will tell me anyway."
The doctor looked terrified.
Not of Adrian.
Of someone else.
That was when Adrian understood.
The person behind this was powerful enough to scare a man who had faced him.
"Who are you afraid of?"
The doctor's hands shook.
"I was told if Clara ever showed improvement..."
He stopped.
Adrian waited.
"If Clara ever walked..."
The doctor looked toward the door.
"...they would know."
The room became silent.
Adrian's expression changed.
"They?"
Doctor Ward stood suddenly.
"I shouldn't have come here."
Marcus moved toward him.
But before anyone could stop him, the doctor pulled something from his pocket.
A small phone.
Not his.
An old phone with one saved number.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
Adrian saw it.
Everyone saw it.
WE KNOW YOU TALKED.
Doctor Ward's face turned pale.
Then another message arrived.
THIS TIME, WE TAKE THE GIRL.
Adrian moved instantly.
He grabbed the phone.
"Who sent this?"
The doctor didn't answer.
Because he was staring behind Adrian.
At the window.
Adrian turned.
The window was slightly open.
A cold breeze entered the room.
But nobody had opened it.
Marcus checked the security cameras.
Then stopped.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
Marcus turned the monitor around.
The footage showed the hallway outside Clara's room.
Five minutes earlier.
A figure had entered.
Someone wearing a black coat.
Someone who knew exactly where Clara slept.
And the camera captured the person's face for only one second.
Marcus whispered:
"That's impossible."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Because he recognized the face.
A face he had buried six years ago.
A face that should have never appeared again.
Elena Vale's sister.
The woman who had attended her funeral.
The woman everyone believed had left the country.
The woman Adrian thought was gone forever.
And then Clara's bedroom camera suddenly turned on by itself.

A live image appeared.
Someone was standing beside Clara's bed...
