Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Inside The Wheelchair

Adrian Vale opened the locked drawer beneath his desk and found a photograph he thought had disappeared forever.
It was a picture of his late wife holding Clara’s hand.
But someone had scratched out his face.
And written one word underneath:
"LIAR."
Adrian stared at the photograph for several seconds.
The room around him disappeared.
The expensive furniture.
The city lights outside the window.
The security guards standing outside his office.
None of it mattered.
Because there was only one person in the world who could have known about that photograph.
His wife.
Elena.
And Elena had been dead for six years.
Adrian placed the photograph on the desk.
His fingers tightened.
The same question kept repeating inside his head.
Who had been inside his office?
Nobody entered without permission.
Nobody touched anything in the Vale mansion without consequences.
Yet someone had left him a message.
A message connected to the woman he had buried.
A message connected to the daughter he had failed to understand.
He looked at the paper Selene had given him.
DON'T TRUST DADDY.
The words felt heavier now.
For years, Adrian had believed Clara was suffering because of a tragic accident.
A car crash.
A damaged nervous system.
A child who would never run through the halls again.
That was what every doctor told him.
That was what every specialist confirmed.
But now...
A maid with no medical degree had discovered movement in Clara's legs within minutes.
A maid had noticed something professionals missed.
And someone had convinced his daughter to fear him.
Adrian stood.
He walked toward the window.
The city below belonged to him.
Companies.
Buildings.
People who owed him favors.
People who feared his name.
But none of that helped him understand the little girl sleeping upstairs.
His daughter.
The only person he would destroy the world for.
A knock came at the door.
"Come in."
His security chief, Marcus Hale, entered.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian didn't turn around.
"Find everything about Selene March."
Marcus paused.
"The maid?"
"Everything."
"Background?"
"Everything."
Marcus nodded.
Then he noticed the photograph on the desk.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
Adrian finally looked at him.
"You know this picture?"
Marcus became silent.
That silence told Adrian everything.
"Answer me."
Marcus looked down.
"I thought it was gone."
Adrian walked closer.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said quietly:
"Your wife asked me to hide it."
The room became still.
Adrian's face hardened.
"Why?"
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"She told me if anything happened to her, I was not supposed to give it to you."
A cold feeling moved through Adrian's chest.
"My wife was afraid of me?"
Marcus didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Adrian stepped back.
For six years, he had believed Elena's death was an accident.
A drunk driver.
A simple tragedy.
But now every piece of his life seemed to be changing shape.
"Where is the original?"
Marcus looked at him.
"I don't know."
"You are lying."
"I'm not."
Marcus reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
"I only kept this."
Adrian took it.
The paper was aged.
The handwriting was Elena's.
His heart stopped.
Inside was a single sentence.
"Adrian, if Clara stops walking, don't believe anyone who tells you why."
He read it again.
Then again.
The words were impossible.
Because Elena had written that before the accident.
Before Clara lost the ability to walk.
Before anyone knew anything was wrong.
Adrian looked up.
"Why didn't you give me this?"
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"Because your wife made me promise."
"And you kept that promise for six years?"
Marcus nodded.
"Until tonight."
Adrian looked at the letter.
Something had changed.
The truth was no longer buried.
It was waiting.
Upstairs, Clara woke up.
The mansion was quiet.
She stared at the ceiling.
For years, nighttime had been the hardest part.
Because the dreams always came back.
The hospital.
The voices.
The doctors saying she would never walk.
The woman whispering in her ear.
Don't tell your father.
Clara slowly moved her fingers.
Then her toes.
A small smile appeared.
She could feel them.
She really could.
The door opened.
Clara immediately stopped.
A woman entered.
Not Selene.
Not Adrian.
Someone older.
Someone she recognized.
The woman walked toward the bed.
"Clara."
The little girl pulled the blanket closer.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"I knew your mother."
Clara looked confused.
"My mommy?"
The woman nodded.
"She wanted me to protect you."
Clara's eyes widened.
"From who?"
The woman looked toward the closed door.
Then back at Clara.
"From the person you were told to trust most."
Clara became frightened.
"My daddy?"
The woman didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small medical file.
Clara recognized it.
It was the same folder doctors always carried.
But this one was different.
Because on the front was her name.
CLARA ROWAN VALE.
And underneath it...
A diagnosis she had never seen before.
The woman opened the folder.
"Your father was never told the complete truth."
Clara whispered:
"What truth?"
The woman looked at her.
"The accident never caused your paralysis."
Clara stopped breathing.
Before she could ask another question, footsteps echoed outside.
The woman quickly closed the folder.
Someone was coming.
Clara looked toward the door.
The handle moved.
Slowly.
May you like
The door opened.
And Adrian Vale stood there with the same medical file in his hand...
