Chapter 11 - The Memory He Tried To Forget

Adrian Vale stood frozen inside the laboratory.

The glass door behind him slowly opened.

A warning sound echoed through the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what Victor Hale wanted.

Not Clara.

Not revenge.

A memory.

The truth Adrian had buried.

Victor stood outside the glass chamber, watching him.

"You spent six years searching for answers."

Adrian looked at him.

"And now you're afraid to hear them."

Adrian's fists tightened.

"You don't know me."

Victor smiled.

"I know you better than anyone."

The words felt like poison.

Because they sounded exactly like something Elena would have said.

Victor walked toward the control panel.

"Six years ago, you came here broken."

Adrian stared.

"I came here?"

Victor nodded.

"You were carrying Clara."

The room became silent.

Gabriel looked at Adrian.

Marcus looked away.

Because they already knew something he didn't.

"You remember the accident."

Victor pressed a button.

A new video appeared.

A hospital hallway.

A younger Adrian.

Holding a small Clara.

His clothes covered in blood.

Elena running behind him.

Crying.

The image shook.

Then Victor's voice played.

"You were convinced you failed them."

The video showed Adrian collapsing.

"I couldn't protect her."

The words came from his own mouth.

Adrian stepped back.

Because he remembered that moment.

The pain.

The fear.

The helplessness.

But then the video changed.

Victor appeared.

"You asked me to help you forget."

Adrian stared at the screen.

"No."

Victor continued.

"You believed your memories were destroying you."

The younger Adrian on the video looked exhausted.

Broken.

"Remove it."

Present-day Adrian closed his eyes.

"No..."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Adrian."

But Adrian raised his hand.

He needed to see.

He needed to know.

The video continued.

Victor explained the procedure.

Not as a medical treatment.

As an experiment.

A way to remove specific memories.

A way to separate pain from reality.

But Elena had discovered the truth.

She learned Victor wasn't just removing memories.

He was changing them.

Replacing them.

Creating new versions of events.

Adrian looked at Victor.

"You used me."

Victor smiled.

"No."

He walked closer.

"You volunteered."

The words hurt because they were true.

Adrian remembered.

Not everything.

Fragments.

A room.

A needle.

Elena screaming.

Clara crying.

And himself saying something.

Something he couldn't forget.

"Make me forget."

The laboratory became silent.

Clara watched from the glass room.

"Daddy..."

Adrian turned toward her.

"I'm sorry."

The little girl shook her head.

"I don't understand."

Victor looked at Clara.

"Your father doesn't remember the most important part."

Adrian looked at him.

"What part?"

Victor smiled.

"The reason you wanted to forget."

A screen turned on.

Another video.

This time, Elena.

Alive.

Standing beside Clara.

But there was something different.

She was angry.

Not afraid.

Angry.

"Adrian, listen to me."

Her voice shook.

"You are not the reason Clara was hurt."

Adrian stared.

Elena continued.

"Victor wants you to believe that."

The video changed.

Victor's face appeared.

Then Adrian.

Then Elena.

All in the same room.

Elena was holding a small device.

"The original files."

She looked at Adrian.

"I found them."

Victor moved toward her.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Elena shook her head.

"I understand everything."

The video stopped.

Adrian looked at Victor.

"You were afraid of her."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Your wife was emotional."

"No."

Adrian stepped forward.

"She was smarter than you."

For the first time, Victor looked angry.

A small crack in his control.

"You have no idea what she cost you."

Adrian looked at Clara.

"She saved my daughter."

Victor looked at Clara.

"She ruined my work."

The words exposed him.

Not accidentally.

Completely.

Selene stepped forward.

"You never cared about helping people."

Victor looked at her.

The shy maid who had changed everything.

"You."

He laughed.

"The little maid who thought she could fix what professionals couldn't."

Selene didn't move.

"You underestimated Clara."

Victor stared.

"Everyone did."

The words were quiet.

Because they were true.

Everyone saw a broken child.

Selene saw someone fighting.

Adrian saw someone he failed to understand.

And Victor saw an experiment.

Adrian walked toward the glass chamber.

"Open it."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"Then I'll break it."

Victor smiled.

"You won't."

"Why?"

"Because if you break this glass..."

He looked at Clara.

"The system activates."

Everyone froze.

Marcus stepped forward.

"What system?"

Victor pointed toward the ceiling.

Small red lights appeared.

"The same system Elena discovered."

Adrian looked up.

"What did you do?"

Victor's smile returned.

"Insurance."

The alarms started.

A countdown appeared.

05:00.

"Five minutes."

Adrian looked at Clara.

"What happens?"

Victor looked at him.

"Your daughter loses the one thing Elena fought to protect."

Adrian's face changed.

"Her memory."

Silence.

Victor nodded.

"Everything about her mother."

Clara pressed her hands against the glass.

"No..."

Adrian immediately moved.

"Clara."

"Daddy, I don't want to forget mommy."

The words destroyed him.

Because he knew that pain.

The fear of losing someone.

The fear of losing memories.

The fear of waking up and not knowing the person you loved.

Adrian looked at Victor.

"You will never win."

Victor smiled.

"You already lost once."

The countdown continued.

04:20.

Marcus moved toward the control panel.

"I can stop it."

Victor pressed another button.

The system locked.

Marcus froze.

"How?"

Victor looked at him.

"Because I designed it."

Then Marcus noticed something.

A small hidden compartment beneath the control panel.

Inside was an old device.

A recording.

He picked it up.

"Mr. Vale..."

Adrian turned.

Marcus looked at the device.

"Elena left something here."

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time...

Fear.

Real fear.

"What did you find?"

Marcus pressed play.

Elena's voice filled the room.

"If Victor is still alive, it means he found the backup."

Victor stepped back.

Adrian stared.

Elena continued:

"The backup contains proof of everything."

The lights flickered.

"And it also contains the identity of the person who helped Victor."

Victor looked toward the exit.

Adrian noticed.

"You know who it is."

Victor said nothing.

Marcus looked at the recording.

The final words played.

"Adrian, if you are hearing this..."

A pause.

"Do not trust the person standing closest to you."

Everyone looked around.

The countdown reached 03:00.

Then the laboratory door opened.

Slowly.

A person stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

Adrian's face changed.

May you like

Because the person entering was the last person he expected to see.

And she was holding the original evidence Elena died trying to protect...
