Chapter 9 - The Truth Hidden in My Mother's Voice

A woman pressed play on an old recording and whispered: "Mom... what were you trying to protect me from?" When Alessandra Ferraro opened the forgotten audio file inside the hidden room, she discovered her mother's final confession. But the first words were not a warning: "Matteo saved us." Alessandra realized the man she feared had been carrying her mother's last promise all along.

The voice was old.

Cracked.

But I knew it immediately.

My mother.

After all these years...

I was hearing her again.

My fingers trembled as I held the small recorder.

Nobody moved.

Not Matteo.

Not Carlo.

Not Enzo.

Even Luca stopped playing with the edge of my coat.

Because everyone understood.

This was not just a message.

It was a piece of a person who had been gone from my life for almost my entire memory.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A breath.

A quiet breath.

And my heart broke.

"Alessandra..."

I covered my mouth.

It was her.

"Sweetheart, if you are hearing this, it means I failed to keep you away from this world."

My eyes filled with tears.

I had spent years imagining what my mother would say if she ever came back.

I imagined anger.

Excuses.

Apologies.

But I never imagined fear.

She sounded afraid.

"I know you will have questions."

A pause.

"I know you will hate me."

I closed my eyes.

Because I didn't want to hate her.

I never did.

I only wanted her back.

"I left because staying would have put you in danger."

The recording continued.

"The Bellini family was already falling apart. Gabriel had changed. He was no longer the person I trusted."

Matteo looked down.

His face was unreadable.

But I saw his hands.

They were shaking.

"My daughter..."

My mother's voice became softer.

"Please listen carefully."

I leaned closer.

"There is one person you must not blame."

A pause.

"Matteo Bellini."

My eyes moved toward him.

He looked surprised.

Even though he was the person she was defending.

"Matteo was only a child when this began. He lost his family before he understood what family meant."

The room was silent.

"His father trusted me with a secret."

Another pause.

"And Matteo was the only one who kept that secret safe."

I looked at Matteo.

All the moments came back.

The way he protected Luca.

The way he never forced me.

The way he always waited.

Maybe I had been wrong about him.

But then my mother's voice continued.

"The problem was not Matteo."

My heart stopped.

"The problem was the man wearing the Bellini ring."

Everyone looked at Matteo's hand.

But this time...

Nobody misunderstood.

My mother wasn't talking about him.

She was talking about someone else.

"Gabriel created a plan to control the Bellini family forever. He believed blood was more important than love."

The recording crackled.

"He wanted Luca because Luca carried the final evidence."

I looked at my son.

My heart tightened.

"Evidence of what?"

I whispered.

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

"The truth about what happened the night my daughter was taken."

My blood froze.

My daughter.

Not my life.

Not my family.

My daughter.

Taken.

I looked at Matteo.

He looked just as shocked.

"My sweet Alessandra, you were too young to remember."

My mother's voice broke.

"But you had a sister."

The room disappeared.

I couldn't hear anything.

A sister.

No.

That wasn't possible.

I had been an only child.

Everyone told me that.

Everyone.

I looked at Carlo.

He looked away.

That was enough.

"You were separated because Gabriel wanted to control the Bellini bloodline."

My breathing became uneven.

"He believed one child could be used as a key."

A pause.

"But he didn't know I had hidden the truth."

The recording stopped.

Everyone froze.

Then the voice returned.

Quieter.

Almost a whisper.

"Alessandra, if you found this..."

A long pause.

"Your sister is alive."

The recorder clicked.

The room became silent.

I stared at the device.

Waiting.

For more.

But there was nothing.

No explanation.

No name.

No location.

Just those words.

Your sister is alive.

I don't know how long I stood there.

A minute.

An hour.

Time didn't feel real.

Finally, I looked at Matteo.

"Did you know?"

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

But this time...

I believed him.

Because he looked as lost as I felt.

"Who is she?"

Nobody answered.

Carlo slowly stepped forward.

"I know."

Everyone turned toward him.

My heart raced.

"You know?"

Carlo nodded.

"I helped Isabella hide her."

My anger returned.

"You knew my whole life had another person in it, and you said nothing?"

His face showed regret.

"I was protecting her."

"Who?"

Silence.

Then Carlo said:

"Her name is Sofia."

The name felt strange.

Because it belonged to someone who had always been missing from my life.

My sister.

Sofia.

"Where is she?"

Carlo looked at Matteo.

That worried me.

"Where is she?"

This time, Matteo answered.

"We don't know."

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

"After Isabella disappeared, Sofia was moved."

"By who?"

Matteo looked at the old recorder.

"By someone who wanted to keep her hidden."

I looked at Luca.

Then at the room full of secrets.

Every answer created another question.

My whole life had been built around things I didn't know.

And now...

I had a sister somewhere.

A sister my mother fought to protect.

A sister someone was still hiding.

Suddenly, Luca spoke.

"Mommy."

I looked down.

"What?"

He pointed toward the recorder.

"The lady in the voice."

My heart stopped.

"What about her?"

Luca looked confused.

"She said my name."

Nobody moved.

"What?"

Luca nodded.

"She said Luca."

Matteo immediately looked at him.

"When?"

The little boy pointed at the recorder.

"Before she said goodbye."

My skin went cold.

Because the recording had been made before Luca was born.

Unless...

Unless my mother had recorded another message.

One we hadn't found.

Matteo turned toward the hidden room.

"Search everything."

Everyone moved.

Drawers opened.

Boxes were lifted.

Documents scattered across the table.

Then Enzo found something.

"Boss."

Matteo turned.

Enzo was holding a small envelope hidden beneath the floorboard.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Alessandra.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A young woman standing outside a hospital.

Holding a baby.

I stared.

Because I knew the woman.

My mother.

But the baby...

Was not Luca.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from twenty-five years ago.

And beneath it...

A sentence written in my mother's handwriting.

"Your sister is not the only child I saved."

I looked up.

Because at that exact moment...

someone knocked on the apartment door.

Three slow knocks.

Then a woman's voice came from outside.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow...

I knew it belonged to someone I had been searching for my entire life.

"Alessandra..."

A pause.

"Open the door."

My hand reached for the lock.

May you like

And the woman outside whispered the name I had never expected to hear.

"Little sister."
