Chapter 7 - The Room My Mother Never Opened

A mother unlocked an abandoned apartment door and whispered: "Mom... why did you leave this for me?" When Alessandra Ferraro entered the hidden room behind the old bedroom wall, she discovered a forgotten box covered in dust. But inside the box was one photograph with a single sentence written behind it: "Matteo was never the enemy." Alessandra realized the person she trusted least might have been the only one protecting her.

I stared at the message on Matteo’s phone.

Come alone, Alessandra.

Three words.

Written by my mother.

The woman who disappeared when I was a child.

The woman who left me with questions that followed me my entire life.

I touched the screen.

My fingers felt cold.

"She knew."

Matteo looked at me.

"What?"

I swallowed.

"She knew this day would come."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood what I was saying.

My mother hadn't just disappeared.

She had planned something.

She had hidden pieces of the truth.

And somehow...

I was the final piece.

"I have to go."

Matteo immediately shook his head.

"No."

The answer was instant.

Too instant.

I looked at him.

"You don't get to decide that."

"Yes, I do."

My eyes narrowed.

"Excuse me?"

His expression softened slightly.

"Because someone tried to kill you tonight."

"And someone has been controlling my entire life."

The words hit him.

I saw it.

A small reaction.

Pain.

Because he knew I was right.

"I need answers."

"You won't get them by walking into a trap."

I looked at the photograph of my mother's message.

"Maybe it isn't a trap."

Matteo stared at me.

"Alessandra."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You keep telling me everyone is dangerous. You keep telling me there are secrets. You keep telling me I need protection."

I stepped closer.

"But nobody has asked what I want."

Silence.

Even Enzo looked away.

Because maybe they were used to people obeying Matteo.

Not challenging him.

Matteo looked at Luca.

Then back at me.

"What do you want?"

The question surprised me.

Because I expected an argument.

Not permission.

"I want the truth."

A long pause.

Then Matteo nodded.

"Then we go together."

"No."

His expression hardened.

"Absolutely not."

"I said I go."

"You don't understand what you're walking into."

I looked at him.

"Neither do you."

That stopped him.

Because it was true.

For twenty-eight years, everyone had been searching for answers.

And now the person who had hidden them was calling me.

Not him.

Me.

Matteo looked at Enzo.

"Prepare the car."

Enzo nodded.

I expected him to argue.

He didn't.

Maybe because he knew Matteo had already made his decision.

Or maybe because he knew something I didn't.

Before we left, Matteo crouched beside Luca.

My son watched him quietly.

"You stay close to your mother."

Luca nodded.

Then he looked at Matteo's injured hand.

"Your boo-boo is still there."

For the first time all night, Matteo almost smiled.

"Yes."

Luca reached into his small pocket.

Then pulled out a tiny toy bandage.

I stared.

I didn't even know he had it.

He placed it carefully on Matteo's hand.

"There."

Nobody spoke.

The room became strangely quiet.

Because the most dangerous man in Manhattan was standing there...

Wearing a toy bandage from a three-year-old boy.

And somehow...

He looked like someone who had forgotten what kindness felt like.

"Thank you," Matteo said.

Luca nodded seriously.

"Now you're better."

Matteo looked away quickly.

But I saw it.

The emotion he tried to hide.

The car ride to my apartment was silent.

The city outside the window moved like nothing had changed.

People walked.

Cars passed.

Lights filled the streets.

Nobody knew that my entire life was falling apart inside a black vehicle.

Luca slept beside me.

His head resting against my arm.

Matteo sat across from us.

Watching the streets.

Watching everything.

Like danger could appear from anywhere.

"Why did you help me?"

I asked.

He didn't look at me.

"Because you needed help."

"That's not the truth."

A pause.

"No."

He looked out the window.

"It isn't."

I waited.

But he didn't continue.

"Then tell me."

His eyes met mine.

"Because your mother once saved my life."

I froze.

"What?"

"Isabella."

My mother's name again.

"She saved me when I was a child."

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know if I could trust you."

The honesty surprised me.

"And now?"

He looked at Luca.

"Now I know."

I wanted to ask more.

But the car stopped.

We had arrived.

My apartment building looked exactly the same.

And somehow...

That made it worse.

Because everything familiar suddenly felt dangerous.

The hallway was empty.

Too empty.

Matteo noticed immediately.

"Stay behind me."

I almost argued.

But then I saw his face.

He wasn't ordering me.

He was afraid.

For me.

For Luca.

We reached my door.

The lock was broken.

The same door where I had spent countless nights trying to build a normal life.

Now it looked like a warning.

Matteo signaled his men.

They checked inside.

A few seconds later:

"Clear."

We entered.

Nothing was stolen.

Nothing was destroyed.

That was the strange part.

Everything was exactly where I left it.

Except one thing.

The bedroom wall.

A section of wallpaper had been removed.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

I stared.

"I don't know that was there."

Matteo looked at it.

Neither did he.

Slowly, he touched the handle.

It opened easily.

Inside was a small hidden room.

A room my mother had built and kept secret.

There were boxes.

Documents.

Old photographs.

And one chair.

Like someone had been waiting.

I walked inside.

My heart was beating faster with every step.

On the table was another letter.

My name was written on it.

Alessandra.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

I opened it.

The handwriting was my mother's.

My eyes filled with tears.

My dear Alessandra,

If you are reading this, it means they found you.

I stopped.

They.

Not him.

Not Matteo.

They.

I continued.

I know you will hate me for leaving.

I know you will think I abandoned you.

But I had no choice.

Because the person hunting you was someone you trusted.

My breathing stopped.

Someone you trusted.

I looked at Matteo.

He was reading my face.

"What does it say?"

I couldn't answer.

I kept reading.

The next line was shorter.

And it changed everything.

Do not trust the man who wears the Bellini ring.

I looked down.

My eyes moved to Matteo's hand.

The ring.

The Bellini family ring.

The same one he always wore.

My blood ran cold.

Because behind me...

Someone inside the hidden room whispered:

"She's right."

I turned around.

May you like

A man stepped out from the darkness.

And he was wearing the same Bellini ring.
