Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The little boy pointed at the hidden phone and whispered: "Mommy... that sound came from there." When Matteo Bellini opened the encrypted message, he found an old family photograph attached to the screen. But one face had been circled in black ink: "Alessandra." Matteo realized someone had been watching them before they ever entered the restaurant.

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But sometimes a few seconds were enough to change everything.

I held Luca tightly against my chest.

The restaurant that had felt warm and safe moments ago suddenly felt like a trap.

I could hear footsteps moving around us.

People whispering.

Weapons being pulled.

And in the middle of all that chaos stood Matteo Bellini, staring at the phone in his hand.

His face had changed.

Not the cold expression I had seen when I first walked inside.

Not the controlled expression of a man who seemed to have power over everyone in the room.

This was different.

This was fear.

Small.

Hidden.

But real.

"What did they send you?" Enzo asked.

Matteo didn't answer.

"Matteo."

Still nothing.

I watched him closely.

The message had only been four words.

She knows about Luca.

But somehow, those words had destroyed the calm in the room.

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

Matteo looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell me everything.

Then he looked away.

"Nothing."

I almost laughed.

Nothing?

After everything that had happened?

A stranger knew my name.

A necklace connected me to a family I barely remembered.

A photograph appeared.

And now someone knew about my son.

"Don't lie to me."

The words came out before I could stop them.

Everyone looked surprised.

Maybe because nobody spoke to Matteo Bellini that way.

But I was tired.

I was tired of people deciding what I deserved to know.

I was tired of running.

I was tired of protecting Luca from shadows I couldn't see.

"My entire life, people have been hiding things from me," I said quietly. "I'm not letting you do the same."

Matteo studied me.

Then he looked at Luca.

The anger in his eyes softened.

"You're right."

The answer surprised me.

He handed the phone to Enzo.

"Show her."

Enzo hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He turned the screen toward me.

At first, I only saw a photograph.

An old photograph.

A woman standing beside a young man.

The image was faded.

But I knew the woman immediately.

My mother.

Isabella Ferraro.

My breathing stopped.

"Where did you get this?"

Enzo looked at Matteo.

Matteo answered.

"From my father."

I looked at him.

"Your father knew my mother?"

A long silence followed.

Then Matteo said:

"They weren't enemies."

I waited.

"But they weren't friends either."

My fingers tightened around Luca's blanket.

"What were they?"

Matteo looked at the photograph.

"They were two people who trusted each other with a secret that got them both killed."

My stomach dropped.

"My mother isn't dead."

The words came out automatically.

Because that was the story I had always told myself.

She disappeared.

She left.

She would come back.

Dead was too final.

Matteo didn't correct me.

That scared me.

"What are you not telling me?"

Before he could answer, one of the guards rushed toward us.

"Boss."

Matteo turned.

"What?"

"We found something outside."

The guard looked at me.

Then lowered his voice.

"There was a car parked across the street."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"How long?"

"Since before she entered."

The restaurant became silent.

Someone had been waiting.

Watching.

Following.

My hands began shaking.

Matteo noticed.

His voice became quieter.

"Alessandra."

I looked at him.

"When was the last time you saw anyone suspicious?"

I wanted to say no one.

I wanted to pretend everything was fine.

But then I remembered.

The man outside my apartment.

The stranger at the subway station who kept looking at Luca.

The envelope left under my door.

"I don't know."

Matteo stepped closer.

"What did they do?"

I looked down.

"I received letters."

Enzo immediately reacted.

"Letters?"

I nodded.

"Three."

"Where are they?"

"I threw them away."

Matteo's expression changed.

"Why?"

Because I was scared.

Because I didn't want to believe them.

Because every letter said the same thing.

Give us the boy.

But I didn't say that.

I couldn't.

Not yet.

Matteo noticed my silence.

"Alessandra."

I looked at him.

"What did the letters say?"

My lips parted.

But before I answered...

Luca moved in my arms.

His sleepy eyes opened.

"Mommy..."

I looked down.

"I'm here."

He looked around.

Then whispered something that made my blood freeze.

"The bad man came again."

Nobody moved.

"What bad man?" I asked.

Luca looked at the door.

"The one who took my picture."

The room went completely silent.

Matteo slowly turned toward me.

"Someone photographed him?"

I couldn't speak.

Because now I remembered.

Two weeks ago.

A man outside the grocery store.

I thought he was taking a picture of the building.

I thought I was imagining things.

I thought I was just tired.

I was wrong.

Matteo looked at his guards.

"Find him."

They moved instantly.

Then Matteo looked at me.

"You and Luca are leaving with me."

I shook my head.

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"You don't understand."

"No."

I stood taller.

"I understand enough."

The room became quiet again.

"I don't know you. I don't know your family. I don't know why my mother's necklace was in your hands."

I looked at Luca.

"But I know one thing."

I faced him.

"My son is not a weapon."

Something changed in Matteo's expression.

A painful reaction.

Like my words had touched something buried deep.

"He isn't."

"Then tell me the truth."

He was silent.

Finally, he said:

"Your son isn't the reason they are coming."

I waited.

"They are coming because of what he carries."

My face went pale.

"What does that mean?"

Matteo looked at Luca.

Then at the necklace.

"Your mother didn't leave you a necklace."

He picked it up carefully.

"She left you a key."

My heart stopped.

"A key?"

Matteo turned the necklace over.

The silver piece opened.

Something inside had been hidden.

A tiny folded piece of paper.

Old.

Yellowed.

Protected for years.

My hands started trembling.

"You knew?"

Matteo shook his head.

"No."

Then why did he look terrified?

Because the paper wasn't empty.

There was writing inside.

Three words.

Three words that made Matteo take a step back.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

The handwriting of a woman who was supposed to be dead.

Isabella Ferraro.

The message said:

"Protect my grandson."

I stared at the paper.

My grandson.

Not my son.

Someone else's grandson.

Matteo's eyes moved from the note to Luca.

Then slowly...

to me.

"Alessandra."

His voice was barely a whisper.

"There is something you don't know about Luca."

I felt my entire body go cold.

Before I could ask what he meant...

May you like

The restaurant windows shattered.

And a bullet hit the table exactly where the necklace had been sitting.
