Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Locked Door

A little boy pointed at the stranger outside and whispered: "Mommy... that's the man from my dreams." When Matteo Bellini opened the private room door, he discovered an old family ring left on the floor. But inside the ring was a hidden message: "Your brother survived." Matteo realized the enemy standing outside was connected to the secret buried for twenty-eight years.
I couldn't move.
Not because I was afraid of the man outside.
Because Luca was.
My son wasn't the kind of child who scared easily.
He wasn't afraid of strangers.
He wasn't afraid of loud noises.
He wasn't afraid of the dark.
But the moment he saw that man...
His little hands grabbed my coat.
His entire body started shaking.
"Mommy."
I lowered myself beside him.
"I'm here."
His eyes never left the glass door.
"Don't let him take me."
Those words broke something inside me.
Because I had spent three years protecting Luca from everything.
From hunger.
From loneliness.
From people who only saw us as a problem.
But I never imagined I had to protect him from something he remembered.
Something I didn't.
Matteo stood between us and the door.
His expression was no longer controlled.
It was rage.
Pure and silent.
"Who is he?"
I asked.
Nobody answered.
Matteo looked at Enzo.
"Lock the room."
Enzo moved immediately.
The door clicked shut.
The man outside didn't react.
He just stood there.
Watching.
Like he knew exactly what was happening inside.
That scared me more.
"He knows we're here," I whispered.
Matteo looked at me.
"Yes."
"Then why isn't he leaving?"
His jaw tightened.
"Because he wants us to see him."
The lights flickered again.
The screens on the wall went black.
The security cameras disappeared.
Enzo cursed under his breath.
"He cut the system."
Matteo didn't look surprised.
"Of course he did."
I looked at him.
"You know him."
A pause.
Then:
"Yes."
The answer came too quickly.
"Who is he?"
Matteo stared at the locked door.
"My brother."
The room went silent.
I felt like I had forgotten how to breathe.
"Your brother?"
Matteo nodded.
"The one everyone thought died twenty-eight years ago."
I looked at Luca.
Then back at him.
"How can someone who died be standing outside the door?"
Matteo didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Or because he didn't want to tell me.
I was starting to understand something about powerful people.
They weren't always dangerous because they lied.
Sometimes they were dangerous because they knew the truth.
And chose when to reveal it.
Matteo slowly opened a drawer beneath the security screen.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
Things someone had hidden away.
He pulled out one picture.
A young Matteo stood beside another boy.
They looked almost identical.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
Same serious expression.
Except the other boy had a scar above his eyebrow.
The man outside had the same scar.
I looked at Matteo.
"His name?"
He stared at the photograph.
"Adriano."
The name felt heavy.
"Why did you think he was dead?"
Matteo didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Because I watched him disappear."
I waited.
"That night..."
His voice became quieter.
"My father told me to run."
I looked at him.
"You were a child?"
"Yes."
He looked at the picture.
"Adriano stayed behind."
The room became still.
"He was supposed to meet me later."
A pause.
"He never came."
I looked at the door.
"And now he is here."
Matteo nodded.
"But he's not the same person."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Matteo looked at Luca.
"It means someone found him first."
The words made my stomach tighten.
Before I could ask more, the locked door suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
A small sound.
The lock.
Someone was opening it.
From outside.
Enzo raised his weapon.
Matteo lifted his hand.
"Wait."
The door opened slowly.
A man stepped inside.
The same scar.
The same eyes.
Older.
Colder.
But unmistakably connected to Matteo.
Adriano Bellini.
Nobody spoke.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes stopped on Luca.
Not Matteo.
Not me.
Luca.
My body reacted before my mind did.
I moved in front of my son.
Adriano noticed.
A strange expression crossed his face.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Something worse.
Regret.
"Isabella really hid him from me."
My heart stopped.
My mother's name.
Again.
"What did you say?"
Adriano looked at me.
"You don't know, do you?"
I tightened my grip on Luca.
"Know what?"
Matteo stepped forward.
"Don't."
Adriano ignored him.
"She didn't disappear."
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
My mother.
The woman I had spent my entire life wondering about.
The woman everyone said was gone.
Adriano looked directly at me.
"Your mother ran because she discovered the truth."
"What truth?"
His eyes moved to Matteo.
Then back to Luca.
"The truth that this child was never supposed to survive."
My blood turned cold.
"No."
Adriano stepped closer.
Matteo immediately blocked him.
"One more step."
Adriano stopped.
But he smiled.
Because he knew something Matteo didn't.
"You're still protecting them."
Matteo's face hardened.
"You're still lying."
Adriano reached into his coat.
Every guard reacted.
But he only pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
"For Alessandra."
I didn't move.
"What is it?"
Adriano looked at me.
"Something your mother wanted you to have when you were ready."
My hands trembled.
"My mother wrote this?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Adriano looked at Luca.
"Before she gave him away."
The words hit me.
Gave him away.
I looked at my son.
My beautiful boy.
My whole world.
"What are you saying?"
Nobody answered.
Adriano looked at Matteo.
"Tell her."
Matteo didn't move.
"Tell her who Luca's father really is."
My heart stopped.
I looked at Matteo.
Then at Luca.
Then back.
"No."
It was barely a whisper.
Adriano continued.
"She deserves the truth."
Matteo's expression changed.
Like he was fighting something inside himself.
"Alessandra..."
I shook my head.
"No."
Because I already knew.
Before anyone said it.
I already knew.
The necklace.
The note.
The photograph.
The way Matteo looked at Luca.
The way everyone protected a secret I had never been allowed to touch.
Adriano slowly pushed the envelope toward me.
Inside was a photograph.
And a letter.
The photograph was old.
A newborn baby.
A young woman holding him.
And beside her...
A man.
A man I had never seen before.
But Matteo recognized immediately.
Because his face went completely pale.
Adriano whispered:
"That is the man who started all of this."
Matteo grabbed the photograph.
His hands shook.
For the first time...
The powerful mafia boss looked terrified.
Because on the back of the photograph...
There was a name.
A name that should have been impossible.
May you like
A name that changed everything.
"Gabriel Bellini."
