Chapter 2 - The Necklace That Should Have Been Buried

The man in the doorway held up the photograph and whispered: "Matteo... she's the woman from the Bellini family massacre." When Matteo Bellini saw the old picture hidden inside the man's coat, he found a missing name written behind it. But two words were circled in red ink: "Still Alive." Matteo finally understood the woman sitting beside him was never a stranger.

The room felt smaller.

That was the first thing I noticed.

A few seconds earlier, I had been sitting at a table I never thought I would touch, covered with a blanket someone had given my son.

Now every person around me was frozen.

The stranger standing at the door held a photograph in his hand.

And Matteo Bellini...

The man who had looked impossible to scare.

The man everyone in the restaurant watched with fear.

Looked like he had just seen something that should not exist.

My fingers tightened around Luca.

I didn't understand what was happening.

But I knew one thing.

It was about me.

"Who are you?" Matteo asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came before something dangerous.

The man at the door slowly walked forward.

His name was Enzo.

I didn't know that yet.

I only knew everyone moved aside when he entered.

"I wasn't expecting to find her here," Enzo said.

Matteo looked at the photograph in his hand.

"Answer me."

Enzo stopped.

His eyes moved toward Luca.

Then toward the necklace.

"Her name is Alessandra Ferraro."

My heart stopped.

I hadn't told anyone my last name.

Not tonight.

Not ever.

I stood up immediately.

"How do you know that?"

Nobody answered.

Matteo looked at me.

Not like before.

Before, he had looked at me like a tired woman who needed help.

Now...

He looked at me like I was a locked door he had spent years trying to open.

"Ferraro," he repeated quietly.

I hated the way he said it.

Like the name carried pain.

"What is happening?" I asked.

My voice shook.

"I walked in here because my son was freezing. I didn't ask for this."

Matteo looked away for a moment.

Something in my words affected him.

Then he looked at Luca.

The anger in his face disappeared.

Just for a second.

"How old is he?"

"Three."

"His father's name?"

I froze.

That question was too personal.

"I don't know why that matters."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"It matters."

"Why?"

Silence.

Then Enzo spoke.

"Because twenty-eight years ago, someone wearing that exact necklace was supposed to die."

The blood drained from my face.

I looked down at the necklace.

The same necklace my mother had given me before she disappeared.

The same necklace I had kept because it was the only thing connecting me to my past.

"You know this?" I whispered.

Enzo looked at Matteo.

Not me.

"Tell her."

Matteo didn't move.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

That scared me more than his anger.

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

His eyes returned to mine.

"Nothing."

I almost laughed.

Nothing?

A man like him didn't have random people walking into his restaurant, revealing family secrets, and then wanting nothing.

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"

His expression changed.

"I thought you were dead."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I didn't know why.

Maybe because my whole life had felt like someone else had already decided I didn't exist.

I hugged Luca closer.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Matteo slowly placed the necklace on the table.

"There was a woman named Isabella Ferraro."

The moment he said the name...

My body went cold.

I knew that name.

My mother's name.

"She disappeared when I was a child," I whispered.

Matteo stared at me.

"She wasn't just a woman who disappeared."

He looked at Enzo.

"She was someone who knew too much."

I looked between them.

"What does my mother have to do with you?"

Nobody answered immediately.

And that silence told me everything.

There was a story.

A story everyone knew except me.

Matteo leaned forward.

"Where have you been living?"

The question confused me.

"Why?"

"Answer me."

I didn't like his tone.

Even though he wasn't shouting.

"I moved constantly."

"Why?"

I looked at Luca.

Because the truth sounded ridiculous.

Because I knew how it sounded.

Like a paranoid woman.

"I was hiding."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"From who?"

I swallowed.

"I don't know."

The restaurant became silent again.

"But every time someone found us, they asked about this necklace."

Matteo went completely still.

"How many times?"

I looked down.

"Three."

Enzo cursed quietly.

Matteo stood.

The movement was sudden.

Everyone around him reacted.

The guards immediately moved.

But Matteo wasn't looking at anyone else.

He was looking at Luca.

"Does your son know anything about this?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Does anyone else know where you are?"

Another pause.

I thought about the man who had followed me two nights ago.

The black car outside my apartment.

The footsteps behind me.

My silence answered before I did.

Matteo understood.

"Someone found you."

I didn't reply.

Because I knew he was right.

He walked away from the table.

"Nobody leaves this restaurant."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He turned toward his guards.

"Lock every entrance."

The room immediately moved.

People followed his orders without question.

I stood up.

"No."

Matteo looked at me.

"I can't stay here."

"You can."

"I don't know you."

His expression hardened.

"No."

Then his voice lowered.

"You don't know me."

A pause.

"But someone out there knows exactly who you are."

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him I didn't need his protection.

I wanted to pick up Luca and walk away.

But then Luca moved.

His eyes opened slightly.

"Mommy..."

My heart softened immediately.

"I'm here."

He looked around sleepily.

Then his eyes landed on Matteo.

For some reason...

My son wasn't afraid.

He reached out his small hand.

Toward Matteo.

The entire room noticed.

Including Matteo.

The dangerous man everyone feared looked at my child like he was seeing something impossible.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

Matteo lowered himself.

He didn't touch Luca.

He waited.

Like he was afraid one wrong movement would break something.

Luca touched his injured hand.

The same hand covered in cuts from whatever fight he had been in.

And he whispered:

"You have a boo-boo."

Nobody spoke.

Then something happened I didn't expect.

Matteo smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

"I do."

Luca looked at his hand.

"Who hurt you?"

The question should have been innocent.

But the effect it had on Matteo was different.

His smile disappeared.

Because nobody had asked him that in years.

Before he could answer...

The lights in the restaurant flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

People shouted.

The guards immediately pulled their weapons.

I grabbed Luca.

Someone moved through the darkness.

Fast.

Too fast.

A phone vibrated on the table.

Not mine.

Not Matteo's.

A hidden phone beneath the old wooden table.

Matteo picked it up.

The screen showed one message.

His face changed as he read it.

Then he slowly turned toward me.

May you like

Because the message contained only four words.

"She knows about Luca."
