Chapter 8 - The Man Wearing the Bellini Ring

A woman stepped back from the hidden room and whispered: "Who are you?" When Alessandra Ferraro saw the stranger holding the Bellini family ring, she discovered an old document hidden beneath his coat. But one name was written across the top: "Isabella's Protector." Alessandra realized her mother's warning was about someone closer than she ever imagined.
The room became silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came when everyone was waiting for something terrible to happen.
I stood frozen.
The stranger in front of me looked nothing like Matteo.
He was older.
Maybe in his late fifties.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But the ring on his finger was unmistakable.
The Bellini ring.
The same symbol Matteo wore.
The same symbol my mother had warned me about.
Do not trust the man who wears the Bellini ring.
My eyes moved toward Matteo.
For the first time since I met him...
I wondered if I had been wrong.
Maybe the person protecting me was the person I should fear.
Matteo noticed my expression.
And it hurt him.
I could see it.
"Alessandra."
I stepped back.
"Don't."
His face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
"I can explain."
The stranger behind me laughed softly.
"Of course you can."
Everyone turned toward him.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Matteo Bellini has always been good at explaining things after they happen."
Matteo immediately moved between us.
"Who are you?"
The stranger looked at him.
"Interesting question."
A pause.
"After all these years, you still don't recognize me."
Matteo's expression changed.
Slowly.
Like a memory was returning.
"No."
The stranger smiled sadly.
"Yes."
My heart raced.
"What is happening?"
Nobody answered.
I hated that.
I hated being the only person in the room who didn't know the rules of the game.
The stranger looked at me.
"My name is Carlo."
He looked at Matteo.
"I was your father's lawyer."
Matteo stared.
"Carlo Moretti."
The man's smile disappeared.
"Good."
A heavy silence followed.
"I was wondering if you had forgotten everyone who tried to save your family."
Save.
That word caught my attention.
Not destroy.
Not betray.
Save.
"What do you mean?"
Carlo looked at me.
"Your mother trusted me."
Matteo's eyes narrowed.
"Why are you here?"
Carlo reached inside his coat.
Every guard reacted.
But he slowly removed a folder.
An old folder.
Worn edges.
Yellow pages.
He placed it on the table.
"Because Isabella knew this day would come."
My breath caught.
Another message.
Another secret.
Another thing my mother had planned before disappearing.
I looked at the folder.
"What is it?"
Carlo looked at Matteo.
"Something your brother never wanted you to find."
The room changed.
Matteo became still.
"Gabriel."
Carlo nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Matteo.
His jaw tightened.
"What does Gabriel have to do with this?"
Carlo opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old photographs.
Records.
Names.
And one picture.
A young Gabriel Bellini standing beside a woman.
My mother.
But this time...
There was someone else.
A baby.
I stepped closer.
"No."
My voice came out weak.
Carlo looked at me.
"Your mother wasn't hiding Luca from the world."
I looked at him.
"Then who was she hiding him from?"
Carlo's eyes moved toward Matteo.
The answer made my stomach twist.
Matteo immediately shook his head.
"No."
Carlo didn't look away.
"She was hiding him from the Bellini family."
My body went cold.
I looked at Matteo.
The man who had protected me.
The man who had given Luca his jacket.
The man whose eyes softened every time he looked at my son.
"No."
I whispered.
Matteo stepped toward me.
"Alessandra, listen to me."
I stepped back.
"Is it true?"
His silence lasted too long.
That was enough.
"Matteo."
His voice became low.
"I didn't know."
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But my entire life had been built on people keeping things from me.
"I don't know what to believe anymore."
Luca started moving beside me.
The tension was affecting him.
I immediately picked him up.
Carlo watched quietly.
Then he said something that made everyone stop.
"Luca isn't Gabriel's son."
My eyes lifted.
"What?"
Carlo looked at Matteo.
"He isn't yours either."
The room froze.
My heart stopped.
Then what was the truth?
Carlo walked toward the table.
"He is Isabella's final protection."
He opened another document.
"This child was created to carry information."
I stared at him.
"No."
The word came out instantly.
Because I refused.
My son was not a secret.
Not a weapon.
Not a message.
"He is a child."
Carlo looked at me.
"And that is exactly why Isabella trusted you."
My anger softened slightly.
"Why me?"
Carlo looked at Luca.
"Because you were the only person who loved him without knowing what he was."
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because it was true.
I didn't love Luca because of a name.
Or a family.
Or a secret.
I loved him because he was my son.
The only person who had stayed with me when everyone else disappeared.
Matteo looked at Carlo.
"What information?"
Carlo hesitated.
Then pulled out a small envelope.
"This."
He handed it to Matteo.
Matteo opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then his face changed.
"What?"
I asked.
He didn't answer.
Carlo looked at me.
"The truth about what happened twenty-eight years ago."
Matteo folded the paper.
Slowly.
"Gabriel didn't kill my father."
Everyone looked at him.
"He didn't betray the family."
A pause.
"Someone else did."
Carlo nodded.
"Yes."
I felt a chill.
"Who?"
Matteo looked at the Bellini ring on his own hand.
Then removed it.
For the first time.
He placed it on the table.
"The person who betrayed my family..."
His voice became quieter.
"...was wearing this ring."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The warning.
The letter.
The ring.
Everything pointed to one person.
But then Luca suddenly looked toward the hallway.
His small face changed.
"Mommy."
I turned.
"What?"
He pointed at the dark corridor outside the hidden room.
"The man who gave me the box..."
My blood ran cold.
"Who?"
Luca whispered:
"He was wearing that ring too."
I looked at the table.
At Matteo's ring.
Then at the empty hallway.
Because someone had been inside my apartment before us.
Someone who knew about the hidden room.
Someone who knew about my mother's letter.
And someone who had the same ring.
Then the old apartment lights turned on by themselves.
One room at a time.
May you like
And from the end of the hallway...
a man's voice called my name.
