Chapter 1 - The Bride Nobody Wanted

A woman in a white dress fell to the marble floor and whispered: "Please don't laugh at me."
When Mafia heir Luca Moretti arrived, he found a blue financial ledger beside the lobby table that everyone was afraid to touch.
On the back page, three numbers were written: "$48,000. Approved. Hidden."
Luca suddenly realized this wasn't a marriage arrangement.
It was an investigation.
Elena Russo had imagined many ways her first meeting with Luca Moretti might happen.
None of them involved falling in front of half of New York's wealthiest families.
The Moretti Grand lobby was designed to make people feel small.
Everything about it was overwhelming.
The crystal chandeliers.
The black marble floors.
The towering windows overlooking the city.
The silent employees who moved like shadows.
And then there was Luca Moretti.
Six feet seven inches tall.
A man whose presence changed the entire room before he even spoke.
Elena had heard stories about him long before she saw him.
Some said women refused him because they feared the Moretti name.
Some said they feared his cold personality.
Others said they simply could not imagine standing beside a man who looked like he belonged on the cover of a dangerous business magazine.
Six women had rejected marriage arrangements involving Luca.
Elena had laughed when her brother Anthony first told her.
She thought it was exaggerated.
Until she walked into the Moretti Grand and saw everyone looking at Luca like he was a storm waiting to happen.
Her family had told her this was just a formal dinner.
A business discussion.
A chance to meet one of the most influential hotel families in the city.
They forgot to mention one detail.
She was supposed to be the seventh woman offered to Luca Moretti.
Elena slowly stood after falling.
Her ivory dress was slightly wrinkled.
A few guests looked away.
A few smiled.
Nobody offered help.
Except Luca.
He extended his hand.
"Are you finished embarrassing yourself?"
The question was quiet.
But it cut deeper than shouting.
Elena looked at his hand.
Then at his face.
Then she stood without accepting it.
"I managed."
Something changed in Luca's expression.
Not anger.
Surprise.
Most people reacted differently around him.
They apologized too quickly.
They avoided eye contact.
They tried to impress him.
Elena simply looked annoyed.
Anthony rushed forward.
"Elena, please. This isn't how tonight was supposed to begin."
She adjusted her dress.
"Really? Because nobody mentioned the part where I become entertainment for a room full of strangers."
Dominic Moretti, Luca's uncle, stepped forward.
An older man with expensive taste and a smile that never reached his eyes.
"Miss Russo, emotions are understandable."
Elena looked at him.
"My emotions are not the problem."
She glanced around the room.
"The problem is that everyone here knew something I didn't."
Silence.
That was when Luca noticed something.
She wasn't looking at him.
She wasn't impressed by his money.
She wasn't intimidated by his reputation.
She was studying the room.
Like she was trying to understand a problem.
Dominic cleared his throat.
"Perhaps we should move to dinner."
Elena almost laughed.
"Before or after you explain why my family dressed me like a bride?"
Anthony looked uncomfortable.
"Elena..."
She turned toward him.
"Was I invited here because of hotel consulting?"
Nobody answered.
That was enough.
Her expression became calm.
Too calm.
"I see."
Luca watched her carefully.
He expected anger.
Maybe tears.
Maybe someone leaving dramatically.
Instead, Elena simply walked toward the nearest table.
And that was when she saw it.
A blue leather ledger.
Sitting beside Luca's documents.
At first, it looked ordinary.
But Elena had spent years managing luxury hotel operations.
She knew numbers.
She knew invoices.
She knew when something looked wrong.
She opened the cover.
Luca immediately stepped forward.
"Don't."
She looked up.
"Why?"
"Because it isn't your business."
Elena looked back at the pages.
"Then why is your name on every payment?"
The room became silent.
Dominic's expression changed slightly.
Only for a second.
But Elena noticed.
She turned another page.
Emergency ballroom reset.
Labor costs.
Cleaning charges.
Vendor replacement.
Total:
$48,000.
She frowned.
"When did this event happen?"
Dominic answered.
"That information is irrelevant."
"No."
Elena looked at him.
"It isn't."
She pointed at the page.
"The ballroom was still occupied during this time."
Nobody spoke.
Luca moved closer.
"You are certain?"
Elena looked at him.
"Very."
She turned another page.
Another charge.
Same ballroom.
Different date.
Same impossible timing.
Her voice became quieter.
"Someone charged you for work that could not have happened."
Anthony stepped beside her.
"Elena, stop."
But she didn't.
Because now she understood.
This wasn't a mistake.
Mistakes happened once.
This happened repeatedly.
Luca took the ledger from her.
His eyes moved across the pages.
For the first time that evening, the powerful mafia heir looked uncertain.
Not because of the money.
Because someone inside his organization had been hiding something from him.
Dominic forced a smile.
"Clerical errors happen."
Elena looked at him.
"Three times?"
The smile disappeared.
Luca closed the ledger.
"Everyone leave."
The guests immediately obeyed.
Within seconds, the grand lobby became almost empty.
Only Elena, Luca, Dominic, and Anthony remained.
Luca looked at Elena.
"You came here expecting a dinner."
"Yes."
"You found a financial problem instead."
"Yes."
"You aren't afraid?"
Elena looked at the blue ledger.
"I should be?"
For a moment, Luca said nothing.
Then he noticed something Elena had not.
A small mark inside the ledger.
A handwritten note hidden beneath the final page.
A name.
His eyes narrowed.
Because the handwriting belonged to someone who was supposed to have disappeared years ago.
May you like
Luca slowly lifted the hidden page.
And whispered the name he never expected to see again...
